No Food Stamps For Soda

If one Republican congressman has his way, the days of buying soda or Twinkies with food stamps will be over.

Representative Phil Roe (R., Tenn.) introduced on Tuesday a bill that would require food stamps to be spent only on nutritious food. Roe, a doctor, said in a statement, “By giving SNAP recipients more nutritious choices, we can take a meaningful step towards ending hunger in America.”

  1. This is a good start!

Next, they should eliminate steak, lobster, and crabs by the bushel.....get down to basic nutrition - at the requirements level.

  2. Let's just force EVERYONE to be a vegetarian, and eliminate all the bickering and jealousy.

  3. Praise the Lord!!!!!!!!! Finally somebody is listening to us!!! We are sick and tired of paying for the people of welfare to have chips. sodas, candies and etc. Put a limit on it as well and after two years enough is enough and get a JOB!!!!!!!!!

  5. Back in the day you recirved "govt cheese". It was not good to be on food stamps, but you got the basics and nutrition. I think each county should have a few govt run welfare food banks. Only stock the basics and generic brands. Also recipients would be forced to work a certain amount of hours per week there. That way it costs tax payers less and they are somewhat earning their benefits instead of sitting around eating filet mingon and crab cakes on our dime

  6. 12:21 That would start my revolt. Veggies are a side, not a main course.

  7. What about the people who receive benefits who have two people working in their home? What do you think about them?
Everyone that receives assistance is not a P.O.S. Just so ya know.

  8. 1:40 - in some cases, this money allows the recipients to eventually buy other luxury items (cars, houses, alcohol, tobacco, Bling...). We need to add some additional means testing to prevent long-term abuse.

This should be assistance - not subsistence!

  9. No soda, no candy or cookies, no steak. Food stamps should be used for the healthy foods, fruits and vegtables, protein items (cheese, yogurt, milk, peanut butter) on the less expensive side (to allow the $$ to go further). By doing this they would be healthier, better brain power at school, and have better job opportunities.

  11. Who are any of you to say a person on food stamps can't have a steak. Get out of here with that. As a person who worked the front lines at DSS the key is teaching folks what to buy and how to prepare it. There is a lot of assumption that those using assistance know how to make a food dollar stretch. You know as well as I do that the cheapest stuff in the store is processed food. I agree that tons of straight up junk food isn't good. But you have to give folks a baseline to start with. Get off your high horse and stop spitting rhetoric. A lack of education impacts every aspect of a person's life. Hell I'm a college graduate and it took me quite and few tries with my mom and sister's help to understand how to buy a whole chicken and butcher it to make it last. Stop throwing stones. Understand this is a multidimensional problem. Are there lazy asses who don't try and just want to sell their food stamps and give their kids shit food. Of course, but that is not the case for everyone. Don't paint poor people with such a broad brush.

  12. Ironic, I was in Food Lion today at lunchtime. Checking out in front of me was a woman whose entire purchase was two, 2-litre bottles of Mountain Dew and 6 or 8 candy bars. Total price was $10.06. I could only think to myself...I'm paying for this crap. My personal thanks to Obama and our lawmakers. What in the hell are the politicians thinking? It all disgusts me!

  13. 3:30's comment is thought provoking-the mention of the problem being multidimensional and not knowing how to make money stretch.
Where does this stem from? Lack of family. We are going on several generations now of people more concerned with spitting out babies then nurturing and teaching them how to become self sufficient adults.
And where does this stem from? Government no strings attached handouts.

  14. This is a good idea the next thing is to restart growing food in the US and not get it imported. This would keep the money in the country and decrease the lost of money on fees to the banks that exchanges currencies.

Oh, you poor baby. I guess you would lose your mind if you knew how tax monies are REALLY wasted.

And stop spying on people. The government doesn't like the competition.
