Georgetown-The Delaware State Police continue to investigate a Trooper involved shooting that occurred late last evening in Georgetown, DE.
The following information outlines the preliminary investigation into a Trooper involved shooting which occurred last night in Georgetown, which has left a 53 year old male of Georgetown, DE in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at approximately 10:11 p.m. as a Trooper responded to a residence located at 22507 Deep Branch Road, Georgetown, to conduct a follow up investigation in reference to a hit and run motor vehicle crash that occurred earlier the same evening in Millsboro, DE.
The Trooper made contact with Michael W. Rogers-53 inside of the house and questioned him as to his involvement in the earlier motor vehicle collision. During the questioning, Rogers who was highly intoxicated became uncooperative and a violent physical struggle ensued between the Trooper and Rogers. The Trooper deployed his Divisional issued Taser (Electronic Control Device), which was ineffective with taking him into custody.
During the continued confrontation with Rogers, the Trooper discharged multiple rounds from his Divisional issued weapon striking Rogers in the upper body and lower extremities.
Michael W. Rogers was transported by ambulance to Beebe Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.
The Trooper was transported to Beebe Hospital for multiple injuries received during the physical altercation and later treated and released.
The Trooper involved in this incident is a 3 year veteran of the Delaware State Police assigned to Troop 4 in Georgetown, DE. He has been placed on administrative leave as per Divisional Policy, pending the outcome of the investigation. The Trooper’s name will not be released at this time.
Detectives from the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and are conducting the investigation.
This is an active and ongoing investigation with Detectives continuing interviews and evidence processing to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.
For starters, the trooper had acquired enough info via his initial witness interviews to justify an additional troopers' assistance. We all make mistakes, but he never should have gone to Rogers house alone. His superiors should not have allowed him to go to Rogers' house alone, given the prior "issues" with Rogers.2 troopers could have handled a billigerant drunk without shooting him.
