Answer To Today's Riddle

The ball costs 5 cents. One dollar more than 5cents is $1.05. The sum of which is $1.10.

  1. Let x = Cost of the ball
    Then x + 1 = Cost of the bat
    x + (x + 1) = 1.10
    2x + 1 = 1.10
    2x = .10
    x = .05 and x + 1 = 1.05

  2. Thank you 1:58. Now I completely understand. You can shove your X's and o's where the sun don't shine. How about getting into the real world with the rest of us. The bat and ball are an issue together and sold together, so it remains as one. So the cost is 1:10.

  3. OR you can just say that the ball cost ten cents (0.10) and the bat cost 1.00 so in actually both are right but if you want to you algebra to find the answer then good for you, point is there is more than one way to solve this answer...

    And to point out, when dealing with monies and things of this nature you don't use algebra or higher math which is more complicated than it needs to be...

    its basic math, called add, subtract, multiply and divide...

    I don't know about you but if you go to a store to get a bat for 1.10 you will not use the math you did to figure out the cost...

  4. An applicable story: In the 1960's travelers stopped to ask directions from a Roxana Delaware local. His answer was Quote: You can't get there from here! True story. His first name was Delmer, also true.

  5. 343, you're wrong. Subtract your .10 ball from your dollar bat and come up with a dollar like the question asks. See?

  6. I just want to go to the store and get this deal. I've been over paying!

  7. It is difficult for me to believe that people would have a problem with a logical mathematical explanation as to how to solve this problem.

    Most problems that people in society have to solve each day are much more complex than this one. Those problems require a logical and algebraic method for determining the solution.

    Go figure! Some of you have dropped the 5 cent ball on this one!

  8. It is clear to me that many on Delmarva are mathematically challenged.

  9. Yeah, I don't get why people are offended when somebody gives them a logical way to think about things. There is nothing wrong with learning something new, you know.

  10. I don't think that 1:58 inferred that this was the only solution, but certainly one that makes sense.

  11. WOW! 701, I'm glad I'm not you! What a DOLT!

    Math is not an opinion! DUH!

  12. He certainly did infer it was the only solution because it is. To qualify all the givens there is one solution. 3:43 says you can use simple logic and addition to get the answer, then states that the ball is 10 cents, bat is $1.00. By reading the question then $1.00 more than 10 cents is $1.10, so by using simple addition $1.10 plus .10 equals $1.20. Wrong answer. Go back to school.
