Over the weekend the Salisbury Fire Department was quite busy running errands, not calls. Its not just Salisbury though. Last week we bought some pizza from Delmar Pizza. As we got to the light on Rt. 54 we watched a Delmar Ambulance pull out of their Station and turn left on Rt. 54. They then proceeded to Delmar Pizza where they went inside to pick up a pizza to go. They then headed across Rt. 13 to WaWa to get who knows what and then back to the Station.
Clearly when it gets hot though you can find Salisbury cooling off at TCBY.
Are Firefighters and Paramedics not allowed to eat while on duty? Would you rather they take their personal vehicles and have to drive back to the station to pick up the truck if they get a call. Why don't you post picture of police vehicles when we are at WAWA or Chic-Fil-A? Yes I said WE.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the reason for the recent obsession with firemen out getting lunch?
ReplyDeleteReally, this is what you spend time on? How do you know what they are doing? They could be responding to a call or heaven forbid "eat". This type of scrutiny is uncalled for. It is not your job to babysit.
ReplyDeleteanonymous 9:19, Police Officers are ON THE ROAD 24-7 patrolling. They are also in vehicles that get a lot better gas mileage as well as vehicles that are manufactured to last with high mileage. Please do tell us a Fire vehicle, (like shown above) that has 150,000 miles on it.
ReplyDeleteAs for their taking their personal vehicle, we're NOT stupid here. You have plenty of chase vehicles, (MANY) sitting around that could be used to do just that.
I know, encourage MORE volunteers and let them make the run in a chase vehicle.
You will never convince me that it is necessary to take a Fire Truck or Ambulance to pick up food or grab some ice cream.
anonymous 9:14, Why do you feel the need to always threaten me. First of all, I didn't take the pictures. Secondly, read my message above. There are better ways to be far more fiscally responsible with taxpayer money. I personally feel there are times the SFD abuses the taxpayer.
If I had been elected it would have come to an end. Then again, so would have Salisbury News. I would have been far too busy running the City than have the time to run this Blog. So when you Firefighters come on here telling me this is why I lost the election, I laugh.
I'm still waiting for that over priced, worthless, Salisbury Fire Tub to show up dockside in Ocean City for happy hour, happy hours, and/or happy week/month at the beach for firemen. You can never be to early for those intoxicating fire parades. The trip around the horn of Plenty, Virginia would cost Salisbury less then a couple of hundred thousand dollars, well worth the cost for a pleasure trip. After all, what else have they got to do with their time, sleep, eat, play pool, ride around and burn gas?
Delete9:14--If you are a FF Very unprofessional to even suggest the FD would not respond just because they don't care for a persons opinion.
ReplyDeleteGo Joe!
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping a bottle rocket flies straight up you nose on the 4th of July.
ReplyDelete"You will never convince me that it is necessary to take a Fire Truck or Ambulance to pick up food or grab some ice cream. "
ReplyDeletePoint made.
It demonstrates that you don't understand the service operates. You can stop ranting about it now.
Or, you can man up and join Delmar VFC, and learn how it operates.
Ranting and raving about good practices will not make them 'evil' or make them stop.
For a Delaware blogger you sure pick on Maryalnd Firefighters a lot. Seems like the Delmar ambulance was your Delaware tax dollars at work.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteYeah and if I had had a sex change operation at 25 I'd be a female now. You did not win and I did not have an operation, so why waste time on what would have been been. You cannot truthfully state what you would have changed because you do not know rules, regs and mandates in the operations of fire departments ...or police departments or government. Please do not take this as a threat but if you are able to stop the fire company from picking up food using service vehicles. we all will have you to thank for very slow responses while waiting for responders to return to base to pick up equipment. So what if they have modern kitchens in which to cook. Food does not travel from the store to the kitchen by itself.
The fire truck at Wawa is from Station 2. That was not a paid department. The fire truck at TCBY is from 16. Now they are paid. Wismer needed his yogurt.
ReplyDelete9:14 you sound like a idiot. The tax payers own those vehicles. They should not be used for food delivery and for casual use. The tax payers also pay for the fuel to go in them also.If farmen want food use their own car to go get it.
ReplyDeleteThe only run SFD should be making is to the grocery store to stock up that beautiful commercial kitchen they have at the Taj Mahal of fire houses. Let them cook/prepare their own food, in house.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue on how the staffing goes, but how come the food isn't just picked up by one person using their personal vehicle and brought back? I can see if only 2 people are on duty and I can also see stopping on the way back from a call but all efforts should be made to avoid using the vehicles for trips not associated with their function.
ReplyDeleteIf you guys are so concerned about wasting diesel fuel why don't you start complaining about how much fuel is wasted by driving the ambulances all over the city for people who abuse the 911 system. Dozens and dozens times a week the ambulances are run around for people with back pain, drunk people, hurt fingers, stubbed toes, and the list goes on and on and on. These people don't need an ambulance but , " if I call an ambulance I can get seen right away in the ER." I would say that running these non emergency calls waste at least 5 times the fuel as any lunch run, and that's probably a conservative estimate.
ReplyDeleteOf course since you know everything (sarcasm) Albero; I'm sure you know that operators of these vehicles need to have logged hours of operation to remain certified to operate them? You did know that didn't you mister wizard? Why don't you get a life and attend to your wife so the FD & PD don't have to?
ReplyDeleteI can't understand why ANYONE doesn't see the difference this makes....its tax payer's money and all the BS about being ready for a call is just nonsense.
ReplyDeleteSame goes for cops... but you all don't care enough about that so why should you about this???????????????????
ReplyDeleteHow about we get some law passed that says NO govt employee or city employee can use state or city vehicles unless they are on duty...
anonymous 11:01, funny how your not man enough to use your name with such a personal attack. This is exactly why the majority of people dislike Firefighters. Instead of facing the TRUTH, you'd rather turn it into a personal attack.
ReplyDeleteLet me assure you of this. My Wife was single for many years, yet she chose me over all those Firefighters. My guess, she didn't want to get involved with someone who might compete for her femininity.
not rocket science they should buy them a smart car
ReplyDeleteFirefighters, you need to quit going on and on about how we, the public, just don't know your rules and regulations. What we do know is your are wasting taxpayers money and we don't like it one little bit. You are arrogant and irresponsible, period.

Second I doubt seriously any fire department would refuse to respond to the Albero residence.
I really wish I knew who you were because you would be history in the fire department.

No dumb a$$ bring you lunch like everyone else does. Quit whining for a pity party.
Joe please keep this at the top. There are many comments I would love to respond to. I hate searching for good local articles.
ReplyDeleteReally in poor taste to bash firefighters on a day when they have lost 19 of their brothers in Arizona. Fact is, firefighters deserve our respect and appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
ReplyDelete10:15
ReplyDeleteWhat?
anonymous 12:52, Did you know them by name? With all due respect, Two Police Officers also lost their lives yesterday in Ocean City, yet you neglect to make ANY mention of that tragic loss that close to home.
ReplyDeleteI just knew one of you jackasses would bring up those Firefighters, (real heros) lost yesterday. These were NOT men and women running around town buying ice cream and twinkies. It was a tragic loss and I pray for each one of them and their Families. Shall we pray none of you get hurt running errands in your fire toys too?
MILLION DOLLAR KITCHEN AT THE FIREHOUSE WHY ARE THEY OUT AND ABOUT?
ReplyDeleteBAM!
ReplyDeleteYou can find them at Rita's too.
ReplyDelete"Bring your lunch like everyone else does"? I didn't realize everyone except Firefighters and Police brought their lunch with them. It's amazing how we keep all of these businesses afloat all on our own.
ReplyDelete"How about we get some law passed that says NO govt employee or city employee can use state or city vehicles unless they are on duty" So, you think that these firefighters drive to the station on their days off and take the trucks out to get lunch. They are "on duty" you idiot.
I notice that the coward taking the pictures was not woman enough to get out of her car!
ReplyDeleteMust be scared.
anonymous 1:23, no more a COWARD who makes threats behind ANONYMOUS. You do know what rhymes with Wussy, don't you? Here's a hint, look in the mirror.
ReplyDeleteLET THE HOMELESS IN THE FIREHOUSE TO USE THE UNUSED KITCHEN?
ReplyDeleteThey have a huge opulent kitchen. The difference between police and fire is that the SPD officers are on patrol duty. Fire trucks and ambulances do not patrol. What a stupid argument. the fire equipment should stay at the fire house. Personnel should use their personal vehicles if they are getting a meal during a lunch or dinner break. If they are supposed to be at the station waiting for a call, then cook in that kitchen, call out, or bring your food with you.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, just maybe they take the vehicles so they are quicker to repsond to an emergency.
ReplyDeleteHave all the fun you want now Joseph Albero. Your time is coming. Things are going to go black very soon. Mark your calendar.
ReplyDeleteanonymous 2:04, "going black" eh? Who's going to kill me, you?
ReplyDelete2:04 you sound like a little punk. It is not right wasting tax dollars joy riding and picking up food we as tax payers have to pay to put the fuel in them. And as far as the salisbury fire department. I think they should be made into a volunteer company it is not like salisbury is the size of Baltimore. They spend alot of time sitting around getting paid to do nothing. Boy think about all the tax dollars we could be saving.
ReplyDelete2:04, what in the world is wrong with you? If you don't like the site...don't visit. If you want to debate...debate. Threats over free speech and sharing opinions, really? I guess only your views are allowed in your small world.

Report to WHO?
We are very close now. Just a couple more days. Things will right again very soon.
ReplyDeletei guess i am missing something? dont firemen get a lunch break to go do personal errands and eat? if so, why wouldnt they be in their own vehicle and not an ambulance or fire truck? if driving around doing errands was all part of the "rules and regulations" wouldn't the firemen just laugh this off instead of going ballistic and sending death threats?
ReplyDeleteThere is no lunch or dinner breaks on duty for a straight twenty four hour shift.
ReplyDelete5:35
ReplyDeleteNo one has said they don't deserve to eat a meal. What people are mad about is that fact that they think the gas that it takes to get them there is FREE! The tax payers are fed up with the waste. There is no reason to take out the FD vehicle to get your lunch. Take your own vehicle. Not everyone goes to lunch at the same time anywhere else why do you think you should be special. You take turns at going to lunch or ONE person takes a smaller vehicle out to pick up the lunch or have it delivered. Most people have to pack their own lunch because they can't even afford to go out to lunch and you think it's ok to waste gas in a big vehicle that the TAX payers are paying for.
4:27 - yes if they are fighting a fire or on their way to a fire or on the way to the hospital while performing life saving procedures or pulling people from a five car prle up, all firemen and EMT stop evevy thing and go eat. Think real, not stupid
ReplyDelete3:55 PM how right you are

ReplyDeleteI don't blame them , I do blame the supervisors for this stupid waste of money.

We don't need paid firemen , we do need medical attention. Fire them all!

WRONG! The Delmar Ambulance gets plenty of funds from Maryland and Wicomico County as well as Maryland patients.
Yesterday, 19 real firefighters lost their lives trying to serve and protect others. The focus of this day should have been a respectful tribute to them, and the families they've unwillingly left behind, not this thread of trival nonsense.
ReplyDelete*** sorry if this posts twice, there was an error***
ReplyDeleteFirefighters, EMS and police officers risk their lives and safety everyday. Sometimes they may be able to eat at their station, and sometimes they can't. I have packed many breakfasts, lunch and dinners only to have most of it returned after the shift because they were so backed up with calls to eat. Sometimes they have no choice but to eat out. We pack to save $ and to save calories but sometimes it doesn't always work that way. If you complainers are suggesting that they have a cushy job then I suggest you get into that profession. Then your wife, husband, parents and children can worry about your safety, wonder if the knock on the door or the ringing of the phone is bad news. Let your husband come home and tell you he had a gun pulled on him. Let him come home sobbing because of the young life that was lost and there wasn't anything they could do, hear him have nightmares of the body he helped pull out of the river. Once you have experienced all of that, then you may complain about where they ate lunch. There are more important things to concern yourselves with.

That is correct Rescue 2 was hijacked from the Station 2 volunteers and turned into Rescue 16. It is now quartered at Station 16 due to corrupt paid fire chiefs. Hoppes is just as correct.

They should stop on the way back from a call to get food? What if they don't get a call? Then they have to go out anyway to buy food. Here is a novel idea. Bring it from home. Buy the food on your personal time just like most employees have to do.

Nice diversion tactic. We aren't talking about citizens abusing 911 we are talking about paid firemen abusing tax dollars by running all over the city doing their shopping. This is something we can control. This is stealing from the tax payers and it needs to stop. Fire the abusers including the new fat fire chief for allowing it to happen.

I agree with you on this one as well. There aren't enough fire calls to justify a paid fire department. Those resources should be funneled into a fully staffed EMS department and let the volunteers run the few fire calls there are. Why do you think there is a fire truck on every ambulance call? It's called Job Security! It needs to stop and stop now.
Sorry the firefighters are not that busy in Salisbury. At least not with fires. Most of the calls I hear are to assist the Paramedics with lifting.
ReplyDeleteIf they need to log so many hours on the fire trucks have them do it when returning to the fire house after a call or do they not get enough calls to get their hours in?
Just remember it is the tax payers money that is going to providing the fund for the fire department. Much of the waste is no different than the person on welfare that abuses tax payer money.

Dude! You have watched Backdraft and Ladder 49 to many times. Get over yourself and come to reality. When has a Salisbury Fireman gone all day without eating because he was backed up on calls? I will tell you because it's not hard to figure out. NONE!! Get over yourself you wannabes never fight fire and never put your lives on the line every single day. You boys are living in La La Land because that only happens in the movies.
People have to eat. Doesn't matter if they are police officers or FFs. All of these people do protect us.
ReplyDeleteLets give people the respect they deserve. In the old days cops and firefighters were people we looked up to because they had a noble job which hasn't changed. Now we have video games where you can beat the police. That's great for society and look what we have become. A sad existence of a once great nation.
When someone's house is on fire or their father has a heart attack they call the fire dept. If someone is breaking into their house at 3am they call the police.
These are jobs that many of us would rather not do yet we can cast stones from our greenhouses. Most of us would rather not deal with a bloody person or a person that is vomiting all over them or run toward gunfire or deal with being called names by someone on welfare or deal with someone shot in the lung bleeding all over them.
Let them eat and lets have some respect for people that protect us from true danger and rush to our aid in a crisis.
I doubt very seriously if any of our houses are on fire, our family is gasping for breath, someone is breaking into our house, or has just stabbed us we are going to care about where the person coming to our aid got lunch in a personal vehicle.
These people have to deal with hell on a daily basis that would make most of us vomit and quit. So while we mill about in our daily grind, give thanks to those who dedicate their lives in protecting the people.
If the public really knew how much the paid firefighters weren't needed they would be gone tomorrow. Smoke and mirrors. Jim Ireton knows they aren't needed, but keeps them on anyway. He is the first one that needs to go.
ReplyDeleteoff topic but have you heard the city of salisbury annexed the area east of the stadium where those businesses are, including John Deere? The city just robbed more people of tax money.
ReplyDeleteAll fire dept. waste money , Westside takes their vehicles to the gas station or the store to get coffee or a snack.
ReplyDeleteThey also do some shopping while in the city with the aux. van.
I eat ice cream. I don't have the money to go out to a TCBY store, and don't eat it when I'm at work, because it's at home in my freezer. I put it there after my Saturday grocery shopping trip and it's there during the week for me to get a portion when I have down time.
ReplyDeleteIs this a concept impossible for a farmin to understand?
So go all volunteer, what happens when it is the middle of the day and they are at work or just not enough show up to get a piece of equipment out? The "paid crew" is an insurance policy. There also has been plenty of times on night and weekends when the volunteers have scratched calls and the "paid crew" had to cover the call so the "tax payers" in that area had coverage. This is why the volunteers at station two asked for a "paid crew" back in their station after not having one for almost two years. That and they wanted janitors. It becomes harder every year for volunteers due to training regulations handed down by state and federal regulations. Also volunteers cost the city with yearly physicals and the retirement they get once vested after ten years. The "paid fire crew" by the way is also your "paid ems crew" they are crossed train to do both.
ReplyDelete12:05 You depict the exact attitude the public is trying to highlight. Just because you are a fire fighter or a medic, a career you chose, doesn't give you a license to waste tax payer's money. The days of hiding behind, "the job we do" allows us free range to be wastefull, is over. Welcome to the new economy. The fire service is one of the last services that allow employees to sleep on the job. Does that make sense to the taxpayer?
ReplyDeleteAll the angry backlashes are just that, the best defense is a good offense. Our tax dollars and the budget doesn't need to be used for food runs etc. THEY ARE UNNECSSARY USE OF GAS AND USE OF EQUIPMENT, AND PERSONNEL. a car would have taken care of the order, and the FIRE VEHICLES WOULD BE USED FOR WHAT THERE PURPOSE IS!
ReplyDeleteBoo hoo they are getting lunch. You people are testicles.
ReplyDeleteQuit crying, bitching, and moaning. There is much more in life and government waste to get upset about then some ffs getting lunch.

Grow a pair or call 911 to complain that your neighbors dog shit on your yard and have a medic come out and wash the sand out of your sensitive fe man parts. While you're at it grab some pamprin and a few tampons.

Are you that stupid to think this topic is about the paid fireman not getting the chance to eat? What part of bring your lunch or dinner from home? These clowns drive to Wawa every single day to get free coffee and sodas. They go to Wawa and buy their breakfast sandwiches as well.
When someone's father has a heart attack they call 911 not the fire department. It's unfortunate that EMS is in the fire departments, but they need the ambulance billing for their spending needs like shiny new fire trucks.

Seriously what's your obsession? What would you rather them do?
ReplyDeleteAmusing to observe your weekly obsession with the firefighters choices of where to get something to eat. They have never failed to answer the call for help and they do a good job. Um... here is a novel idea. Stay at the fire stations and wait for a fire like they are paid to do.

Prove it!!
By the way you don't pay Salisbury City taxes.
Rick Hoppes should be fired for allowing this to continue to happen. This has been exposed numerous times and he refuses to do anything about it.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see this back at the top and go over 100 comments. I bet it can get 200 comments.
ReplyDeletePublic Employees, Jimmy, Rick, and the rest of the political class,
ReplyDeleteYOU NO LONGER HAVE THE TRUST OF THE PEOPLE PAYING THE BILLS!
You spend a million dollars on a fire boat with staff that might never be used, you cannot find a fire chief without getting personal, you fix the budget a hundred different ways because you need the money for the "children", etc.
Now live with the fact that "Perception is Reality",
You created this shit sandwich, now eat it!
Salisbury firefighters have always had great reputations for several things and they deserve credit for them:
ReplyDelete1. Supporting local fast/junk food establishments
2. Supporting the free flow of liquor in the city/county
3. Supporting local attorneys with divorces, DUI's, paternity cases, criminal charges etc.
4. Keeping taxpayers in Salisbury poor because of outrageous taxes to pay for toys and places to keep them.
5. Local dentist are kept busy as several of the good old boys can afford those teeth they dreamed about getting so that their families could be proud.
6. Judging by the fires already extinguished by the stellar crews of Fireboat 1 and know doubt the practice it takes riding around the regions waterways to be able to navigate the perilous Wicomico. All this keeps marine mechanics and Gordy Fuel delivery teams busy.
As you can see the list can keep going and encourage others here to do just that add to this list since it's just a start!
Wasted tax dollars... do you get to eat, yes. What happened to the days when we went to the store in one (usually pick-up or brush truck) and brought food back to the station? On Saturday night there were 3 pieces of equipment in front of the strip mall next to the college... firemen sitting at Rolly Polly eating... yes, 3 pieces of equipment, not just one. I can appreciate that you want to be ready to respond, and yews you have a right to eat, but what you are doing is an abuse of your positions and in my day, this would never have been permitted and should not be today. Do the right thing and stop wasting our tax dollars. In Maryland we are seeing enough of our hard earned money wasted by government.
ReplyDeleteJuly 1, 10:22, I'm under the impression that this conversation is about the "waste" of tax dollars. Now do you want to talk about the major source of real waste, or talk about someone eating lunch. For those of you who think that the volunteers could run a fully functioning fire department, you are sadly mistaken. There are some truly dedicated and committed volunteers but the majority of them lack serious training and most importantly maturity and common sense.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion
ReplyDeleteIt appears a few are making mockery of any citizen who chooses to disagree with people who state that the firemen are doing a good job (farmin as these critics says because they either do not know how to spell, like in uneducated, or think this posting is about farmers, again like uneducated).
Firemen be proud and keep on laughing at these fools who do not know crap about rules, regs and manidates. Don't you just love it when the "know it alls" in their drug induced or drunken stupors get on here typing away their asinine thoughts?
The paid fire crew at the fire palace just tried to squirrel another call from the volunteers at Station 2. This has got to stop.

You must be a paid fireman because you are bashing the volunteers. How do you define a fully functional fire department? When was the last time that the Salisbury Fire Department actually tried to recruit volunteers? They haven't? Why you ask? Because people like you feel threatened by volunteers and that is a lie saying many of them are immature and lack training. If they lacked the required training then they wouldn't be a firefighter. You Sir need to find another job.
If the tax payers of the City of Salisbury want to bitch, they should inquire of the council why only 1/3 of the city is covered by a by a "PAID" fire crew 24 hrs a day. Station 1 (Beaglin Park Dr) is only on duty till 7:00pm M-F. Station 2 is on duty till 5:30pm M-F. So 2/3 of the city must depend on "VOLUNTEERS" to man the equipment after these hours and weekends. The Wicomico Fire Service has 8 minutes to respond before the next station is alerted. (Including the City of Salisbury) the fire crews at station 16(your fire palace) will normally respond on their own ONLY in the other parts of the city if the volunteer station will have to be re-alerted to respond. I don't know about the rest of you but I'd be thankful to have someone get to my house as quickly as possible. It makes no sense for a paid crew to sit in the station and listen to the other two stations being re-alerted. That's why they (go on their own). Having a FULL fire crew at the ready is surely a small price to pay for a quick response. This is one reason why if one wants to go somewhere for food they all go together. There have been countless times that they are interrupted standing in line to get food because they were dispatched to a call.
ReplyDeleteRee 10:57 AM the paid firemen of Salisbury are a mockery of real firefighters and most of them have been scraped from the bottom of the barrel. One commenter stated the volunteers were untrained and uneducated and that is far from the truth. Why didn't you attack that paid fireman for bashing the volunteer firefighters.
ReplyDeleteAll the surrounding areas/towns don't have paid fire fighters and they make out fine. Salisbury is much larger than any of the surrounding towns so why aren't they able to get enough volunteers to cover the calls? Most of the calls I hear are for the fire fighters to help the paramedics with lifting. Maybe they need stronger paramedics.
ReplyDeleteThe real issue is whether using a city vehicle for gopher projects is justified, and under what circumstances.
ReplyDeleteThe view of normal, tax paying citizens is that it should happen infrequently, perhaps only after an emergency disrupted a meal at the station.
Good managers, even in public service, are expected to manage and that includes ensuring that the pennies get squeezed. Routinely using the trucks for a modified form of progressive dinner (lunch) does not meet the smell test.
If they have this much free time perhaps they could be subbed out to deliver pizzas or hoagies; that would get them to the food legitimately and their tips could defray the fuel and maintenance.
Sarcasm switch now OFF.

Another paid farmin using scare tactics to justify his job. This subject is not lame and stupid. Paying clowns like you is stealing out of my pockets. Let the volunteers handle all the fire calls and the paramedics handle all the EMS calls. Quit hating on volunteers because you feel threatened.

July 7, 2013 at 2:04 PM
David you bring up some good points. Why is there a 24 hour paid crew at the Station 16 the Fire Palace? Isn't it true that Station 16 was moved to Cypress Street because the leadership knew the original volunteers wouldn't be able to drive that far. Isn't it also true that the leadership knew that they wouldn't be able to get volunteer from the black community? Isn't it true that the leadership has never ever made an attempt to recruit volunteers from the Cypress Street community because they are black? Isn't it true that Station 16 is locked down tight because they don't want anyone from the Cypress Street community to just walk in? It wasn't like that at the old fire station?
Why is it that there is a paid crew at Station 1 until 7 pm? Don't most volunteers get off work around 4:30pm?
You mentioned that the volunteer stations all over the county have an 8 minute re-alert policy. If the volunteers in Salisbury don't get out in 8 minutes the paid firemen take it upon themselves to respond to their calls. Why doesn't the paid crew respond to Fruitland, Parsonsburg, Delmar, Hebron and other stations if they get re-alerted? Why is it just Salisbury?
You mentioned that there have been countless times that all the paid crews have been left standing in line because they have been dispatched for calls. That is the crux of this entire post. They shouldn't be in one place at one time. You can't tell me that the paramedic crew from Station 1 sitting at Roly Poly eating can respond quickly to a medical emergency at the Shorebirds Stadium.
Your job justification just does not cut it. You have made a complete fool of yourself.
anonymous 12:49, What you say is true. I have to admit, when I was given the honor to enter a burning building to help put the fire out, it was truly frightening and educational.
ReplyDeleteHowever, my purpose for this Post was NOT to challenge Firefighters and or their courage and professionalism IN A FIRE.
The purpose was to educate the public in what is obvious and abuse of our equipment and manpower to go buy Twinkies, (so to speak).
While many Firefighters may not like the fact that Salisbury News exposes this particular situation, clearly our viewers have proven through thousands of comments over the years that they agree that Firefighters should use either a chase vehicle and or a personal vehicle to purchase food and other items.
If it takes several more years of exposure because you refuse to respect the taxpayers wishes, well, we'll just continue to publish it until legislation is changed or even worse, the public sees how disrespectful Salisbury Firefighters are to the taxpayers and the public cuts off any more donations.
You see, there is a court of public opinion now and you better get used to it. Your arrogance will be the demise of such fundraising over time, if it hasn't already created an impact so far.
If you were to sit on the outside, if you were to look at other, (especially volunteer departments) you'd see this is NOT normal behavior.
in the end you can bash us for disagreeing or you can change your ways. I personally think the public will win on this one over time. You have no solid argument as to why you feel this need to use our equipment and resources. When I see a truck at a WaWa where everyone is covered with black smoke and crud all over your uniforms I'll be the first to have your back. Unfortunately at 51 years old I can't recall EVER seeing that situation. Think about that for a while.

This is a great point. The reason the Salisbury Fire Department doesn't have more volunteers is because the leadership limits the number of volunteers. The leadership also doesn't do anything to recruit volunteers either. It can be done with the right leadership, but the Mayor and council is to stupid to understand that concept. All they know is FREE, FREE, FREE. Guess what, volunteers are just as free.

This is the reason that the City of Salisbury should clean house at the Salisbury Fire Department starting at the top.
There is no reason a paid fireman should be using scare tactics to justify their jobs. There is no reason that paid firemen should be calling the tax payers who pay their salaries dirt balls. There is no way in the world that a paid fireman should be calling tax payers "entitled idiots."
This is very frightening to know that if I ever have the need to call 911 that one of these vile maniacs will show up at my door.
The bottom line when you think about it is that the majority of paid firemen are the "entitled idiots."
Ok Joe, then lets stop using fire equipment for ALL parades, controlled burnings(training), ambulance stand-by at youth football games, fire truck rides for kids, funerals for the fallen and on and on and on and........Really no difference is there???
ReplyDeleteTha ambulance is their office.. Would u like to call ambulance and they need to run back to station to get ambulance..
ReplyDeleteJoe.. You are welcome to come volunteer at your local fire department anytime. Otherwise.. Hope u never need them
ReplyDeleteJoe, for the love of God you were in the training center at UMES but make it sound as if you were called to the World Trade Center fighting the fire. Amazing how you loved them farmin when they let you in the loop but now write or post nasty comments because Hoppes won't jump through hoops for you. The ambulance is not their office, but the issue is with the fire trucks and full fire crews not the EMS personnel. Good try though.
WOW! I'm amazed as some of the recent comments, or should I say, threats?
ReplyDeleteanonymous 3:40, Lets do just that. Are you suggesting a parade isn't a parade without FIRE TRUCKS or Firefighters? That's a pretty sweled up head you have on those shoulders.
No, I'd say it's more like, LOOK AT MEEEEE!
I have to agree with the other comment challenging you the last time a Firefighter died in a fire in Salisbury.
Let me turn it around even further. Do YOU believe Fire Trucks should also be used to fill local and personal SWIMMING POOLS? The Fire Departments, (in some cases) HURT local businesses by doing just that for a DONATION. However, now they only do so for MEMBERS of the Fire Department, still hurting those businesses who are in the business of selling that water.
That being said, your regular Joe can't get water from a Fire Department any longer because it was WRONG in the first place. Kinda like running to WaWa for a Twinkie, wouldn't you agree??????
Anonymous 5:25, First of all, you are CLUELESS. I was NEVER in a training center at UMES, you just made that up.
I see, so IF someone disagrees and or exposes a Firefighter for running equipment to get treats/food or whatever, they are stabbing them in the back.
Am I to stop and ask you to pleeeeeeeease like me, pleeeeeeease be my friend because Firefighters are the bestest kind of friends to have, especially when they know your not home but your Wife is. I think NOT. I've seen and heard enough about many of you crybaby jackasses and I'll keep my close friends, thank you very much.
As for how many lives I've saved, allow me to respond to you with this. I've SAVED hundreds, (if not thousands) of animals lives together with my beautiful Bride. I've reunited hundreds of pets with their owners. If I was ever needed and or in the position to save a life, (any life) I would do so in a heart beat because that is who I am and what I'm all about. I've helped feed the hungry and homeless and I've donated tens of thousands of dollars to help others in need.
I own a Blog, not a Fire Station that is expected to risk lives to save lives but I'll say I do my fair share every day of the week, not 3 days a week.
So big fella, do tell everyone reading this Blog just how many lives YOU have saved. My guess, ZERO. A REAL Firefighter, a real professional wouldn't feel the need to brag about what he/she does. Therefore I already know, your a liar and a wanna be.
I swear I have not witnessed such a disfunctional group of people as Salisbury's fire stations in all of my life.
ReplyDeleteLook at the shear number of comments. This organization looks to be so out of shape that only General George Patton style management is the only type individual that can inject some respect into an otherwise disrespectful organization. What an embarassment for the people of Salisbury. Every one of the firefighters should be ashamed of yourselves for splurging so lavishly on the taxpayers dime.
I respect police and emergency personnel as well as firefighters but ......there are many places that deliver food or maybe you could pack your dinner, have your significant other or friend bring you something or take something with you and cook at the firehouse. I think Mr Hoppes needs to realize there were alot of people skeptical of him being chief and now that he is, he needs to take control of his crew and stop wasting taxpayer dollars by allowing these pieces of equipment to be driven all over salisbury. They are for emergencies and only emergencies.

The biggest problem with the Salisbury Fire Department is the leadership. The problem starts with Jim Ireton appointing him after he originally denied him. This appointment of Rick Hoppes started during the time Jim Ireton was in attack mode with Debbie Campbell and the council majority.
Second Rick Hoppes was never credentialed or deserving of the position. He is and has always been a lazy fireman. He never sat for any promotional exam. His motive was kissing up to the chief at the time until he made it to the top by appointment for each position by the fire chief. The hard work he did was trying to get out of work.
He is so lazy that he never gets out of his office unless it is to get something to eat. He doesn't bring his lunch either so he has to drive his new Ford Explorer to go get lunch. He also meets his wife for lunch and does his shopping with her while he is out.
He is to lazy to visit he stations and the members on duty every day. No one is really running that department. It is true Hoppes has to go.
Well Joe. Let me fill you in on the truth. The fire department is running just fine with none of the wild stories of total turmoil that you report. I find it interesting that your are able to report on issues that you have no first hand knowledge of. You never step foot in any of Salisbury's firehouses or interact with any credible members. We are doing just fine. Two things to remember. Your not the Mayor and have no control of City issues. The election made that point very clear. Second; your not the Fire Chief and have no say in any fire department matters or policies. Rick Hoppes has the credentials and is here to stay as Chief. Now if you like being the proverbial "Dog Chasing His Tale" then just go ahead. I thought you were smarter than that, but I guess I was wrong.
ReplyDeleteanonymous 9:51, let's get a few things straight here.
ReplyDeleteNumber one, saying I have never set foot in the building is simply a load of crap. I have been there numerous times.
Secondly, I simply published photos of the obvious, sent in to me from reliable sources.
You seem to comment as if all of the comments made here are my own words, that's ridiculous. Your pointing the finger and blame on me while the ONLY comments I have made have my name on them.
I think Rick Hoppes is a nice guy. Do I agree that his degree is legit, well, perhaps but it is an on line degree, which has been challenged in the past by the federal government. It seems to be CONVENIENT for some when they WANT someone and again CONVENIENT for the very same people when they want to RID of someone.
I have been very open about how I personally feel about Firefighters using MY equipment that I pay for. Some have made a VERY good point here by mentioning the MAJORITY of Firefighters don't even live in the City and pay taxes in the City. Yet they abuse OUR vehicles, OUR gas for personal use.
If you don't like me or disagree with me because I happen to feel that way, so be it. We simply disagree. So are you saying I'm STUPID because I feel the way I do?????
Actually Joe I believe your an intelligent man. I just believe your wasting your time on a situation that isn't going to change. Your making an issue over nothing. The guys have got to eat. Negative thoughts seem to dominate your agenda. Your energy would better spent on finding something positive about the firefighters and the City as a whole. Your formula is simply not working. These firefighters give everything they have and then some to keep us safe and do a great job. Its easier to catch a bear with honey than vinegar. Try it some time.
ReplyDeleteanonymous 9:51, you certainly have the right to your own opinion, I respect that. However, considering the traffic I get every single day on Salisbury News, you stick to what your doing and I'll stick to what I'm doing. You say I'm making an issue over nothing, clearly your involved in the Fire Department. I do find positive things to say about the Fire Department. You just seem to remember the opposite things related to your own opinion. As far as keeping us safe, seriously???? I might agree when it comes to the Police but seriously, the Fire Department keeps us safe? Would you mind explaining that, or are you one of those, (since I'm a Firefighter my Brothers served in the World Trade Center) kind of guys? Those Firefighters take everything WE HAVE/OWN and then some whenever they're out buying Twinkies, period.
ReplyDelete
