Open For Business: Gov't to Erect $98,670 Outhouse

The Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently paid $98,670 for the purchase and installation of an outhouse at the Swede Park Trail Head in Alaska.

The purchase includes a single-vault Romtec 1011 "Aspen Single" prefabricated waterless toilet and its installation at the parking area for the trail head.

KJ Mushovic of the BLM tells CNSNews.com, “Almost half of it (contract expense) is for the cost of the toilet.”

The Oregon based company Romtec lists the "Aspen Single" model on its website for “as low as $9,999”, but the BLM says the price they paid likely includes shipping to Alaska.

“And the cost of all the materials that will have to be taken to the site, Mushovic said. “There will be earthwork that’ll have to be done.”

Marriage Group To Sue IRS Over Donor Leak, Says List Went To Political Enemies

The National Organization for Marriage will sue the IRS on Thursday, saying it has evidence that someone within the agency leaked the organization’s private donor list to its political enemies in 2012 but that nobody has been held responsible.

Release of confidential taxpayer information is a felony, but the organization’s leaders say the Internal Revenue Service and its internal auditor, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration, have stonewalled their efforts to learn who was responsible.

REID ON SAVING ONE CHILD THROUGH FUNDING COMPROMISE: 'WHY WOULD WE WANT TO DO THAT?'

During a Wednesday afternoon press briefing, CNN's Dana Bash asked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid about agreeing to fund the National Institutes of Health, as the GOP is proposing to do with no strings attached. Bash mentioned the fact that due to the shutdown, children with cancer are being turned away from clinical trials at the NIH and that the GOP will pass a bill today funding the NIH.

Reid and Democrats, however, are insisting they will vote against or table the limited CR. President Obama has already threatened a veto.

After Reid danced around the question, Bash drilled down and Reid's response was quite revealing and a little chilling:

Why Lawyers In America Drink So Much

Editor's note: The following is an answer to the question posted on Quora, "Why do lawyers drink so much?" We have reprinted the answer with permission from the author.
A threshold question: Do they? Yes. This is clear anecdotally among lawyers and law students I know, and it's also borne out empirically.

Well, why? The short version: Practicing law sucks enough to drive anyone to drink. Plus, even if you are a (rare) happy lawyer, three years of booze-soaked law school have probably turned you into a lush.

Obama - "I Need A Lever"

As a long time watcher of Social Security I was shocked (yes, shocked) at the recent Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report on America's largest entitlement program. CBO concluded that the long term outlook for SS deteriorated substantially over the last twelve month. (CBO link)

CBO revised its assumptions regarding mortality. This is a huge variables for SS. With people living longer, they will receive more checks; this eats into the solvency of SS over a long-term period.

CBO concluded that one option to 'balance' the solvency of SS required an "Immediately and Permanent" payroll tax increase of 3.4% (Wow!). A year earlier, CBO stated that a payroll tax increase of 1.9% was required to balance SS. The change in the tax increase required is 70% higher than that reported just a year ago!

SS's taxable payroll is equal to 36.3% of GDP. That comes to $5.8 Trillion for 2013. A 3.4% tax increase translates to approximately $200 Bn! A tax increase of this magnitude would absolutely sink the economy. There is no chance in hell that anything like that could (or should) happen. However, there are a variety of other alternatives to tweak SS that would not have the negative consequences of such a big tax increase.

Why You'll Soon Be Paying Rent To The Chinese

Today, I want to talk about something easy and basic, something that every American should understand.

When you borrow money, you eventually have to pay it back – plus interest.

That’s all you need to know to understand the financial crisis and the terrible consequences we face if we don’t stop borrowing money from foreign creditors.

Before the financial crisis of 2008/2009, America was caught up in a huge debt-financed spending boom. Our trade deficits were soaring out of control simply because we continued to consume more than we produced. The debt to finance this consumption piled up in the form of mortgages and the federal deficit. It enabled the housing boom, which in turn created the structured-finance debacle that wrecked AIG and wiped out Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers.

Some In GOP Not Heeding Old Big Business Allies

Having failed to persuade their traditional Republican allies in Congress to avert a government shutdown, business leaders fear bigger problems ahead, and they're taking sides with a Democratic president whose health care and regulatory agenda they have vigorously opposed.

President Barack Obama is embracing the business outreach, eager to employ groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Wall Street CEOs to portray House Republicans as out of touch even with their long-established corporate and financial patrons.

Yet, the partial closing of the government and the looming confrontation over the nation's borrowing limit highlight the remarkable drop in the business community's influence among House Republicans, who increasingly respond more to tea party conservatives than to the Chamber of Commerce.

On Wednesday, Obama is hosting chief executives from the nation's 19 biggest financial firms. Moreover, the Chamber of Commerce has sent a letter to Congress signed by about 250 business groups urging no shutdown and warning against a debt ceiling crisis that they say could lead to an economically disastrous default.

Prime Hook, Bombay Hook refuges closed

The federal government shutdown has hit close to home: National Guard members and civilians at Dover Air Force Base have been furloughed and two national wildlife refuges are closed.

Gates are up preventing access to the main entrances of The Coastal Delaware National Wildlife Refuge Complex – Prime Hook and Bombay Hook. While a lapse in funding remains in effect, public access to National Fish and Wildlife Service areas will be prohibited and fish and wildlife management activities and programs will be canceled, said spokesman Al Rizzo. This includes the youth wildfowl hunt scheduled at the refuges on Saturday, Oct. 5.

At Prime Hook, the visitor's center at the end of Turkle Pond Road and several trails are closed, but views of the refuge are still available along Prime Hook and Broadkill roads.

Tea Party Has Unmoored GOP From Big Business

The Associated Press says the Tea Party's growing power and influence has unmoored Republican politicians from their traditional alliance with Wall Street in favor of grassroots conservative activists.

AP reporters Charles Babington and Jim Kuhnhenn cited the "corporate community's waning clout" and "the remarkable drop in the business community's influence among House Republicans, who increasingly respond more to Tea Party conservatives than to the Chamber of Commerce."

The shift comes as grassroots activists have re-framed the GOP's old "pro-business" stance into a "pro-free markets" positioning that eschews the kinds of corporate welfare and taxpayer-funded crony capitalism found in big government giveaways to industries that make hefty political contributions.

The Dissolution Of The Black Family

The 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, and of the Reverend Martin Luther King’s memorable “I have a dream” speech, is a time for reflections — some inspiring, and some painful and ominous.

At the core of Dr. King’s speech was his dream of a world in which people would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by “the content of their character.”

Judging individuals by their individual character is at the opposite pole from judging how groups are statistically represented among employees, college students or political figures.

Yet many — if not most — of those who celebrate the “I have a dream” speech today promote the directly opposite approach of group preferences, especially those based on skin color.

How consistent Martin Luther King himself was as he confronted the various issues of his time is a question that can be left for historians. His legacy to us is the “I have a dream” speech.

Shutdown Forces Lockheed Martin to Furlough 3,000 Employees

Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin announced Friday that as of Monday, they will furlough 3,000 workers because of the government shutdown.

The company said it includes workers who are unable to work because the government facility where they perform their work is closed, or their work requires a government inspection that cannot be completed, or we've received a stop work order.

‘YOU’RE LYING!’: A FIRED-UP SEAN HANNITY OFFERS DEM CONGRESSMAN A $10K OBAMACARE BET FOR CHARITY – HERE’S HIS RESPONSE

Sean Hannity got into a heated exchange with Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) over the Obamacare “subsidy exemption” available to members of Congress. The debate hit its peak when Hannity offered the congressman a $10,000 bet to benefit charity if he could prove that members of Congress will not receive a “special subsidy” that the American people don’t have access to.

“If big business gets a special exemption, do you think it’s fair that individuals did not get the same exemption? And similarly, you and Congress are getting the subsidy exemption that the rest of us are not getting with Obamacare. Is that fair?” Hannity began.

Cops Shoot Texas Homeowner Dead After He Kills Intruder

A Texas homeowner was shot dead by police after he shot and killed a career criminal who broke into his home Thursday night, authorities say.

The Dallas Morning News reports police did not realize 57-year-old William Keith Hall was defending his home when they arrived, and that Hall ignored the officers’ repeated demands he drop his weapon.

Maj. Jeff Cotner tells the paper Hall pointed a pistol at police officers and witnesses on the scene, and that he had plenty of time to “de-escalate the situation.”

“He was given plenty of notice, and he didn’t choose a path other than to confront officers,” Cotner said.

Federal Officials Approve Route 50 Bridge Alternative, But Project Likely Decades Away

OCEAN CITY — While construction could be nearly two decades away, federal transportation officials last week formally approved one of several alternatives for a new Route 50 Bridge into Ocean City, setting in motion a likely lengthy timetable for the replacement of the existing span.

After reviewing numerous impact studies for the multiple alternatives proposed, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) last week formally approved Alternative 5A for the future replacement of the aging Harry Kelley Memorial Bridge.

The FHWA formally entered its approval of Alternative 5A in the Federal Register. That step is the first of many in the long process, which includes final design, right-of-way acquisition of properties in the area and finally construction, which is targeted for the mid- to late 2020s if not later.

Freer, who owned two condominiums on 26th Street in Ocean City and appears to have lease agreements for three others, was charged with 90 counts each of theft by deception and failure to make required disposition of funds, plus 50 counts of forgery and related crimes. He was taken to the county prison in lieu of $10 million bail.

Though he didn’t have any bar or restaurant experience, Riccio said that the property really called to him and he decided to take a chance.

LITTLE JOHNNY DOES IT AGAIN

The kids filed into class all excited one morning. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, and then give a talk on salesmanship.
Little Sally led off. "I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30" she said proudly, my sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success."

"Very good", said the teacher.

Little Debbie was next. "I sold magazines" she said, "I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events."

"Very good, Debbie", said the teacher.

Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath.

Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "$2,467", he said.

"$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?"

"Toothbrushes", said Little Johnny.

"Toothbrushes", echoed the teacher,"How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?"

"I found the busiest corner in town", said Little Johnny, "I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample."

They all said the same thing, "Hey, this tastes like dog poop!" Then I would say, "It is dog poop. Wanna buy a toothbrush?

I used the President Obama method of giving you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it's free and then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth."

Little Johnny got five stars for his assignment.
Bless his heart.

Barrycades: Feds Try To Shut Down Privately Owned Mount Vernon

“Deliberate effort by Obama to hurt the public”
The National Park Service erected barricades to shut down parking lots surrounding Mount Vernon despite the fact that the tourist destination is privately owned, another example of how the feds are deliberately worsening the government shut down.

Mount Vernon is the former plantation of George Washington and is owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, which doesn’t receive any government funding. The attraction’s official website reads, “NO SHUTDOWN HERE – The Federal government may be shut down, but Washington’s home remains open. Mount Vernon has remained a private non-profit for more than 150 years.”

However, a dispute began when the National Park Service began putting up barricades to block off the facility’s car park, blockading the entrance as well as a spot where tour buses turn around.

The parking lots are co-owned by Mount Vernon and the NPS, but require no immediate maintenance at all, meaning the decision to close them down was completely unnecessary.

Obamacare Fines To Be Seized From Bank Accounts?

Man who attempted to sign up claims he was threatened with drivers license being revoked, federal tax lien on home

A man who attempted to sign up for Obamacare online was told that a fine of over $4,000 dollars a year for refusing to take out mandatory health insurance could be taken directly from his bank account, and that his drivers license would be suspended and a federal tax lien placed against his home, according to an entry on the HealthCare.gov Facebook page.

If true, the implementation of Obamacare is going to be a whole lot more draconian than Americans have been led to believe.

Will Sheehan claims that when he tried to sign up for Obamacare and then register to opt out, he received an ominous warning. Sheehan’s full Facebook post reads;
“I actually made it through this morning at 8:00 A.M. I have a preexisting condition (Type 1 Diabetes) and my income base was 45K-55K annually I chose tier 2 “Silver Plan” and my monthly premiums came out to $597.00 with $13,988 yearly deductible!!! There is NO POSSIBLE way that I can afford this so I “opt-out” and chose to continue along with no insurance.

Foods That Cause Plaque Buildup In The Arteries

You’ve probably heard that what you eat can greatly affect your cardiovascular health. But knowing which foods to choose — and which to skip — to achieve your health goals, can be confusing. Rest assured, heart-healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated. Find out how to avoid the foods that can lead to plaque buildup and fill your plate with healthy alternatives instead.

Certain foods can cause the body to make too much of a waxy substance called cholesterol. Cholesterol can combine with fat, calcium, and other substances in the blood to form plaque. Plaque then slowly builds up and hardens in the arteries, causing them to narrow. This buildup of plaque, a condition called atherosclerosis, can lead to heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

The good news? When we focus our diets on healthy foods, we can stop and potentially even reverse this narrowing of the arteries. Experts know that food that contributes to high levels of blood cholesterol contains too much saturated fat, trans fat, and dietary cholesterol. The information below can help you identify problem foods and get your arteries into healthier shape.

Ben Carson Audited After Prayer Braekfast Speech

Dr. Ben Carson reportedly had his “first encounter with the IRS” after his viral speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in February, the accomplished neurosurgeon revealed at a Monday night event with business leaders and elected officials in Alabama.

While Carson stopped short of accusing the IRS of targeting him because he openly criticized policies implemented by President Barack Obama or due to his outspoken conservative views, he did note that the tax agency’s visit wasn’t very surprising.

“I had my first encounter with the IRS this year, unsurprisingly after the Prayer Breakfast,” he said at the annual Business Council of Alabama Chairman’s Dinner.

Government Shutdown Impasse Continues After White House Meet As Upcoming Debt Battle Looms Large

The shutdown ended Day Two even after President Obama met with congressional leaders to resolve political posturing over Obamacare. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid suggested the possibility of default if the debt limit bill becomes interwined with government funding.
WASHINGTON — They came together, but they’re still miles apart.

President Obama and leaders of Congress met face-to-face Wednesday for the first time since the government shutdown began — but they made no progress toward ending the deadlock that has forced 800,000 federal workers off the job and disrupted services from coast to coast.

The Republicans insisted that changes to Obamacare be part of any deal to fund the government. The President and the Democrats refused.

“We had a nice, polite conversation,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said after the White House sitdown. But he said that Democrats “will not negotiate” and that “we’ve got divided government.”

Obama administration won't say how many Americans signed up on the central website that covered insurance exchanges for 36 states

Other states wouldn't provide statistics, or tracked only the creation of new online accounts, not numbers of completed applications

Obamacare: A Lousy Deal For Families

Ready or not, Obamacare is finally here. Polls show that most Americans remain highly skeptical of the law’s benefits. According to a new CNN/ORC International survey released October 1, less than one in five Americans say their families will be better off under the new health care law.

Nevertheless, the controversial law’s passionate defenders insist it represents an historic event.

It extends health care coverage to between 10 and 35 million Americans, depending upon how many will actually choose to sign up, and represents the single biggest change in health care financing since the advent of Medicare in the mid-1960s.

More controversial is the claim that Obamacare will reduce costs for most Americans.

Ron Paul: "The Country Is Bankrupt... The People Are Being Bamboozled"

"The American people are being bamboozled into believing that you have to keep spending for ever," Ron Paul exclaims, as "neither side is truly looking for spending cuts." As he explains they all know that increasing spending is all that can maintain the status quo. In this brief CNBC clip, Paul says playing the blame game is ignorant of the reality that both sides are "rigid with bad ideas," dismissing Obama's 'faction' comments. For a glimpse at the chaos underlying the status quo (that is being exposed this week), Paul blasts that "it is a philosophy of government that is to blame; Keynesianism, Militarism, and Interventionism, and the funny-money system that we use. All that has come together and the country is bankrupt and nobody wants to amid it."
"Why in the world can't the people have an option to opt-out?" is the middle ground possibility that Paul suggests...

"While more are waking up to it (especially in light of the non-essential services furloughs currently), there is still an appetite for big government - people are afraid to give up on it."

The Democrats are just as "rigid" as the Republicans.. "They are rigid with bad ideas too in that "deficits don't matter, the government has to spend, and the government has to take care of us, and you should print money when you need it."

Paul goes on to discuss Gold "all central banks work together - they collude"

... Moral convictions, "right or wrong", and "the only thing that really counts is what the American people believe the role of government should be... and if deficits don't matter, it will not be a shutdown of government but a breakdown of government that occurs"

Rand Paul: '85 Percent Of Government Is Being Funded'

For lack of funding, the federal government has shut down "non-essential" services, but in fact, much of the government is still being funded, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said.

"But one of the under-reported stories here is 85 percent of government is being funded," Paul told Fox News's Sean Hannity on Tuesday. "Two thirds of the government is Social Security, Medicare -- all of that is going on. And then we agreed yesterday, Harry Reid did come forward when we asked him to, and he finally agreed to pay the soldiers. So now we're up to that, 85 percent of the government."

Media Coverage Of Government Shutdown

Last week, as the prospect of a federal government shutdown loomed as reality, the President of the United States told the media that he would "not negotiate" with "house burners." And with that, the American mainstream media threw away their longstanding belief in "civil bipartisan compromise" in order to stand with Obama.

Since then, the GOP have passed two bills to avert a shutdown, both Senate Democrats and Obama have refused to offer a compromise, and now the media are attempting to make the GOP look like the crazies and the Democrats and Obama look like statesman.

Democrats, who have long posed as the party of peaceniks and doves, have been anything but during the great rhetorical war of 2013. In fact, the party of George McGovern and Jimmy Carter has been mad as hell as of late, leading an offensive of bombastic insults and rhetorical bullying that has dominated the government shutdown. It’s a perfect storm, with Democrats leading the pace.

President Obama called Republicans “reckless and irresponsible,” casting the Grand Old Party in the role of villain. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, referred to Republicans as “anarchists,” and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, deemed Republicans “legislative arsonists.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Overloaded websites and jammed phone lines frustrated consumers for a second day as they tried to sign up for health insurance under the nation’s historic health care overhaul.

Glenn Beck Irate Over Leaked Boehner Office Emails: ‘Defund The GOP’

Glenn Beck was incensed Wednesday over reports of leaked emails that indicated House Speaker John Boehner coordinated with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to exempt Congress from Obamacare.

“This is John Boehner. This is your speaker of the House … this is exactly what we’ve been saying they are doing,” Beck said with disgust on radio. “They are making special deals behind closed doors. They are one part and parcel with the Democratic Party. They are in bed with them and they are lying to you.”

Beck urged his audience to call the Republican Party and say they won’t contribute “another cent” to the party at large.
