Ireton Corrects Daily Times Error In Wastewater Treatment Plant Story: YOU MAKE THE CALL

In an effort to keep the citizen’s of Salisbury informed, Mayor James Ireton, Jr. would like to correct a recently published, May 4, 2013, report in the Salisbury Daily Times regarding effluent that was released into the Wicomico River from the Waste Water Treatment Plant during Hurricane Sandy.

“I’d like to inform the public of the correct facts of this case. It has been
erroneously reported that the WWTP “spilled” almost 500,000 gallons of sewage into the Wicomico River due to Hurricane Sandy. At that time, due to an unusually high tide level during the storm, our fully treated water flow backed up slightly in the discharge manifold.

This back up caused about 500,000 gallons of fully treated water to flow out of the final water sampling station into an adjacent channel that is designed specifically for these events. It is important for the media to understand and report responsibly these events to the public. The staff at the WWTP, Salisbury Public Works Director Gardner, and I are on a round the clock heightened alert for issues that directly affect the WWTP and ultimately the Wicomico River and the Chesapeake Bay," said Mayor Ireton

Yet Salisbury News received the following message...

Joe,

I am one of your readers even though I live in Worcester County.

Delmarvanow.com has reported on this waste water spill and, as usual, the city is covering their butts. My husband is the "employee" and when he reported the water to his supervisor at 5:45 am, he followed the procedure he was taught and opened the valve - which he then reported to the supervisor who thanked him and told him nothing else. He never mentioned "ground water or rain water" as the Plant says he did. The high water alarms never activated and he had checked all of the areas including the area where the overflow supposedly was occurring, both at 5 and at 7 when he collected the scheduled water samples. The WWTP told him it occurred before 8 am (The Times reports that the city says it happened at 10 am...he got off at 8 am). My husband was never consulted during the "fact finding investigation" the supposedly took 2 weeks to do. The letter he received firing him had many inconsistencies and stated he neglected procedures/protocols that were not even actual procedures/protocols.

His supervisors Mike Banning, Maria Bailey and Doug Ehrisman have suddenly in the last 8 months begun to "write him up" for petty infractions after he had had no infractions for 2 1/2 years. This began coincidentally when Maria Bailey returned to this position and my husband applied to be a shift supervisor. My husband was denied the position twice, although the first time he was told he was their 2nd choice. One of the people they hired over him was fired fairly quickly because he was keeping notes on the way he was being treated and Ms. Bailey found it and fired him.

My husband was the only person with a degree (in Biology) and the only person to pass the WWTP tests without cheating. Some of them had to take the test 15 times over a period of 9 years (they were told they had to pass it within one year of hire) and they could only pass it when the answers were given to them. My husband and another employee - that they let go for no reason - saw that they had answer sheet and they bragged about using it and spoke about possibly giving it to others who were hired as the supervisors (from outside and who had no WWTP experience.)

I know this is a lot of info, but I'm sure the citizens of Salisbury and any future hires for the WWTP would appreciate this being cleared up. There is a lot more sordid information to go with this.

Man Charged in NY Had Connections to Canadian Terror Suspects

A Tunisian man has been charged in New York for lying about his work visa because he wanted to facilitate "an act of terrorism" and authorities say he had connections to the thwarted terror plot that involved derailing a passenger train near the Canadian border.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that the man has ties to the two suspects arrested recently in what the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said was an "al-Qaida-supported" plot.

Law enforcement sources tell NBC 4 New York that Ahmed Abassi met with the Canadian terror suspects and may have helped to radicalize them. The charges Thursday said he lied about his visa documents in an effort to "facilitate an act of international terrorism."

Report: CBS News Bosses Irked By Correspondent's Thorough Benghazi Reporting

The biggest Benghazi-related story that took place outside of the House Oversight Committee's hearing room today is this item in Politico, regarding CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson. She's the reporter who famously drew White House officials' profane ire over her unapologetic pursuit of the Fast & Furious scandal story; now she's apparently facing searing criticism from another source: Her own bosses. Why? Because she's been covering the Benghazi story too aggressively. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you media bias:
"Attkisson, who holds a third-degree black belt in taekwondo, takes a fighting stance when she feels she’s being stonewalled. Which is exactly what she thinks the White House has done to her on Benghazi," Farhi writes. But from where Attkisson is sitting, there are actually two Goliaths, one of which is almost entirely absent from the Post profile. The second Goliath is CBS News, which has grown increasingly frustrated with Attkisson's Benghazi campaign. CBS News executives see Attkisson wading dangerously close to advocacy on the issue, network sources have told POLITICO. Attkisson can't get some of her stories on the air, and is thus left feeling marginalized and underutilized. That, in part, is why Attkisson is in talks to leave CBS ahead of contract, as POLITICO reported in April. Farhi mentions "internal conflicts" in the final paragraph, though he seems to dismiss them. The "internal conflicts" are indeed real -- Attkisson is still eyeing an exit, according to sources -- and provide important context for today's piece. Today, CBS News is celebrating Attkisson's commitment to the Benghazi story. It's good press. But that support is an aberration.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Shameless Rides Again

Maryland's Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley has mounted his trusty steed to sally forth and carry the banner of shamelessness once again. And people wonder why I call him Martin O'Shameless.

Years ago, when he was mayor of Baltimore, city schools ran up a deficit of at least $58 million. O'Malley pretty much admitted that he repeatedly asked the school superintendent questions designed to get to the bottom of the deficit, but got no answers.

In other words, he failed. But when he ran for governor, he shamelessly ran on a record of how fine and dandy Baltimore schools were. They weren't. The man ran on a record of failure, and won.

Just days after the scandal broke with indictments raining down at the city detention center, a federal grand jury has handed up a new box load of allegations.

This time it's involving the Chesapeake Detention Center.

That jail is across the street from the city detention center where 13 prison guards are accused of cooperating with the Black Guerilla Family Gang.

Business Group Leaders Say Maryland Needs To Be More Competitive On Taxes

Greater Baltimore Committee Chairman
Brian Rogers of T. Rowe Price Group

With a report Monday by CEO magazine ranking Maryland among the 10 worst states to do business, the Greater Baltimore Committee said it’s going to renew its push to improve the state’s competitiveness.

“I’m always struggling with why we think we’re so good and others think we’re not,” said Brian Rogers, chairman of the T. Rowe Price Group who chairs the Greater Baltimore Committee’s board.

Rogers told the GBC’s annual meeting Wednesday night that despite Maryland’s good schools, highly educated workforce and quality of life, it’s a real concern that the state ranks at best in the middle of the pack for doing business.

The Widening Chasm

An independent, critical account of the American economy would soon raise questions about the structural causes of inequality.

That some sectors of the economy will be doing better than others is natural. If you're a landlord or mobile-apps coding genius in San Francisco, the economy is excellent. Those working in the vast North American oil-patch are experiencing a boom economy. Realtors in resurgent markets such as Miami are having their best year since the top of the bubble in 2007.

This can be viewed through any number of lens, one of which is the inherent inequality of capitalism: capital and labor flow to what is most profitable at this point in time, and capital and labor left stranded in low-yield, declining sectors suffer poor returns and lower wages.

This inequality can be seen as the systemic cost of a dynamic economy in which capital and labor are free to move to better opportunities.

It can even be argued that the more dynamic and fast-changing the system, the greater the inequality, as those who move fast enough to take advantage of new opportunities reap most of the gain (The Pareto Distribution of 80/20 is often visible in these sorts of distributions).

Economic systems that can be gamed by bribery or purchased political influence are also inherently unequal, as those with power are more equal than those without power. This is the classic feudal society or crony-capitalist kleptocracy.

Those benefitting within the crony-capitalist kleptocracy will of course claim that the society is a meritocracy and their advantages are the result of their own hard work and brilliance (and perhaps luck if they are honest enough to admit to being lucky).

As a result, it is difficult to tease apart the capitalist functions of the U.S. economy from the cartel-state, crony-capitalist kleptocracy that I call neofeudalism.

What we do know is that the top 1/10th of 1% is reaping most of the income gains.

Army Corps To Let Nature Address Inlet Jetty Beach

OCEAN CITY -- A rarely-seen “anomaly” in the Ocean City Inlet reappeared this week in the form of a wide, sandy beach on the south side of the north jetty in an area typically under water and pounded by waves.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which plowed through the resort in late October and other coastal storms, nearly all of the beaches in the area were altered to varying degrees with sand eroded from some areas and deposited in others. Perhaps the most startling change in the days after Sandy passed through the area was a sandy spit of new beach as wide as 25 feet at different times depending on the tide on the south side of the rocky north jetty, which, along with the south jetty on the opposite side, provide the manmade bookends for the Inlet created eight decades ago.

City officials and long-time locals said after the storm they had never seen a sandy beach form on the south side of the jetty and surveys were performed to determine the extent of the silting in of the Inlet. The sandy beach on the south side of the Inlet eventually disappeared again, likely corrected by natural processes, but it reappeared again this week. On Tuesday, the beach formed on the Inlet side of the jetty wide enough to set up an umbrella and chair or to walk a dog on. At least one surfer even rode a wave in the Inlet that was breaking on the beach on Tuesday.

Same-Sex Domestic Partners To Lose State Benefits

WASHINGTON — Maryland state employees in a same-sex domestic partnership will soon be unable to include their partner or their partner’s children on their health insurance, now that the state has legalized same-sex marriage.

No new domestic partners will be able to enroll in state health benefits beginning in July, and in mid-2013, no domestic partners will be covered. About 280 active and retired state workers are covering a same-sex domestic partner, said Robin Sabatini, Maryland Department of Budget and Management chief of staff.

Maryland voters passed the Question 6 referendum in November, which legalized same-sex marriage in the state by upholding the Civil Marriage Protection Act. Same-sex couples could marry beginning Jan. 1, which sparked the change in health care coverage, Sabatini said.

PORT SETS RECORD BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENTS

The Port of Baltimore had a record year in 2012, including: general cargo from the port’s public marine terminals (9.59 million tons—up eight percent from 2011); autos (652,000 cars – most in the U.S. and up 18 percent from 2011); farm and construction machinery ( 1.09 million tons—most in the U.S. and up 16 percent from 2011); containers (6.29 million tons—up seven percent); and coal (19.6 million tons of exported coal—up two percent from 2011). The Port’s public and private marine terminals saw 36.8 million tons of cargo cross their docks in 2012. The total dollar value amount of that cargo was more than $54 billion, the Port’s highest dollar value ever.

The Port of Baltimore is ranked as the top port among 360 U.S. ports for handling autos and light trucks, farm and construction machinery, imported forest products, imported sugar, imported aluminum and imported gypsum. Baltimore ranks second in the U.S. for exported coal and imported iron ore. Overall, Baltimore is ranked ninth for the total dollar value of cargo and 11th for cargo tonnage. Business at the Port of Baltimore generates about 14,630 direct jobs, while about 108,000 jobs in Maryland are linked to port activities. The Port is responsible for $3 billion in personal wages and salary and more than $300 million in state and local taxes.

Wheelchair-Accessible Van Maker That Got $50 million DOE Loan Shuts Down

A wheelchair-accessible van maker that received $50 million through the same Energy Department loan program that funded Fisker Automotive has shut its doors and laid off its employees.

The DOE froze the Vehicle Production Group’s loan after the company’s finances fell below the required level, former CEO John Walsh told USA Today. About 100 employees were laid off when VPG closed without fanfare in February, but the company has not filed for bankruptcy.

VPG used the advanced technology vehicles manufacturing loan to equip accessible vans with engines powered by compressed natural gas. Production of the MV-1 vans was supposed to create at least 900 jobs, and VPG expected to produce about 22,650 of the vans per year, according to the DOE’s November 2010 loan announcement.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY LEADS CELEBRATION OF NEW 50-FOOT-DEEP BERTH AND SUPERSIZED CRANES AT PORT OF BALTIMORE

Public-private partnership project creates 5,700 Maryland jobs

Baltimore one of two East Coast ports that can accommodate extra large ships

BALTIMORE, MD – Governor Martin O’Malley, joined by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and private sector partners from Highstar Capital and Ports America Chesapeake, today led celebration of a new 50-foot-deep berth and four supersized container cranes at the Port of Baltimore’s Seagirt Marine Terminal. The project is part of a larger public-private partnership (P3) agreement that is supporting 5,700 new jobs and will allow the Port of Baltimore to accommodate larger ships and attract more cargo to Maryland. The new berth and cranes are key elements of the 50-year agreement between the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Maryland Port Administration (MPA) and Highstar Capital’s Ports America Chesapeake to lease and operate the 200-acre Seagirt Marine Terminal. Under the agreement, Ports America Chesapeake has daily operational control of Seagirt, but the state continues to own the facility.

“This new 50-foot-deep berth and these cranes were absolutely critical to the long-term future of the Port of Baltimore, enabling Maryland to retain existing business and jobs while allowing us to accommodate new business and create new jobs that will come aboard the larger ships that are on the horizon,” said Governor O’Malley. “Through our collaboration with Ports America, we’re moving the Port of Baltimore forward, creating jobs and connecting our State with cities and ports half a world away. This project puts the Port of Baltimore in an excellent competitive position when the Panama Canal expansion is completed in 2015 -- a project that will literally change the face of the maritime shipping business.”

This P3 project and partnership between the MPA and Ports America Chesapeake is expected to generate up to $1.8 billion in total investment and revenue for the State of Maryland over the life of the agreement. It also will generate $15.7 million per year in new taxes for Maryland. The 5,700 jobs created by this agreement include: 3,000 jobs to build the new berth for the Port of Baltimore and for related Maryland highway projects, and another 2,700 jobs to handle the anticipated increased container business that the Port will begin to see very soon.

“The Seagirt P3 is an important milestone. For Maryland it is creating 5,700 jobs and continuing the leadership of the Port of Baltimore,” said Christopher H. Lee, Founder and Managing Partner of Highstar Capital. “The longer term economic benefits to our state are immense. For America, it shows that the public sector and the private sector can truly partner together on a win-win basis to bring our infrastructure back to the world class levels we last enjoyed in the 1960’s without onerous tax hikes and hard political choices between investment, jobs and the health and welfare of all Americans. I thank Governor O’Malley for his extraordinary leadership in setting an example for all 50 states and once again proving that in Maryland, we get things done, the right way.”

Words That Replace Thought By Thomas Sowell

If there is ever a contest for words that substitute for thought, "diversity" should be recognized as the undisputed world champion.

You don't need a speck of evidence, or a single step of logic, when you rhapsodize about the supposed benefits of diversity. The very idea of testing this wonderful, magical word against something as ugly as reality seems almost sordid.

To ask whether institutions that promote diversity 24/7 end up with better or worse relations between the races than institutions that pay no attention to it is only to get yourself regarded as a bad person. To cite hard evidence that places obsessed with diversity have worse race relations is to risk getting yourself labeled an incorrigible racist. Free thinking is not free.

The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that the government has a "compelling interest" in promoting diversity – apparently more compelling than the 14th Amendment's requirement of "equal protection" of the law for everybody.

How does a racially homogeneous country like Japan manage to have high quality education, without the essential ingredient of diversity, for which there is supposedly a "compelling" need?

Conversely, why does India, one of the most diverse nations on Earth, have a record of intergroup intolerance and lethal violence today that is worse than that in the days of our Jim Crow South?

Central Bankers Should Be Arraigned As "War Criminals

Coming off the heels of a fantastic performance in recent local elections, the UKIP under the leadership of Nigel Farage continues to make waves in both the UK and the Continent itself. In this case, I refer to a recent powerful performance at the European Parliament courtesy of Godfrey Bloom (UKIP), member of the European Parliament.

For many years, I have stated that Ben Bernanke was and is committing crimes against humanity, and would one day stand trial much like the war criminals at Nuremberg. It appears I am no longer alone in echoing such sentiments, as Mr. Bloom has just done so before the European Parliament.

I once said that Nigel Farage is Category 5 political hurricane. That hurricane has landed.

WILL THIS BE REPORTED ON MSNBC?

Americans Convinced Gun Homicides Soar Despite Actual Plunge In Gun Crimes
In yet another example of the massive gap between the American people’s perception of what is going on around them (whether by propaganda channels or simply cognitive bias) and the actual reality, Reuters reports that while gun-related homicides are down 39% from the 1993 peak, only 12% of people believe that gun crimes have fallen. Non-fatal firearm crimes declined by 69% to 467,300 in the same period but56% of Americans believe that gun crime is higher now than it was 20 years ago, the Pew Research Center said its poll showed. The dichotomy between record food stamp usage (and non-employment) and multi-year highs in consumer sentiment comes to mind – we wonder which is more ‘real’.

Highlights of the report:
Firearm-related homicides declined 39%, from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011.
Nonfatal firearm crimes declined 69%, from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 victimizations in 2011.
For both fatal and nonfatal firearm victimizations, the majority of the decline occurred during the 10-year period from 1993 to 2002.
Firearm violence accounted for about 70% of all homicides and less than 10% of all nonfatal violent crime from 1993 to 2011.
About 70% to 80% of firearm homicides and 90% of nonfatal firearm victimizations were committed with a handgun from 1993 to 2011.
From 1993 to 2010, males, blacks, and persons ages 18 to 24 had the highest rates of firearm homicide.
In 2007-11, about 23% of victims of nonfatal firearm crime were injured.
About 61% of nonfatal firearm violence was reported to the police in 2007-11.
In 2007-11, less than 1% of victims in all nonfatal violent crimes reported using a firearm to defend themselves during the incident.
In 2004, among state prison inmates who possessed a gun at the time of offense, less than 2% bought their firearm at a flea market or gun show and 40% obtained their firearm from an illegal source.
Males, blacks, and persons ages 18 to 24 were most likely to be victims of firearm violence

WICOMICO CO. MAN CHARGED FOR ASSAULT ON TROOPER

The Wicomico County man who held a state trooper inside his car while he tried to flee a traffic stop has been charged in connection with the incident.

The suspect is identified as Harry F. Wyatt-Swift, 23, of Salisbury, Md. He is charged with attempted first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, first and second degree assault, second degree assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless endangerment, false imprisonment, an obstructing/hindering a police officer.

State Police Homicide Unit investigators served the warrant on Wyatt-Swift yesterday afternoon at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he is undergoing treatment for at least one gunshot wound and for injuries sustained when he subsequently ran into a utility pole guide wire and his car overturned. A court commissioner was at the hospital and conducted an initial appearance proceeding after the warrant was served. Wyatt-Swift was ordered held without bond and remanded to the custody of the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center. He will remain under guard by a security detail during his hospital stay, which is expected to last at least the next several days.

Wyatt-Swift was stopped by a state trooper from the Salisbury Barrack shortly before 1:30 a.m. on May 7, 2013, near Salisbury, for speeding and suspected DUI. When he attempted to flee the stop, the trooper reached in the vehicle to get the keys. The investigation indicates Wyatt-Swift grabbed the trooper’s arm and drove off, with the trooper hanging out the driver’s side window. After repeated commands to stop were ignored, the trooper was in fear for his life and shot Wyatt-Swift. The suspect released the trooper and drove on until he struck the guide wire and overturned. He was taken into custody when he surrendered to police after a brief search.

My Thoughts

I have been running Salisbury News for almost 9 years now. It never ceases to amaze me just how many comments come in demanding everyone take back their country and or communities.

I think we've all seen just how local and even federal elections are run. How many of us stood around and said, I didn't vote for Obama, yet he got elected. You can call friends and relatives and they'll pretty much tell you the same.

We watch, (little by little) our President talk about taking away our guns and then the democrats come out and say, that's just not true. Obama isn't trying to take your guns. Then we see unfortunate disasters  and all of a sudden it's OK for Obama to attempt to create laws to take away our guns.

What most of you have truly been missing is how Obama is doing even worse. He's been buying up ammunition in such masses that the regular citizen not only can't find it, now they can't afford it when they do find it somewhere.

A few weeks ago I met with my former In Laws. They happen to own one of the largest ammunition distributorships in the United States. It turns out even they can't get their hands on ammunition any longer and they have quite a customer base.

The Mayor of Salisbury wants to increase your taxes to pay for a pie in the sky Rain Tax, yet every other municipality on the Eastern Shore told O'Malley to go pound sand. I think we've ALL seen what the cleaning of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation has delivered, a big fat ZERO. It's a game to claim that funding will deliver a positive change, yet it's impossible. Until we stop the pollution from other states feeding into our tributaries, nothing is going to get cleaned, nor will the Wicomico River. Yet we remain stupid, we continue to pay into these scams and guess what, NO ONE is taking back our communities, our state or our Country.

We watch the news in other Countries where voter fraud is abundant. So I ask you, why are Americans so blind? Why do Americans say it's time to take back our Country, then allegedly do nothing. When I see comments calling people sheeple, it's true.

The ONLY real MEN this Country has ever seen are in HISTORY BOOKS. Oh, that's right, they don't teach HISTORY in Schools any more. Back in the day, real men fought for what is right. Now we allegedly elect people into Office we're supposed to believe are doing what is in the best interest of our Country. You and I both know that is no longer true.

America is no longer the Country our founding fathers fought and died for. America is now all about survival, not the land of the free.

Perhaps we should change "Take Back Our Country" to "Yes Sir, May I Have Another".

Banks Warn Bernanke Of The First Two Bubbles: Student Loans And Farmland

A panel of bankers warned the Fed in February that their extreme monetary policy is forcing institutions to "accept greater credit-risk" than "makes sense" and student debt and farmland prices are in a bubble. We first started to explain the bubble in student debt over two years ago and since then the bubble has become larger (and the underlying structure much more fragile as delinquencies soar). Farmland rose in price over 16% last year (according to the Chicago Fed) and has surged 8% per annum over the past decade. Credit risk is now at levels associated with the CDO-driven liquidity excess of 2006. "Further accommodation is not warranted," the minutes of this meeting show - uncovered by Bloomberg via the FOIA. The comments should cause Bernanke and his merry men to pause for breath but of course it is likely what he wanted all along."Growth in student debt... has parallels to the housing crisis," and "agricultural land prices are veering further from what makes sense," are just two of the bankers' comments, adding that this "will ultimately result in higher loan losses," which is odd since every bank is adjusting down its loan-loss-reserves and juicing earnings.

EPA Rules To Shut Down More Than 280 Coal-Fired Units

New analysis shows that the coal industry is in for some tough years ahead, as more than 280 coal-fired generating units are slated to be shut down in part due to stricter Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a partnership of industry groups, reports that the number of coal plants slated for shutdown is fives times greater than the EPA predicted would be forced to shut down due to its regulations.

Coal-fired electric generating plants will be shut down across 32 states, with the hardest hit states being Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Indiana, according to the coalition.

RG3's Pink Cleats, Photos Raise $33K for Charity

Robert Griffin III's knee is still feeling fine. His ability to turn a room upside down is better than ever.

The Washington Redskins quarterback made an appearance — and quite an impact — Wednesday at a luncheon for the American Cancer Society. He raised $33,000 in a matter of minutes, more than half of the $60,000 tallied during the auction portion of the fundraiser.

The crowning moment came when a man from Texas paid $15,000 for a pair of pink cleats worn by Griffin in a game last season.

Attorney General Says Gun Law Is Constitutional

Maryland's comprehensive gun-control measure is constitutional, Attorney General Doug Gansler wrote in a 25-page legal review made public on Wednesday.

The letter to Gov. Martin O'Malley, who proposed the plan in January and is scheduled to sign it at a bill ceremony next Thursday, outlines legal opinions about some of the main parts of the measure that was approved by the Maryland General Assembly last month. Gansler noted that the measure was "crafted carefully to balance the rights of legitimate gun owners with the need for increased public and law enforcement safety from gun violence."

"We are confident that the resulting legislation is constitutional and legally defensible," Gansler wrote in the April 30 letter to the Democratic governor.

Pig And Jig Bbq Competition Was Rigged!

Joe,

I was not going to say anything about this, but the more I thought about it the more I got fired up. I decided to attend pig and jig on Saturday may 4th in snow hill. About the time I was there, they were giving out awards on stage for the bbq competition. I noticed a young boy maybe around the age of 12 won champion. I thought wow he beat all the grown men! Then afterwards, I seen the lady that gave the awards out kiss the little boy on the forehead, thought wow she knows him? So I began walking around and heard people talking that was her grandson that won, and her son in law that came in 2nd! Now, I don’t know about you, but if that had been me in that bbq competition, I would have been furious. That family even had trophies from previous years they won. Now I know how they got those. Pig and a Jig should be called pig and a jig and rig!! The whole event was boring anyway. I will stick with pork in the park.

Newest Member Of Salisbury Zoo To Be Introduced TODAY At 1pm

Salisbury Zoo – Acting Director Ann Konopik and Mayor Ireton to Introduce Newest Member of Salisbury Zoo Family at 1pm on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Andean Bear exhibit

On Wednesday, May 1st the Salisbury Zoo received a beautiful young female Andean Bear
from the National Zoo. Her name is Chaska, which means the Inca goddess of Venus, the guardian of young maidens and flowers. And a goddess she is, to the Zoo! After the loss of the Salisbury Zoo's beloved Andean Bear Poopsie, one of the oldest Andean Bears in the world, Chaska’s arrival brings a lively companion to the Zoo’s other Andean Bear, Gritto.

Chaska was born three years ago at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington D.C.
where she had one litter mate.

Acting Zoo Director Ann Konopik has stated, “We at the Zoo are so very excited with the
addition of a new Andean Bear. It has been several years since the Zoo has exhibited such a young, active and agile bear. We are even more excited with the prospect of breeding
Chaska with our current male bear. Our participation in the managed breeding program is possible due to the American Zoological Association accreditation of the Salisbury Zoo.”

The Salisbury Zoo participates in the Andean Bear Species Survival Plan. Chaska’s presence
here at the Salisbury Zoo is significant in that she is a good genetic match for the Zoo’s managed breeding program. The captive Andean Bear population is starting to age and
these younger animals like Chaska are vital to continue to re-populate through attrition.

Did you know . . .

...that Andean bears are the only bears that are primarily vegetarians, excellent tree
climbers and may build tree nests for sleeping and they are native to South America?

...these bears are named for the light coloration around their eyes, which resemble
spectacles or glasses?

…that male Andean Bears can weigh more than 300 pounds?

40 O’Malley-Brown Tax Hikes Will Cost $20 Billion By 2018

Annapolis - Change Maryland released today stunning new figures on the tax impact that is accruing to Marylander's since 2007. In two separate reports released today, Change Maryland documents the cumulative impact to 2014 and the one projected to 2018, the latest year for which there are official government estimates.

From 2007 to 2018, Marylander's will have paid nearly $20 billion in additional taxes and fees stemming from 40 separate O’Malley-Brown increases - an amount which is over and above the tax burden as it existed before 2007 and assumes no additional levies are enacted.

"Nobody expected the total impact to be this staggering, not even me," said Change Maryland founder and Chairman Larry Hogan. "Struggling Maryland families and small businesses simply cannot afford another four years of an O'Malley-Brown tax and spend binge."

Governor Martin O'Malley is backing Lt. Governor Anthony Brown as the heir apparent to the state's top office upon the expiration of his term in 2015. The Lt. Governor has stated a need to continue record "investments" in state government - code word for increasing taxes.

"The prospect of another four years of these policies will have a devastating effect on the productive components of the economy - increasing tax flight, continuing the small business exodus and large corporate headquarters relocating to other states," added Hogan.

Since 2007, nearly 31,000 Marylander's fled to other states, the highest in the region, 6500 small businesses have left or shut down, the second-highest in the region, and just three Fortune 500 companies remain in the state. This is a sharp contrast to 24 large corporate headquarters in Virginia and 23 in Pennsylvania.

The cumulative tax impact from 2007 to 2014 - the eight years of the O'Malley Administration - is $9.5 billion. The dramatic spike of the cumulative tax burden, an over two-fold increase in four years, is due to the phasing in of the gasoline tax and related transportation levies. Additionally, the massive sales, corporate income and sales tax increases from 2007 are recurring revenue generators that, combined with subsequent revenue measures, increase the size and scope of government beyond anything ever witnessed in Maryland history.

"This is not just an argument about big government," said Hogan. "It's about a government that is on auto-pilot to grow exponentially, beyond anything any of us have ever seen in our lifetimes and that comes directly at the expense of the private sector economy that we desperately need to diversify our employment base."

Previously, Change Maryland released a report that updated tax and fee increases following the 2013 session, which brought the total to 37 increases that remove $3.1 billion annually over and above the existing tax burden. These latest reports adds new fees for gun purchases, enacted in 2013, and two newly-discovered measures buried in omnibus legislation and not subject to normal legislative procedures.

Change Maryland is the largest and fastest growing citizens organization in the state, made up of nearly 40,000 people. Its tax reports are derived from official government revenue estimates.

Online Verification Of Student Visas

The Homeland Security Department has reshuffled its priorities in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing. Secretary Janet Napolitano says it will move ahead on a program for online verification of student visas. Digital verification of U.S. visitors has been in development for a decade, but now the student segment will deploy around June 1. NextGov reports, DHS has been working on the system more intensively for the past several months. Before Boston, it had been planning on leading with a system to check foreigners with arrest records.
