WICOMICO PUBLIC LIBRARY JOINS F.I.R.S.T. ROBOTICS COMPETITION

Wicomico Public Library will join the 5th annual Eastern Shore Qualifier for Maryland’s “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” (FIRST) LEGO League Tournament at Salisbury Middle School December 14th at 9:30 am.

For the first time, two teams from Wicomico Public Library will be participating in the event. The Mechanical Mayhem and Sneaksbots teams have been working at the Downtown Library and Centre Branch since September to prepare for the competition. Library based teams provide a chance to participate to children and teens without access to a school based team. This project is funded through the Wicomico Partnership for Families and Children, the Local Management Board for Wicomico County, with funding from the Governor’s Office for Children.

The Maryland branch of FIRST was founded by Dean Kamen who used robotics and competitions to help students develop the skills needed to flourish in today’s technology-driven society. Judging will begin at 10:45 am. Both teams will be judged on three criteria: robot performance on the competition table, research project and core values. The awards ceremony will begin at 4 pm in the gymnasium.

“We strongly believe robotic competitions provide positive learning experiences for all students and encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields,” said David Harner, coordinator of Secondary and STEM Initiatives for Wicomico County Public Schools.

Wicomico Public Library has locations in Downtown Salisbury, the Centre at Salisbury, in Pittsville, a computer access station in Bivalve, and the Library Bookmobile. Not only does Wicomico Public Library offer numerous resources such as free Internet access, a variety of classes and events, and an online virtual library with eBooks, but it engages with the community by supporting learning, building community, and enriching lives. 1. I believe STEM is the responsibility of Mr. Raygor, the science supervisor.
