GM Dealership Gets Hosed By Maryland Rain Tax

Harford County Executive and Maryland candidate for Governor David R. Craig released today an economic impact analysis of the so-called rain tax which soaks a typical business that depends on parking lots, roofs and other impervious surfaces with thousands of dollars in fees. Illustrating the haphazard approach under the new Maryland law, a family-owned General Motors dealership used as a case study in the analysis would be required to pay anywhere from one penny in an outer suburban county to $12,000 per year in Baltimore City.

“If you wanted to open a business with a parking lot, would you want to come to Maryland and figure out this new tax?" asked Craig. “It is easier in our small state for many businesses to simply locate in Delaware, Pennsylvania or Virginia.”

The law, formally known as the “Stormwater Management - Watershed Protection and Restoration Program,” stems from the Obama Administration’s EPA mandate to reduce run off into the Chesapeake Bay. The O’Malley-Brown Administration signed the measure into law in 2012 with an estimated fiscal impact projected to be a staggering $14.8 billion. It is the costliest documented stormwater fee regime in the nation that the campaign could determine. The first stormwater fees were implemented in some jurisdictions across the country beginning in the mid 1970’s to help meet federal Clean Water Act requirements.

Baltimore City alone estimates it will collect $24 million from the rain tax per year. Baltimore, which already has the state’s highest property and individual income taxes, leads the state in taxpayer exodus according to the latest Internal Revenue Service data.

“Baltimore City is sealing its own fate like Detroit – a downward spiral caused by raising taxes and fees on a shrinking base,” said Craig. “Baltimore especially can ill-afford to saddle residents and businesses with the highest rain tax in the state; it will only circle the financial drain that much faster.”

Craig will hold a press conference on the rain tax on Tuesday, September 17 at Boyle Buick and GMC Truck in Abingdon. The announcement coincides with a scheduled visit to Maryland from Texas Gov. Rick Perry who is waging a media attack on the state’s business climate under the O’Malley-Brown Administration and a nascent grassroots secessionist movement in western Maryland that is likewise gaining media attention.

The O’Malley-Brown Administration has increased taxes, fees and tolls 40 times that remove an additional $3.1 billion out of the economy per year.

“There is a pattern here,” said Craig. “There is a growing class of ‘forgotten Marylanders’ – people who are left behind from all walks of life and from every part of our state who are required to pay record amounts of taxes, fees and tolls to support radical political rulers who no longer represent them.”

Ron Paul: Tide Turns Against Warmongers

Will the history books record these past couple of weeks as the point when the tide finally turned against our interventionist foreign policy?

We began September with the Obama Administration on the verge of launching Tomahawk missiles at Syria. The missiles were needed, the administration claimed, to punish the Syrian government for using poison gas on its own people. There were reports that in addition to missiles, the administration was planning airstrikes and possibly even more military action against Syria. The talks of a punishing “shot across the bow” to send a message to the Syrian government also escalated, as some discussed the need to degrade the Syrian military to help change the regime. They refused to rule out a US ground invasion of Syria.

NJ Boardwalk Fire Linked To Sandy-Damaged Wiring

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) -- The massive fire that destroyed part of a Jersey shore boardwalk and scores of businesses began accidentally by wiring damaged in Superstorm Sandy, and should prompt coastal property owners to inspect their own wiring for similar danger, authorities said Tuesday.

The boardwalk fire in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights began accidentally Thursday in aged wiring that had been compromised by saltwater and sand during the Oct. 29 storm, federal and county investigators said at a news conference. The wind-whipped blaze destroyed more than 50 businesses in the two towns.

Yahoo CEO Fears Defying NSA Could Mean Prison

Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer said she feared winding up in prison for treason if she refused to comply with U.S. spy demands for data.

Her comments came after being asked what she is doing to protect Yahoo users from "tyrannical government" during an on-stage interview Wednesday afternoon at a TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco.

Mayer said Yahoo scrutinizes and fights U.S. government data requests stamped with the authority of a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, but when the company loses battles it must do as directed or risk being branded a traitor.

Data requests authorized by the court come with an order barring anyone at the company receiving the request from disclosing anything about them, even their existence.

"If you don't comply, it is treason," Mayer said when asked why she couldn't just spill details of requests by U.S. spy agencies for information about Yahoo users.

Safe Kids Lower Shore Maryland Coalition Offers Car Seat Inspections On Seat Check Saturday

Certified technicians help parents correctly use and install car and booster seats on final day of Child Passenger Safety Week.

Salisbury, MD
– Safe Kids Lower Shore Maryland Coalition urges parents and caregivers to make sure their car seats and booster seats are properly installed on “National Seat Check Saturday,” September 21. Salisbury will have certified child passenger safety technicians available to provide hands-on instruction on installing car and booster seats at Sam’s Club, 2700 N. Salisbury Blvd. from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“Correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent,” said Tammy Griffin, Safe Kids Lower Shore MD. “We want all parents to make sure their car seats are used and installed correctly and that the whole family is buckled up every time, on every ride. And we’re here to help.”

In a nationwide effort to educate parents and caregivers during Child Passenger Safety Week, Safe Kids and the General Motors Foundation are teaming up for Seat Check Saturday activities as part the Buckle Up program, a national initiative established 16 years ago by Safe Kids and the GM Foundation to keep children and families safe in and around cars.

Safe Kids will host more than 500 child seat inspections across the country for CPS week, including one on Tuesday, September 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Worcester County Health Department, 9730 Healthway Dr. Berlin, MD. Call the Berlin Police Department for details (410-641-1333).

Car seat inspections offer drivers the chance to receive assistance and guidance from certified car seat technicians regarding proper installation of their child safety and booster seats. Safe Kids Buckle Up events continue throughout the year.

Parents can also check their own car and booster seats by using this car seat check list. Certified child passenger safety technicians are available to help you or double check your work. Parents and caregivers can locate an event in their community by visiting the Safe Kids website at safekids.org.

THE ACT OF KINDNESS CAUGHT ON CAMERA DURING YESTERDAY’S CHAOS

In times of mass chaos, like Monday during the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard shooting, the first instinct of many would be to take cover or run. Others see a need to help others and do.

That’s what Omar Grant, a civilian employee at the naval installment, did according to Chris Moody for Yahoo News. When the sound of gunshots began to pepper the air, Grant took the arm of his colleague who is visually impaired and led him to safety.

McAuliffe Bombs With Virginia Tech Gurus

The central premise of Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s campaign for Virginia governor is that he “gets” business and can spur job creation. But it’s becoming blindingly obvious that’s all fluff and no substance.

Last week, prominent McAuliffe backers tried to strong-arm the Northern Virginia Technology Council’s political arm, Tech PAC, into reversing its endorsement of GOP nominee Ken Cuccinelli, the state’s former attorney general. State Senator Janet Howell of Fairfax wrote Tech PAC leaders last Friday that “The ramifications of [Cuccinelli] being endorsed will be huge within the Senate Democratic caucus. . . . The response [from legislators] will be frigid and doors will be closed [when the council seeks help with its legislative agenda]. Achieving the goals of NVTC will be difficult to impossible.” Other calls to Tech PAC were made by Democratic U.S. senator Tim Kaine and Bill Bolling, the Republican lieutenant governor who has declined to endorse his party’s nominee for governor.

Vanishing Ocean City With Bunk Mann

Postcard image courtesy Bill and Kitt Matthews
The Dispatch
This postcard view from the 1960s looks west from 33rd Street and the oceanfront toward the bay and mainland. The building in the foreground was the Stardust Motel, which anchored the northern end of “Motel Row.” The Harrison Group’s Hilton Hotel occupies that block today.

The smaller hotels in the middle of the picture were the White Sands (later renamed the Charm Motel and now a parking lot for the Hilton) and the Yankee Clipper, which later renamed the Ocean Voyager. The Yankee Clipper/Ocean Voyager contained the locals bar The Pirates Den and was demolished this month. La Quinta Inn is planned for that site.

The area west of Philadelphia Avenue shows the Arnold Palmer Driving Range, the Seafarer Motel and the Beachcomber Lounge. All of that including the vacant land along the bay is now the location of the popular Jolly Roger Amusement Park.

Practical Libertarianism: Peace Keepers vs. Police

Republicans, Democrats – authoritarian collectivists generally – reflexively dismiss Libertarianism as “impractical” and “naive” in order to avoid discussing the validity of core Libertarian ideals – self ownership, non-aggression. They wave their hands and say, “it won’t work.”

But is this true?

One of the most tiresome objections to a free society – that is, to a society based on the Libertarian ideals of self-ownership and non-aggression – is that absent police, there would be no way to prevent people from running amok and abusing others; that a Lord of the Flies scenario would ensue, with the strong dominating the weak. There would be chaos, insecurity and vigilantism, they cry.

Nonsense.

First, it is necessary (as Ayn Rand famously put it) to check one’s premises. It is true that a Libertarian society – a free society – would not have any need for police. Police enforce laws. As most thoughtful people know, laws are not always just. Indeed, laws are more often not just. This hardly requires elaboration.

Drug Used Against Sarin Gas Exposure Has Manufacturing Issues

Congressman Andy Harris Raises Questions About Shortage of Sarin Gas Drug

WASHINGTON, D.C.
– The main drug used to counteract sarin gas like what was used recently in Syria has manufacturing issues according to a Wall Street Journal story Sarin Antidote Is Hit With Supply Problems in U.S.published over the weekend. The drug in question, DuoDote, is used by the United States Armed Forces, emergency personnel, and placed by the Centers for Disease Control in the Strategic National Stockpile in the event that the gas is released in the United States. Meridian Medical Technologies, the manufacturer of the drug, sent a letter to wholesalers and health professionals on August 27, 2013 to notify them of problems with the drug’s manufacturing despite having learned of the issue in early Spring. Meridian has received millions of tax payer dollars for doses of this drug, some of which do not meet specifications.

On Thursday, September 12, Congressman Harris sent a letter to Meridian Medical Technologies. The letter (full text below) asks the following:

· How was the problem discovered?

· What caused DuoDote to be out of specification?

· What corrective actions has Meridian taken to ensure future doses are within specifications?

· What actions has Meridian taken to ensure that doses in the Strategic National Stockpile are effective?

· Will the government be charged for DuoDote that needs to be replaced?

“With the recent sarin gas use in Syria, the manufacturing issues surrounding DuoDote put our national security preparedness in question," said Congressman Harris. "I am going to continue asking questions of the company and government agencies so we can all have confidence in our national defenses. Recent actions in Syria show that chemical and biological defenses can no longer be on the back burner."

Are the Mainstream Media Promoting Hate?

I think I will don a loin cloth, stop bathing, and ascend a moutain where I will gibber, drool, and perhaps cĂ¡strate myself and wait to go to Hale-Bopp. This is a patrioitic plan. I don´t want to distance myself too much from my fellow Americans.

Though, on thought, I may welsh on the castration part.

Every morning, as I shamble through the heather of the internet in search of reason (any day now), I find another story of a savage racial attack on whites by blacks. At least, when a black man says, “I´m gonna kill the next white I see,” and does so, I begin to suspect a racial motive. Perhaps this is unfair. Perhaps the gentleman really meant to say, “…find a good book on Keynes and the Austrian school, and compare with Veblen.” I remain suspicious.

Where is this taking us?

Md. Physicians Put High Mark-Up On Workers Comp Pain-Killers

Patients obtaining the pain-killer Vicodin directly from a doctor in Maryland will pay nearly three times more than if they purchased it directly from a pharmacy, according to a new study.

The institute is a national nonprofit organization that provides information about public policy issues involving workers’ compensation systems, which pay for on-the-job injuries or work connected illnesses. Employers must buy insurance to cover their workers.

25 Fast Facts About The Federal Reserve

As we approach the 100 year anniversary of the creation of the Federal Reserve, it is absolutely imperative that the American people understand that the Fed is at the very heart of our economic problems. It is a system of money that was created by the bankers and that operates for the benefit of the bankers.

The American people like to think that we have a "democratic system", but there is nothing "democratic" about the Federal Reserve. Unelected, unaccountable central planners from a private central bank run our financial system and manage our economy. There is a reason why financial markets respond with a yawn when Barack Obama says something about the economy, but they swing wildly whenever Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke opens his mouth.

The Federal Reserve has far more power over the U.S. economy than anyone else does by a huge margin. The Fed is the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of the world [18], and if the American people truly understood how it really works, they would be screaming for it to be abolished immediately. The following are 25 fast facts about the Federal Reserve that everyone should know...

#1 The greatest period of economic growth in U.S. history was when there was no central bank.

NEW LEGISLATION CHANGES TO TAKE EFFECT ON OCTOBER 1

On October 1, 2013, a legislation change will go into effect regarding traffic safety regulations. Maryland police will now be able to stop drivers for hand-held cell phone use and all passengers in a motor vehicle will be required to wear a seat belt. Fines for first-time cell phone use violators will increase from $40 to $75 and passengers that are not buckled up could face an increase in fines from $25 to $50.

“Distracted driving because of cell phone use and texting is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle collisions,” said Ocean City Police Chief Ross Buzzuro. “According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 11 percent of fatal auto accidents and 17 percent of “injury crashes” in 2011 have cited distracted driving as a contributing factor. Drivers should always remember to park the phone before driving.”

Parking the phone is not the only simple thing that can be done to protect safety on the roads. Wearing a seatbelt is one of the single most essential choices a citizen can make while in a vehicle. The NHTSA reports that in 2011, seat belts saved an estimated 11,949 lives nationwide. This includes back seat passengers, not just those in the front seat.

Ocean City police are dedicated to protecting the safety of drivers and will enforce the new legislation changes beginning October 1. Buckling a seatbelt or staying off cellphones are two of the simplest things that can be done to prevent a vehicle collision.

OCPD RECIEVES AWARD FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY ENFORCEMENT

Chief Ross Buzzuro and
Lt. Scott Harner
On September 11, 2013, the Ocean City Police Department and OCPD Lt. Scott Harner earned awards from the Maryland Highway Safety Office for participation in the “Walk Smart” campaign and the strong enforcement efforts against traffic safety violations. OCPD worked very closely with the Highway Safety Office and the Maryland State Highway Administration to create and promote the “Walk Smart” campaign.

Lt. Harner is the head of OCPD’s Traffic Safety Unit and has served as one of the driving forces behind the department’s success in traffic and pedestrian safety. Not only has the “Walk Smart” campaign yielded a nearly 50 percent decrease in pedestrian collisions, but the Traffic Safety Unit has also removed numerous drunk drivers from Ocean City roads and have also been responsible for many drug and weapons arrests. Lt. Harner is often the creator behind many of the department’s innovative and active traffic enforcement strategies that produce such great results.

The Ocean City Police Department is proud to have received this award and will continue to keep Ocean City’s roads safe through education and enforcement.

Are Police More Dangerous Than Criminals?

The goon thug psychopaths no longer only brutalize minorities–it is open season on all of us –the latest victim is a petite young white mother of two small children

The worse threat every American faces comes from his/her own government.

At the federal level the threat is a seventh war (Syria) in 12 years, leading on to the eighth and ninth (Iran and Lebanon) and then on to nuclear war with Russia and China.

The criminal psychopaths in Washington have squandered trillions of dollars on their wars, killing and dispossessing millions of Muslims while millions of American citizens have been dispossessed of their homes and careers. Now the entire social safety net is on the chopping bloc so that Washington can finance more wars.

Catholic Mass With Nancy Pelosi

Last Saturday afternoon, in Washington , D.C. , an aide to Nancy Pelosi visited the Bishop of the Catholic Cathedral in D.C. He told the Cardinal that Nancy Pelosi would be attending the next day's Mass, and he asked if the Cardinal would kindly point out Pelosi to the congregation and say a few words that would include calling Pelosi a saint.

The Cardinal replied, "No. I have no respect for the woman, and there are issues of conflict with the Catholic Church over certain of Pelosi's views."

Pelosi's aide then said, "Look, I'll write a check here and now for a donation of $100,000 to your Cathedral if you'll just tell the congregation you see Pelosi as a saint."

The Cardinal thought about it and said, "Well, the Church can use the money, so I'll work your request into tomorrow's sermon."

As Pelosi's aide promised, Nancy Pelosi appeared for the Sunday worship and seated herself prominently at the forward left side of the center aisle. As promised, at the start of his sermon, the Cardinal pointed out that Ms.Pelosi was present.

The Cardinal went on to explain to the congregation, "While Mrs. Pelosi's presence is probably an honor to some, the woman is not numbered among my personal favorite personages. Some of her most egregious views are contrary to tenets of the Church, and she tends to flip- flop on many other issues. Nancy Pelosi is a petty, self-absorbed hypocrite, a thumb sucker, and a nit-wit. Nancy Pelosi is also a serial liar, a cheat, and a thief. I must say, Nancy Pelosi is the worst example of a Catholic I have ever personally witnessed. She married for money and is using her wealth to lie to the American people. She also has a reputation for shirking her Representative obligations both in Washington, and in California. The woman is simply not to be trusted."

The Cardinal concluded, "But, when compared with President Obama, Mrs.Pelosi is a saint."

It's The Law: Washington State Lawmakers Don't Get Speeding Tickets

Washington state legislators headed to work can't get speeding tickets -- or so says the Washington State Patrol and at least one local police department.
A spokesman for WSP says Washington lawmakers are constitutionally protected from receiving noncriminal traffic tickets during a legislative session, as well as 15 days before. A spokeswoman says The Tacoma Police Department abides by a similar policy.

State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins says the privilege not only applies to moving violations near the state Capitol in Olympia, but potentially anywhere in the state.

The logic? Detaining lawmakers on the road -- even for the time it takes to issue them a speeding ticket -- may delay them from getting to the Capitol to vote.

Manziel legend grows even more vs. Bama

On Saturday Johnny Manziel was sublime, posting one of the greatest individual efforts in college football quarterbacking history.

I know, I know. Alabama won, and for the bottom line crew out there, winning and losing is all that matters. Football's a team game, and Alabama's team is better than Texas A&M's team this year just like it was last year. But most of us don't watch football for methodical, robotic dominance. We watch sports because we just might see something transcendent.

And Manziel was transcendental, otherwordly. He sliced and diced Alabama's defense like it had never been done before in the proud history of Crimson Tide football. He tore apart a Nick Saban defense like it had never been destroyed in the storied history of Nick Saban's long coaching career of defensive dominance.

For months we'd talked about how Manziel would respond now that Nick Saban had months to prepare for him. For thousands of hours Saban schemed ways to stop Manziel.

And on Saturday, despite all his efforts, Manziel was even better this year than he was last year.

Yes, Texas A&M lost, but in the process Johnny Manziel further burnished his legendary and mythical status.

They'll be talking about Johnny Manziel in Texas and beyond until long after every person reading this column today is long gone.

Not bad for a Texan 20-year-old with a football in his hand.

Sure, there's a segment of conservative white America that wanted to see Johnny Manziel humbled, wanted Nick Saban and his rigorous process to knock the crap out of this cocky, audacious pipsqueak of a quarterback who dared to speak out of turn and freelance and sit courtside for NBA games and hang out with the rapper Drake and not genuflect at the false altar of forced sporting modesty.

I suppose these people have their own reasons. Lots of us crave law and order and the tamping down of individuality. We all bring our values to sports, and for conservative fans there's a "right way" and a "wrong way" to play football. And Johnny Manziel plays "the wrong way." The subtext here is clear: He's too uppity and needs to be shown his place by a conservative society.

David Stockman On 2008: "Hank Paulson's Folly: AIG Was Safe Enough To Fail" Part 1

A decisive tipping point in the evolution of American capitalism and democracy—the triumph of crony capitalism—took place on October 3, 2008. That was the day of the forced march approval on Capitol Hill of the $700 billion TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) bill to bail out Wall Street. This spasm of financial market intervention, including multi-trillion-dollar support lines provided to the big banks and financial companies by the Federal Reserve, was but the latest brick in the foundation of a fundamentally anti-capitalist rĂ©gime known as “Too Big to Fail” (TBTF). It had been under construction for many decades, but now there was no turning back. The Wall Street bailouts of 2008 shattered what little remained of the old-time fiscal rules.

There was no longer any pretense that the free market should determine winners and losers and that tapping the public treasury requires proof of compelling societal benefit. Not when AAA-rated General Electric had been given $30 billion in taxpayer loans and guarantees to avoid taking modest losses on toxic assets it had foolishly funded with overnight borrowings that suddenly couldn’t be rolled over.

Even more improbably, Goldman Sachs had been handed $10 billion to save itself from alleged extinction. Yet it then swiveled on a dime and generated a $29 billion financial surplus—$16 billion in salary and bonuses on top of $13 billion in net income—for the year that began just three months later.

Even if Goldman didn’t really need the money, as it later claimed, a round trip from purported rags to evident riches in fifteen months stretched the bounds of credulity. It was reminiscent of actor Gary Cooper’s immortal 1950s expression of suspicion about Communism. “From what I have heard about it,” he told a congressional committee, “it isn’t on the level.”

GOVERNOR O'MALLEY STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF FORMER INTERNATIONAL LONGSHOREMEN'S ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT RICHARD HUGHES

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Governor Martin O'Malley issued a statement on the passing of Richard P. Hughes, Jr., former President of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and longshoreman at the Port of Baltimore.

“For over 50 years, Richie Hughes served as the voice of the men and women at the International Longshoremen’s Association who work tirelessly to connect our State to cities and ports half a world away.

“Richie was fearless, always willing to laugh in the face of overwhelming odds, but his legendary toughness was always moderated by a classic Irish-American wit. He was both fierce negotiator - and caring friend. Richie worked every day of his life with the best interests of the longshoreworkers, his family, and friends close to his heart.

“Today our prayers are with Richie’s family and all of those who called him a friend.”
