damn. Everyone is high rolling in OC. No wonder the place costs so much to vacation. I stopped going years ago because I could spend the same amount of money and get a better place to stay and tons more to do in Myrtle Beach.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't look like they are hurting for business....can't hardly get across the bridge most summer days.
Deletethey have a high rate of retention, nobody leaves and they max out on the salary scale. it is a good place to work, with a lot less headaches than Salisbury, Wicomico or the State.
ReplyDeleteOMG! These salaries are incredible - I wonder how the compare on a national level - I agree Ocean City is an expensive place to vacation and live for the average person. WOW!
ReplyDeleteThat is off the charts! Wow, a head of a dept. and an asst. combined at over $200,000...gotta be kidding
ReplyDeleteThat is why I go to the Outer Banks. Free parking everywhere. Beautiful clean beaches. You can have a beer on the beach and not worry about cops harrasing and fining you.
ReplyDeleteOkay so if there is no Golf Course in the city limits, what does the Golf Superintendent do? Manage mini-golf courses!?
ReplyDeleteWhere would you find the Wicomico County's version of this ?
ReplyDeleteYou would laugh....I have worked there 18 years and make $32,000. Less 150 a month for pension and $ 350 for insurance. Plus getting to read comments from a bunch of cluless people that think we have it so good. BTW...all the money I make gets spent in this county supporting local business.furloughs for 5 years while the teachers continued to get raises and then hear crap over the possibility of a measley 1.7 percent raise this year. Just let me try to support my family without the constant stereotype comments that are untrue.
DeleteWorst part, they all just got a raise! AND, no end in sight.
ReplyDeleteDennis started this entire mess with combined COLA and steps in the same years. Now he's back. Hows it working for ya folks?
ReplyDeletetown owns EAGLES LANDING< thats why golf course guy is in there.
ReplyDeletecost a lot of money in taxes, city, county and so on to live there people, (im a salisbury resident),
I can see why the salaries are that high. they really ought to raise LAND taxes instead of parking, parking is just a bigger headaches, and the land taxes would get passed along to the Baltimore morons more-so than the few who actually live there.
True, there is no golf course within city limits but the City owns Eagles Landing Golf Course. Technically, it's on land owned by the airport but Ocean City owns the airport, too.
ReplyDeleteI can see some justification for the golf course superintendent's salary because he maintains a top-rated course in top condition and it brings in millions of dollars in revenue every year. It is the only department of city government that always shows a profit, and a big one, at that.
If you bother to do the research you will find that they are mid to lower range of comparable municipalities with similar tax base.
ReplyDeleteOC would descend into drunken anarchy within 24 hours without all these 100k/yr hotshot police.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell. I've worked for Wicomico County for 25 years and my salary is no where near those salaries. What the hell.
ReplyDeleteGood for them and good for Ocean City being able to pay decent wages to their workers.
ReplyDeleteI have warned people time and time again on this blog to stay out of OC. If you have any teenage daughters or sons - please inform them to stay away from OC. They - (government regulators at all levels) - will have their hand in you hip pocket so fast that before you know it - you will have been fleeced. How do I know - because I worked down there for over a decade and things have only gotten worse.
ReplyDeleteThis is a total waste of money! It is not DC or NYC. It is @#$#$#@ing Ocean City, MD. This is why no one is going to OC for any more than 1-3 days in the Summer. Soon, no one will be going there. They can't sell any Condos FOR YEARS there! Even at completely discounted prices because of stuff like this. You can drive to a clean beach south of OC and stay for a WEEK or more for LESS!
ReplyDeleteOcean City owns the "Ocean City Golf Club" at the end of Rt 611. This is the course that has the Club Mgr and Superintendent who make $90K to $109K. These rates are the highest on the Eastern Shore well over the top courses like Lighthouse Sound, Rum Pointe and Glen Riddle. Of course we all know Tom Ruarke is cheap so he wouldn't pay these type of wages.
ReplyDeleteI believe you are incorrect 2:25. The golf course does not show a big profit at all. It shows hardly any profit at all and according to budgets not expecting any (as in ZERO) this year or next.
ReplyDeleteThis is criminal. The average person earns no way near their base salary. I guess it is true what I've heard about them, you gotta pay to play!
ReplyDeleteOK....Let's compare Ocean City with another comparable city in Maryland: Wait...you really can't do that because it's the most unique city - with unique problems - in the state.
ReplyDeleteLet's take into consideration that this tiny little strip of land becomes the 2nd largest city in the State of Maryland for just about three months a year. It's 2nd only to Baltimore. You want to compare OC to Baltimore?? No.
Let's consider that most of the service people - the "top 100" - work harder in this town for six months a year than most comparable occupations work in an entire year.
They work in an occupation that is directly or indirectly responsible for the financial well-being of a town that could easily crumble if not for dedicated service people.
Some are dedicated through loyalty - some are dedicated from the financial end of the job. I don't really care which one drives the worker in this town as long as they keep it clean, safe, and fun for everybody.
It's a yeoman's job they do. Pay them for it! They earn it.
The Salisbury Chief of Police makes about $60,000 a year to control a town of about 30,000 people.
ReplyDeleteThe Ocean City Chief of Police make $144,000 to control about 300,000 people during three months of prime season.
Would the writer of the editorial like to compare year-round crime stats?
Maybe more money to the top 100 in Salisbury would save that town.
What a bunch of BS 7:22. Obviously you are 1 of the wage earners on this list. These guys work hard for 3 months and take it easy for 9 months.
ReplyDeleteThese wages are sky-high and the tourists and out-of-town property owners are the ones who suffer and are getting scammed to pay these wages.
hey 9pm, many of them go to Wilmington at the split above Queenstown and the other majority get off at 404 to go to the DE beaches. Nice try though!! I cross the bridge frequently and at 404 I have smooth sailing all the way to the bury.
ReplyDeleteNo one in this seasonal town deserves to make this obscene amount of money when the people who live here make about a fifth of what they are making. How did they ever get to make as much as they do for a few months work? Anyone???? Does anyone know who started all this? I would love to know.
ReplyDelete7:22 says-" Let's consider that most of the service people - the "top 100" - work harder in this town for six months a year than most comparable occupations work in an entire year"
ReplyDeleteSo not true. You go to any county in MD surrounding Balto or DC and beyond and things are going on 24/7 365 days a year. Listen to a Fire/EMS/PD scanner in AA county and it never stops-never- year round. Same w/Public Works in these areas. There's multiple incidents around the clock that needs the attention of PW always.
The only days the east bound span of the bridge may be backed up in the summer, is on Friday's starting mid afternoon and early afternoon on Saturday's, 9pm. If anything it's no where near what the backups were 10 yrs ago.
ReplyDeleteSo by division after the police dept, the park and rec is second with 5 people taking in $600k + holidays + benefits + take home cars for any real work for 5 Months of the year? What kind of revenues does this pr and golf course bring into the town? Oh, I forgot, there are no other golf courses to use, or recreational activities for a person to use? Rich, how to do you define "out of control"?
ReplyDeleteTry about 90 days out of the year 7:22. The rest of the time OC is Deadsville.
ReplyDeleteMost of the OC town employees couldn't keep up with what goes on in even the smaller cities within MD like Hagerstown, Cumberland and the city of Frederick which as 6:59 said is 24/7 365 day a year.
Neither bring in any revenue 8:16
ReplyDeleteThe golf course only takes away from private enterprise and P&R is used by the takers sponges who were taught by irresponsible no good parents sponges to always have their hand out and are so stupid they have to have to government come up with recreation for them because they are incapable of thinking (product of public schools) for themselves.
7:33 and 6:59: I was going to end my post with the fact that I am not on the "top 100". Not even on the bottom 100. I'm a past vacationer; then resident; and now retired and own a small business in OC.
ReplyDeleteTo make my business work, I put in more hours - more consecutive hours in six months than any comparable business owner does in a year in this state. Then I "take it easy" as someone said, for about six months.
Hearing your complaints, I suppose you think that teachers shouldn't get paid for summer months. It's the same thing.
And finally: Consider crime; safety; recreation; traffic; cleanliness, etc. in OC, and let's compare it to the mess in that outhouse of a city just 35 miles up the road from this town - the town that "pays it's city workers too much money".
I, personally, think that they are worth it. Pay 'em!
"And finally: Consider crime; safety; recreation; traffic; cleanliness, etc. in OC, and let's compare it to the mess in that outhouse of a city just 35 miles up the road from this town - the town that "pays it's city workers too much money"."
ReplyDeleteOcean City's a bit of an "outhouse" especially in the off season. Take a drive around the streets during off season day or night and the class of people you see wandering around makes you think you are in West Baltimore. For the small number of year round residents the drug arrests in OC are through the roof. That goes to show the caliber of people living in OC. So many wouldn't be selling drugs in OC if the customers weren't there to buy. Probably why home break-ins are on the rise it seems.
1:14: I'll take a walk at 2, 3, or 4 o'clock in the morning anytime of the year through OC's "worst neigborhood" (which I've done before), and you do the same in Salisbury.
ReplyDeleteI'd venture to guess that I'd be having a nice breakfast on the 'boards after that walk, while you are still filling out SPD paperwork - probably at PRMC.
Yes, OC pays the big bucks - but we also get results.
The only purpose in posting this is to rile up poor people who don't understand why they never climbed the work ladder and achieved success.
ReplyDeleteNothing like a heavy dose of self- serving government official to destroy the financial Viability of a seasonal resort Thanks a lot Dennis
ReplyDelete5:20-I don't know how many times you have walked in OC during those times but I have a lot when I was involved with Beagle rescue years ago. I was walking the dog at all hours of the night, year round and more often than not encountered unsavory people (usually a group) roaming around. I didn't even feel confident and safe carrying pepper spray and gave up on the dogs fearing for my own safety. From reading the paper and hearing different things like a violent assault that happened the other night putting the victim in Shock Trauma I think you are giving a false sense of security.
ReplyDeleteThey need a union, they are all under paid lol!
ReplyDelete12:43 visit MACO website see all MD county pay.
ReplyDeleteThe real question of the day is who are the silly fool voters that elected these wannabe leaders? The FOP and another union supported this bunch of Happy Larry's. Speaks volumes of the mentality of those groups.
ReplyDeleteIt's now June and OC is still without a police chief. It was no secret a year ago that the former chief was due to leave at the first of the year. If this new council had an ounce of competency selecting the new chief would have been priority and in place months ago. It's unfair to not only the applicants but to the voters who are not getting their money's worth with this new quite inept "majority."
I listen to the scanner and (haven't heard any yet this year) but strong armed robberies seem to be epidemic in Ocean City in the summer. Those and fights involving large groups of people. There was one on the boardwalk last night from what I was able to understand-maybe around 8th St (not sure) but it wasn't south downtown near the usual fighting spot-the underage places.
ReplyDeleteI think the voters in OC should be concerned because the company where these meters were purchased (Cale) was no so long ago raided by the FBI and the IRS because they were involved with kickbacks and corruption.
ReplyDeleteWhy would the council even consider do business with a company that engages in illegal activities? Before anyone comes out with the they didn't know excuse, I'll nip that in the bud here and now.
It's their responsibility to know everything about any company/person/etc that they spend tax payers money with.
Armed robbery last night. I don't know any details other than it occurred sometime after midnight.
ReplyDeleteI think 5:20 is either delusional or out of touch with what really goes on in Ocean City.
These salaries are way out of line. Think about it like this. Ocean City is busy about 4 months or 120 days a year. That means in that 4 month time period a police officer will work 80 days in the busy season. He will work another 160 days when it's dead in town. Not bad work if you can get it.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading in one of the local newspapers a while back that the Ocean City convention center director quit to take the same job in Tampa Bay Florida. Tampa bay has a population of about 400,000 with an additional 200,000 people in surrounding towns. It also has two sports franchises and the convention center hosted the 2012 Republican National Convention. Funny thing about the article is that the O.C. convention director took a pay cut to go to Tampa Bay.
