Officials Continue Investigating High Number Of Dolphin Strandings Along Eastern Shore

Federal officials are continuing to investigate what's causing an unusually high number of dolphin strandings in Maryland and other states along the the East Coast.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has declared an unusual mortality event for bottlenose dolphins in the Mid-Atlantic region.

They say more than 120 dolphins have died off five states since July. That's seven times the historic average.

  1. This is so sad. Dolphins are very important to the eco-system. I love swimming with them.

    1. I hear ya 6:13. Sometimes I get scared though and have to let go. Something spooks them and causes them to swim straight out away from the shore. I'm afraid they might take me too far out. By the way I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing. It can be very dangerous.

  2. The Menhaden net boats that come from out of state to catch fish which will be used in the pet food industry also get other types of sea life in their nets...they toss what they don't want back into the bay.

  4. I'm surprised more are not dying with all the the nuclear crap from Japan, trash from the tsunami, poison from Katrina and oil spills, dead zone in the Gulf, gasses from fracking and storm Sandy.
