Retire Here, Not There: Maryland

Nearly 100 years ago, a reporter for National Geographic nicknamed Maryland “America in Miniature” because of its varied landscape, and to this day the name has stuck. You can ski in the mountains in the west, sail on the Atlantic Ocean in the east and hike through lush, creek-lined rolling hills in the middle of the state. “One of the big pluses of retiring here is that geographically we’re a very diverse state,” says Susan Fulton, a certified financial planner and founder of FBB Capital Partners in Bethesda.

Though Maryland is one of the smallest states in the nation, those seeking to retire near water have more options here than in many other states.

Maryland touches three major bodies of water—the Chesapeake Bay, the Potomac River estuary and Atlantic Ocean—and the state boasts roughly 4,000 miles of shoreline, 400 lakes and dozens of rivers and creeks. For retirees, this means easy access to activities ranging from fly-fishing and boating to kayaking and canoeing.

  4. You are both incorrect, 3:41 and 4:17. They will tax you even AFTER you die. And then they will tax whatever you pass on to your heirs.

  5. You won't enjoy retirement in MD because of the governor's policies in taxing and adding on fees. Your retirement dollars will not go far here. Better to move on to more friendly states that have better governor's than MD.

  6. Yet people still retire here. It must be something more important than money...

But you folks wouldn't know anything about that here.

  7. There is one other major flaw in this article. Maryland has no natural lakes at all. There are many reservoirs, but no lakes.
