Mayor James Ireton, Jr. informs the public today that the City of Salisbury’s Buildings, Permits and Inspections department has not issued a Rt. 13 business a permit to erect “Red Light District” signage. The department will not issue the sign permit request to B & Z Investments, owners of 521 N. Salisbury Blvd., because the determination of whether or not the establishment is an “Adult Retail Store” has not been reached. Information and documentation necessary to determine the use of the building, and hence the sign request, will have to be provided by the establishment.
“The use of the building has a huge impact on the quality of life on the Rt. 13 commercial corridor, the surrounding neighborhoods and places of worship. The City has a responsibility to make Salisbury a safer place. “Red Light District,” and the conduct it implies world-wide, is not acceptable or lawful in this location. All of the efforts of the City to end the human trafficking and prostitution at the Thrift Travel Inn have led to a safer business corridor and less crime in the surrounding neighborhoods. City officials have a long way to go before determining the use of this building and granting a sign request,” said Mayor Ireton.
Finally something the mayor has done right!
ReplyDelete"huge impact on the quality of life on the Rt. 13 commercial corridor, the surrounding neighborhoods"
ReplyDeleteMayor please! This is the ugliest part of Salisbury, certainly isn't going to detract from that!
what a joke, a few feet away is a damn porno store and he is worried about this? what a joke...
ReplyDeleteHe just wants no jobs in sby is all... except govt jobs
dittos 1:19
ReplyDeleteAnd have you been to the Center at Sby? Spenser's is 25% dildos. And sex toys.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 1:19 and 1:22 PM.
ReplyDeleteIf gay was included in the wordage the city would have approved it.
ReplyDelete"Red light district" could include normal sex.
well if this is the third location to open in salisbury they must be doing some pretty good business. id rather it be in that location than downtown plaza or twilley center.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Superstorm?
ReplyDeleteThat offends me.
Think of all the people that died in Katrina and Sandy.
(sarc) Hope this illustrates the irony...
Apparently this is one of the few types of businesses that can do well in Salisbury, kind of emphasizes the sorry state of affairs here.

HUH??
"All of the efforts of the City to end the human trafficking and prostitution at the Thrift Travel Inn have led to a safer business corridor and less crime in the surrounding neighborhoods."
ReplyDeleteThat's a big lie. Jim Ireton is always sending out a press release to make him look good. The crime has not gone down in this city Mr. Liarton!
The other stores are grandfathered because they were in place prior to the legislation being passed. Ugly? Who cares. Alot of property owners are stepping up trying to improve this area and this business won't help. Look what E. S. Adkins has done to their site. Its a huge improvement and just a few blocks from this mess. Some people care about this corridor.
ReplyDeleteWhat next Kmarts Blue Light Special?

Hmm! I wonder who this is?
Hey, tear down a few buildings, and all of a sudden, you have an "improved society" somewhere?
ReplyDeleteI disagree. All you have is a couple of empty lots.
Maybe I'm wrong?

I agree. Crime is not down. Prostitution is not down. It just moved across the street to that other flea bag motel.
You would think a thriving business would lead to money coming into the area. Taxes being paid, money being made. Why so against money?
ReplyDeleteAnd i dont see an obscene word on that sign... Theres one on the way to Ocean City and there is no obscenities in their windows either.
So where is an acceptable location for an adult novelty shop in Salisbury?
ReplyDeleteporn shop down the street certainly adds to the surrounding. why was it allowed? right after the overpass, that's the first thing you see. what an impression.also, isn't this really the red light district?
ReplyDelete11:09
ReplyDeleteNowhere is acceptable! These businesses should be warehoused & mail order only. They have no place in towns.
This is just political posturing. As soon as that shop opens its doors, Jim will probably be its first customer, buying the biggest "toy" they have for sale.
ReplyDelete5:15 Well let's get rid of coffee shops, since you should have a coffee maker at home anyway. Oh, and let's get rid of all clothing stores, because you can buy a machine and material to make your own. Oh yeah, get rid of grocery stores, because you can live of your land, right?
ReplyDeleteIt's a business, one that may not cater to your ilk, but serves a purpose to a group, even a generation (or 4), of people.
YOU may not agree with someone needing this business, but you have no right (nor does the city) to decide where the next guy/gal shops!!!!
I like how everyone here preaches capitalism this, capitalism that... that is of course unless it conflicts with your personal views.
ReplyDeleteYou people are ridiculous.
There is a market for it, it is not harmful or illegal, so let them sell what they want.
Pretentious hypocrites. Get a life.
ditto 11:36AM
ReplyDeleteRestaurants come and go and these stores never seem to go out of business. Guess they are filling a business need.
ReplyDeleteThe one south of the hospital has been there for 23 years we should probably be giving them some sort of business award.
