Naval Academy Mulling $6 Million Golf Course Renovation

The Naval Academy is considering more than $6 million in renovations for the Naval Academy Golf Club.

Earlier this year, the academy commissioned Jessup-based McDonald Golf Inc. to review a golf course restoration plan that had been completed in 2007. McDonald presented a revised plan to academy officials two weeks ago, said Chet Gladchuk, the academy's athletic director.

A 44-page plan proposes $4.6 million in improvements to the golf course on the Broadneck Peninsula and nearly $1.9 million in improvements to practice areas. A timeline for construction proposes closing the course from early July 2014 through October 2014.

  2. And exactly how will this help the USA produce the best naval officers? I'm fuzzy on this detail.

  3. I am very familiar with this course. The design is antiquated as well as being expensive to maintain. I am also very familiar with McDonald
Golf. The hybrid bermudagrass is cheaper to maintain because it's lower growth habit means less mowing and it requires virtually no chemicals for disease and insect control. Besides, if it's hybrid bermudagrass it will benefit our economy because the grass will have to come from one of the two only suppliers in the East Coast and both of them are here, Oakwood Sod in Delmar or Collins Wharf Sod in Allen.

  4. Well, is anyone going to attempt to answer 6:47's question especially since it will cost the taxpayers 6 million plus?? We close the White House tours but we build a golf course?? How will this help with our nation's defense?? Does this really make sense or are a lot of us missing something here?? Someone, anybody please??

  5. So, This will save the USA 6.5 million dollars By planting your grass, 715?

    That;s pretty funny....

I'll tell you what; You give me the 6.5, and I'll cut and care for the grass they have for the rest of my life!

  6. And they have the nerve to say athletic coordinator. I'm sorry but there is no such thing as a golfer that is an athlete. I love to golf but believe me it is not an athletic sport
