How's Mayor Ireton Working Out For You Salisbury?

I took the above image just moments ago, (4:00 pm) on the Wicomico River.

FOUR years ago Mayor Jim Ireton swore he was going to clean up the River. We've had Waste Water Treatment Plant spills into the River since. We've had lift station overflows into the River and now he wants to add a $18.9 million dollar tax/fee to the taxpayers because he just cannot get the job done.

By all means, take this opportunity to tell us in your own words just what Jim Ireton has done to keep ANY of his campaign promises he stated four years ago. I think our viewers would love to see what this part time Mayor has done to move Salisbury Forward. This should get really interesting. Pictures do NOT lie.

BREAKING NEWS: MAYOR IRETON WILL COST THE TAXPAYERS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS

RIGHT NOW THERE ARE ABOUT 60 FIREFIGHTERS, FIRE TRUCKS, AMBULANCES AND THE WHOLE NINE YARDS DOWN AT THE GOVERNMENT OFFICE BUILDING.

MAYOR IRETON HAS CALLED IN THE PRESS TO INTERVIEW THE FIREFIGHTERS WHO WILL DEMAND THE COUNCIL ANSWER AS TO WHY THEY HAVEN'T HIRED RICK HOPPES AS THE NEW FIRE CHIEF.

MANY ARE ON DUTY FIREFIGHTERS IN ATTENDANCE. REMEMBER LADIES & GENTLEMEN, IT WAS JIM IRETON WHO FLAT OUT REFUSED TO EVEN CONSIDER RICK HOPPES AS THE NEXT FIRE CHIEF. HE TURNED HIM DOWN.

NOW, BECAUSE HE IS UP FOR RE ELECTION AND BECAUSE JIM IRETON FEELS HE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO DEBBIE CAMPBELL THE NIGHT BEFORE THE PRIMARY HE HAS CALLED IN ALL THE TROOPS TO ATTEMPT TO MAKE HER LOOK BAD TONIGHT.

YOU MUST GET RID OF THIS CHILDISH AND IMMATURE MAYOR AND REMEMBER, HE IS THE ONE WHO ORIGINALLY TURNED HOPPES DOWN AND FOR GOOD REASON. I ONLY WISH I COULD TELL YOU EXACTLY WHY BUT IT WOULD BE AGAINST THE LAW FOR ME TO EXPOSE IT.

I Just Received This, Believe It Or Not. 11:12 PM

Women Compelled To Register For Draft? Could Happen, Experts Say

The next time Uncle Sam comes calling, he's probably going to want you, too.

The Obama administration recently decided to lift the ban on women in combat. Legal experts and military historians say that decision has opened the door for a change in the law that currently compels only men between age 18 and 25 to register for a military draft.

Never before have women been drafted into military service. Neither the White House nor Congress are in a hurry to make them register for a future call-up.

A Readers Thoughts For The Day

O'Malley as stupid as he seems may not be that stupid. Think about it, with Democrats all they do is play smoke and mirrors, bait and switch. Gun Control is so much on every ones mind that no one is complaining loudly about anything else. Not about fuel costs, not about Gay marriage, not about couple million or more illegals becoming new Democrat voters. Why would NY, MD be so bold to do what they are doing, and O'Malley put a hint in he wanted to be President?
Because people, they are going to keep you so mad about 2nd Amendment that they will slide in the other stuff with out resistance. Then NEXT year, they will have all the sheep to finish us off. If we don't go and forcefully eject some of these politicians, then nothing will change.

Students Made To Wear Burqas – In Texas

There’s a new controversy in Texas involving the online public school curriculum called CSCOPE, which already has been the subject of heated debate and state legislative hearings.

There are reports now that students were made to wear Muslim burqas as part of their public school lessons.

CSCOPE has been facing criticism over its alleged Islamic and anti-American bias. It is a “curriculum management system” now used in 80 percent of Texas classrooms. It recently was the subject of a heated inquiry that culminated in hearings conducted by the Texas Senate Education Committee chaired by state Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston

MEMO ALLEGEDLY LEAKED FROM SOROS-BACKED ORGANIZATION SHOWS PROGRESSIVE PLAN TO ‘EVISCERATE’ CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT

North Carolina’s newly elected Republican governor Pat McCrory hasn’t been in office for even two months, and already progressive groups and their allies within North Carolina’s state Democratic party have the long knives out. That is, if a leaked memo from the progressive organization Blueprint North Carolina is to be believed. The controversial memo was first reported on by the Charlotte Observer this past Friday. The Observer reported:
A group that sent out a memo with tips on how to attack Gov. Pat McCrory and other Republican leaders exercised “bad judgment” that could jeopardize its funding, the director of a foundation that finances the group said Friday.[...]

The memo was forwarded by Stephanie Bass, then Bluprint’s communications director, to the group’s nonprofit allies. The Observer obtained a copy.

3 Construction Workers Busted In WTC Drug Ring

Three World Trade Center concrete workers were just arrested on charges they’ve been peddling drugs to other hardhats at the world’s most famous construction site, The Post has learned.

A woman who answered the phone at the contractor's Lynbrook office said the company had no comment.

Early Voting Causes Electronic Fraud Concerns

WASHINGTON - Voters waited in line for hours to cast their ballots on Election Day.

Now, some claim the move to expand early voting in Maryland could lead to voter fraud.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley is pushing legislation that would expand early voting by increasing the number of early voting days and allowing residents to register on Election Day.

But one part of the bill is raising questions about online security. If it is approved, residents could request a password, use it to download an online ballot through email and mail it back to officials.

Wind Farms = Liberal Dribble

Wind Farms Will Create More Carbon Dioxide, Say Scientists
Thousands of Britain’s wind turbines will create more greenhouse gases than they save, according to potentially devastating scientific research to be published later this year.
The finding, which threatens the entire rationale of the onshore wind farm industry, will be made by Scottish government-funded researchers who devised the standard method used by developers to calculate “carbon payback time” for wind farms on peat soils.
Wind farms are typically built on upland sites, where peat soil is common. In Scotland alone, two thirds of all planned onshore wind development is on peatland. England and Wales also have large numbers of current or proposed peatland wind farms.
But peat is also a massive store of carbon, described as Europe’s equivalent of the tropical rainforest. Peat bogs contain and absorb carbon in the same way as trees and plants — but in much higher quantities.
British peatland stores at least 3.2 billion tons of carbon, making it by far the country’s most important carbon sink and among the most important in the world.
Wind farms, and the miles of new roads and tracks needed to service them, damage or destroy the peat and cause significant loss of carbon to the atmosphere, where it contributes to climate change.

Proposal To Cut Health Care Funding For Pregnant Women Sparks Sharp Opposition

The legislature’s budget analysts have proposed to phase out Medicaid coverage for pregnant women with incomes between 185% and 250% of the federal poverty line on the basis that these women will qualify for the state health exchange implemented under Obamacare.

But officials from Maryland’s $7 billion Medicaid program argue that this shift would jeopardize access to prenatal screenings and other health services that pregnant women and their babies need.

Budget analyst Simon Powell suggested reducing Medicaid coverage in his report because it would reap significant savings for the Medical Care Programs Administration. It results in a $1.5 million reduction in federal funding and another $1.5 million in reduced spending from Maryland’s general fund.

Britain’s Economic Malaise Brought Ratings Downgrade

LONDON — At the root of Moody’s decision to downgrade Britain’s credit rating is a crucial economic reality: Britain has begun to trail its peers in Europe — even bailed-out euro zone economies — when it comes to bringing down its budget deficit and making it attractive for foreigners to buy its exports.
Prime Minister David Cameron and his increasingly jittery coalition government have made deficit and debt reduction a defining priority. In December, his powerful chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, warned that an austerity program that had already resulted in the elimination of tens of thousands public-sector jobs would have to be extended for a year longer than planned, to 2018. But that same austerity program has contributed to long-term economic malaise.

Officials Say Court Reminders For Juveniles Save Time, Detention

In school, and in court, showing up is half the battle. So when statistics revealed that 60 percent of juveniles charged in Baltimore County were missing their court dates, officials decided they needed something to help make sure the youngsters showed up.

The result was the Notification Caller Project, an effort in which a court staffer simply calls juveniles several days before their court dates to remind them — and their parents — of the need to appear.

Officials say the nudge works. Since it began several years ago, figures have turned around — now more than 70 percent of juveniles make their court date.

Congressman Harris Calls On Senate & President Obama To Take Action On Sequester

WASHINGTON, DC—With President Obama’s sequester to take effect in a week, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. released the following statement calling on Senate Democrats and President Obama to take action to avoid the indiscriminant cuts. House Republicans have acted twice to replace President Obama’s sequester, while the Senate and President Obama have done nothing.

“House Republicans have already passed two bills that would offset President Obama’s sequester set to take effect on March 1. The Senate has failed to pass anything and in fact President Obama and Senate Democrats have failed to even put a plan forward. The House has done its job, the Senate and the President have not.

“The sequester was President Obama’s idea and was implemented because he insisted upon it. House Republicans realize the plan was not the best way to get federal spending under control and have since voted twice to replace it with more responsible cuts.

“Senate Democrats and President Obama have yet to propose a plan. Now, they are blaming Republicans instead of upholding their end of the deal – to find a responsible way to replace the sequester. The only mantra that has been floated is more taxes to fuel more runaway government spending. I believe prioritizing spending is a better way to reduce the deficit, and I do not support replacing spending cuts with another tax increase.

“Until Senate Democrats and President Obama come to the table with a serious plan that deals with out of control spending, like House Republicans have twice, President Obama’s sequester will go into effect.”

Three Words To Be A Wall Street Lobbyist

Usually, Wall Street's top lobbyist are chosen from the creme de la creme of business and politics, so if that's any indication, the job requires considerable talent.
According to a quick blog post from DC non-profit Public Citizen, however, you actually only need three magic words to do the job — "innovation", "complexity" and "liquidity" (h/t Politico's Ben White).

Here's how you can do it. Three examples:

Reformers say: “Wall Street behaved relatively well until 1999, when Congress repealed the 1933 Glass-Steagall law separating commercial and investment banking and commerce.”

You say: “Financial innovation overran the anachronism of Glass-Steagall. Today’s economy isn’t your father’s Buick.”

Reformers say: “Derivatives that were intended to manage risk actually magnified it through such products as credit default swaps.”

A Letter To The Editor 2-25-13

REALLY, MR. DAY, 30 MORE SALISBURY POLICE OFFICERS?

At a recent candidates’ forum, Jacob Day said that our police force should be increased by thirty additional officers despite the declining rate of violent crime in Salisbury. His basis for that position is the view of Police Chief Barbara Duncan that they are needed. Apparently she also says that the cost would be about $100,000 each (that’s $3 Million total) per year.

Even with his multiple academic degrees, Mr. Day apparently has not learned that public officials, especially those who provide public safety services, always say that they need more troops. And even police chiefs seldom get what they feel is appropriate, with the possible exception of Birmingham’s famed T. Eugene “Bull” Connor.

With all of the other monetary demands on the City and its shrinking property tax base, we can’t afford to have Mr. Day on the Council.
And the effort of Debbie Campbell that has resulted in better police pay levels has begun to prevent attrition to other jurisdictions. She is a diligent and fiscally prudent member of the Council who should be reelected.

But, getting back to the subject, Day has not said where the additional police pay would come from, and he is too savvy to refer to Louise Smith’s go-to suggested source of funds: “grants.” Of course there’s that so called surplus of $16 Million, which would soon be exhausted. Or perhaps he would move to tweak that proposed new tax that his idol Ireton calls a “stormwater utility” by a few million dollars per year.

And exactly what is his position on what would be a new tax of nearly $19 Million annually to aid in restoration of the Bay? Do you even wonder? After all, Day says that he strongly supports the mayor, works for an environmental advocacy group and is supported by a prominent local environmental activist.

In conclusion, putting it plainly, Day is dangerous and would be a disaster for Salisbury residents if part of a Council majority with Mitchell and Shields, with Ireton as mayor.

The Letter the Daily Times DOESN'T Want You to Read

Tomorrow is Salisbury's council primaries.  It's little surprise that the Daily Times has, as in the past, refused to publish some letters in support of incumbent councilwoman Debbie Campbell.  What is (a little) surprising is their refusal to print a letter critical of the Salisbury city council ... unless the letter was critical of councilwomen Laura Mitchell and Shanie Shields.

That is exactly what has occurred.  Earlier we published a letter from Salisbury resident Kay Gibson.  Gibson originally submitted her letter to the DT.  Editorial page editor Susan Parker doesn't want you to read it before Tuesday's election.  Her boss, GM Tom Claybaugh agrees.  God forbid that YOU be allowed to make up your own mind:
Mitchell, Shields Stage Destructive Performance
If anyone wants to know the real source of conflict on Salisbury’s city council, they need only look at the two members who complain the loudest about “civility,” Laura Mitchell and Shanie Shields.  Listen to the audio of last Tuesday’s work session on the city’s website, www.ci.salisbury.md.us
Mitchell stationed a tape recorder on the table to capture what was obviously a staged performance.  She and Shields disrupted the meeting for a solid hour or more, shouting, interrupting, berating, accusing and more, even trying to goad the council leadership into fights and into shutting down the meeting.  Neither Terry Cohen nor Debbie Campbell took that bait, and both stayed focused on the work.
Mitchell literally bullied the city attorney, attacked me by name and made misrepresentations about the proposed business disclosure ordinance under discussion.  Later that night at the candidate forum at Salisbury University, candidate Jake Day pretty much parroted what Mitchell said about the proposal.  Was this the purpose of the tape recorder?
Shields admitted that night that she “lost it” at the meeting.  Mitchell’s behavior was just as destructive, done in front of state agency representatives and the general public.  Mitchell’s conduct at the last legislative meeting was thoroughly unprofessional, too.
As a frequent attendee at council meetings, I’ve seen these two be anything but civil for nearly two years.  This was no spirited debate of viewpoints on their part.  It was one of the most disgusting displays of behavior for political purposes I have ever seen.
Mary Kay Gibson
Salisbury, MD

Remember, this letter is only tangentially related to the current city elections.  However, we can't let the hoi polloi find out that councilwoman Laura Mitchell is feeding candidate Jake Day his talking points anymore than we can allow the public to find out that Day doesn't hesitate to take as many different stances on a given issue as there are audiences.  For a more detailed analysis of the DT's actions, see my Media Monday column.

Your Papers, Citizen

A staple of American self-esteem is that we Yanks are brave, free, independent, self-reliant, ruggedly individual, and disinclined to accept abuse from anyone. This was largely true in, say, 1930. People lived, a great many of them, on farms where they planted their own crops, built their own barns, repaired their own trucks, and protected their own property. They were literate but not educated, knew little of the world beyond the local, but in their homes and fields they were supreme.

If they wanted to swim buck nekkid in the creek, they swam buck nekkid. If whistle pigs were eating the corn, the family teenager would get his rifle and solve the problem. Government left them alone.

Even in the early Sixties, in rural King George County, Virginia, where I grew up, it was still mostly true. The country people built their own boats to crab in the Potomac, converted junked car engines to marine, made their own crab pots, planted corn and such, and hunted deer. There was very little contact with the government. One state trooper was the law, and he had precious little to do.

In Maryland, Five Wait On Death Row

Vernon Lee Evans Jr. should have been dead by now. A prosecutor did his best to ensure that when he convinced a Maryland jury that Evans was among the worst of the worst, a killer who deserved a punishment more severe than a life spent in prison. He deserved, the prosecutor argued and the jury agreed, to die at the hands of the state.

That was nearly 30 years ago.

In the years since, the motel where Evans gunned down two employees has been replaced by a Howard Johnson. The star witness in the case, a woman who lost her husband and a sister that day, has died. And Evans, who in his own words has “rebuilt” his character, remains on Maryland’s death row, kept alive in a politically forged purgatory.

Maryland To Hold Committee Hearings On 51 Anti-Gun Bills

Maryland --(Ammoland.com)- 2 More Gun Bill Days are Scheduled – 51 Bills to be Heard

Briefly stated, here is the situation:

A total of 51 bills will be heard over 2 days in 3 Committees. Each day we will have bills being heard in 2 different Committees at the same time. This tactic is intended to dilute our numbers, which is why a strong “boots on the ground” turnout is so important. This is especially true on March 5th because the hearings will be in different buildings.

Friday, March 1st @ 1:00 PM:
4 bills in the House Health & Government Operations Committee
7 bills in the House Judiciary Committee (including the Governor’s gun ban)

Tuesday, March 5th @ 1:00 PM
15 bills in the House Judiciary Committee
25 bills in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee

Be sure to click the links immediately below for important information.

Keep up the email pressure; this is critical if we are to prevail in the face of the Governor’s attack on our rights.

GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY NAMED CO-CHAIR OF COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS

WASHINGTON, DC (February 25, 2013) - President Barack Obama has named Governor Martin O’Malley co-chair of the Council of Governors, an entity created by the President that recognizes the important role that state and local governments play in homeland security and defense. The Council brings governors and key federal officials together to address issues associated with the National Guard, homeland security and defense support to civil authorities.

Governor O'Malley, who was first appointed to the Council in 2010, will be joined by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as co-chair. The council consists of ten governors, five Democrats and five Republican, as well as the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the President’s Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Advisor, the Commander of U.S. Northern Command, and the Chief of the National Guard Bureau.

“Protecting the safety and security of the people we serve is the first priority of all elected officials,” said Governor O’Malley. “Together, with our federal, state and local partners, we’re working to build a more resilient Maryland and a more resilient nation.”

Every day, the O'Malley-Brown Administration works to ensure that the State remains prepared for the worst and able to quickly bounce back in case of a disaster. “One of the first issues addressed by the Council of Governors was 'Dual Status Command,' which was identified as the best solution to address governors' long-standing concerns regarding the need to ensure coordination between state and federal military forces during disaster response,” said Maj. Gen. James A. Adkins, adjutant general of Maryland. “During Hurricane Sandy, Governor O'Malley implemented the dual status command concept for the first time leading the way in the implementation of one of the major achievements of the Council of Governors and thereby making Maryland a leader in how we respond to emergencies.”

The Governor is also co-chair of the National Governors Association Special Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety and serves on the U.S. Homeland Security Advisory Council to help shape national homeland security policy.

The O’Malley-Brown Administration continues to make steady progress to enhance the security of Maryland’s critical infrastructure. In December 2012 the State completed the first phase of a statewide 700 MHZ interoperable public safety radio system. This radio system provides clear, digital communication between responder agencies in multiple jurisdictions and is on track to be completed statewide by the end of 2016. The first completed phase covers an area of Central Maryland that includes two-thirds of the State’s critical infrastructure, including the Bay Bridge, BWI-Thurgood Marshal Airport, and the Fort McHenry and Baltimore Harbor Tunnels. At many of these same critical facilities, the Administration has also invested heavily in tools like Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) that assist law enforcement agencies in their mission to protect and secure them. Today, first responders in Maryland have access to a shared CCTV network of more than 800 cameras that provide situational awareness of Maryland’s roads, bridges, tunnels, and other key transportation assets. In 2012, the U.S. Coast Guard awarded the Port of Baltimore a near-perfect score in its annual security assessment for the fourth consecutive year.

- Governor Martin O’Malley announced the appointment of Nina R. Harper as delegate in Baltimore City’s 45th legislative district, filling the vacancy left by the passing of Hattie N. Harrison.

“Nina Harper has spent many years working to improve the opportunities and quality of life for members of the Oliver community,” said Governor O’Malley. “With experience as a community activist and working with members of the business community and local and state government, I am confident Nina Harper will serve the people of Baltimore City with distinction. I appreciate the hard work of the members of the Baltimore City Democratic Central Committee in considering many qualified candidates to represent the citizens of the 45th district.”

Since 2004, Ms. Harper has served as the executive director of the Oliver Community Association and the Oliver Economic Development Corporation. In that role, she manages the day-to-day operations of the office of housing and community development and serves as a liaison between Oliver community residents and government agencies and businesses. Ms. Harper has also organized and implemented community outreach programs and activities for area youth and seniors. Previously she served as a consultant at Harper and Associates where she provided consulting services to non-profit organizations.

Beretta, the nearly 500-year-old family-owned company that made one of James Bond’s firearms, has already invested more than $1 million in the [civilian version of a machine gun designed for special operations forces] and has planned to expand its plant further in Prince George’s County to ramp up production.
