Man Seriously Injured In Head-On Collision On Chesapeake Bay Bridge

SANDY POINT, Md. —A head-on crash shut down a portion of the westbound Chesapeake Bay Bridge Monday afternoon.

A pickup truck carrying a trailer and a minivan collided shortly after 4 p.m. Anne Arundel County fire officials said one man who suffered life-threatening injuries was flown to Shock Trauma.

A second person was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The collision shut down the westbound span, and a disabled car blocked one lane on the eastbound span, resulting in only one lane getting by.

  1. Shut down the whole bridge. Keep it closed. Show proof you can drive before being allowed to cross.

  2. We missed it just by an hour. I believe the reason we were directed to the Westbound span is because the Transit Authority Police was reenacting the crash from Friday night that sent the car overboard.

  3. This will not stop until they stop two way traffic on the spans...... each span should be one way only at all times

  4. Clearly another collision that could have been avoided by not allowing two way traffic on one bridge. No other roadway in Maryland has this type of traffic pattern witch such tight lane tolerances. Heck Rt. 90 to Ocean City got Barriers after only a couple of crashes. But yet we are to believe the tenders of the bridge that two way traffic was not the reason for the accident. We need another bridge. During peak hours use two spans for one direction and the third for the other. Also what moronic law enforcement agency tries to and is allowed to close a major traffic roadway during peak hours for traffic reconstruction. Do that during the night time hours. Oh I forgot, the MTA reconstructionist work M-F 8-4.

  7. When the bridge has two way traffic there should be a speed limit of 15 mph!

  10. It's not the bridges, it's not the intersections, it's not the roadways. It's the DRIVERS.

I am quite sure everyone reading this knows what I am talking about. I am equally sure everyone reading this has seen idiots PRETENDING to drive.

You are not a skillful driver speeding and weaving through traffic to get a car length or two ahead of where you were.

You are not a skillful driver blocking someone from merging so you will get ahead of them.

You are not a skillful driver by impeding the flow of traffic so the vehicle behind you cannot go by you. It is not your job to try to influence the speed of ANYONE other than yourself.

You are not a skillful driver who sees an opening in between vehicles and jumps into it. If you change lanes or enter a lane of traffic and the person you pulled in front of has to hit their brakes, you did not do it correctly.

Any maneuver you may do should NOT affect anyone else on the roadway.

Get your speed up to the flow of traffic BEFORE you enter the traffic.

You are not a skillful driver who blows by everyone in the left lane and at the last minute whips to the right to get off an exit.

I could go on and on. I don't care how fast you go, how many cars you pass, you will NEVER get ahead of anyone else by more than a minute or two. You may be a mile ahead of the last car you passed, but so what?

After a couple of red lights the same vehicle will be right behind you again.

Keep your hands on the steering wheel, your eyes on the road, READ and OBEY roads signs. Don't look all around like you are on a sightseeing tour, unless you are a passenger. If you talk to someone in your car, you do not have to look at them to do so.

I won't even mention cell phones.

EVERY collision can be avoided. Driver error, inattention, distracted driving, lack of skills, ignorance of the rules of the road, aggressive driving, road rage, all these and more cause collisions.

I say collisions because there is no such thing as accidents. It is one or more of the above infractions that cause collisions.

Start a trend. Be courteous. Chances are people will be courteous back. That leads to a safer, less stressful, more rested and more enjoyable trip.

  11. I agree that most collisions are not "accidents", but keep in mind that some are due to a driver with a medical condition...even a person with no known cardiac history can unexpectedly go into full arrest..someone could have a Grand Mal seizure with no known neurological issues. Also, they do not need to stop doing two way traffic. You say that until you have to sit in hours and hours of traffic due to tourists wanting to get to the beach. The Thomas Johnson Bridge is Solomon's Island is fairly tall..maybe 50 feet shorter than the tallest point of the bay bridge...but it is all jersey wall. Many of accidents have occurred there (I cannot recall anyone going over the side), but O'Malley Land sure isn't going to build another bridge to allow more lanes for the 30,000 people that commute over it everyday. One lane for each way. All they are getting is wider lanes prior to the bridge..woohoo.

  13. Uh, 10:41, You are out in outer space with this. If all wrecks were registered as "medical maladies", then there would me .0001% of the wrecks to date. Are you cerial? Accidents are caused by idiots, not heart attacks!

It still would be preventable. Regardless, we are talking about the majority, not some rare instance.
