Proposed Salisbury Budget Defended

SALISBURY – At a public hearing regarding the mayor’s proposed budget, which includes an increase in the tax rate, a taxpayer’s concerns over having to pay for duplicated services between the city and Wicomico County were heard.

“The budget this year is dominated by the fact that our assessable base has dropped considerably this year,” City Administrator John Pick said. “It has been dropping slowly for the last few years but this year we took a big hit.”

Pick furthered, Salisbury’s assessable base has dropped 22.1 percent since the recession began and is currently around 2007 to 2008 levels.

  1. As Fruitland town manager Rick Pollitt supported giving taxpayers that live in the municipalities a lower tax rate to offset the duplication of services that we pay for twice, until he was elected.

  2. Duh revenues drop you idiots cause your chasing solid working tax payers and bussiness away from MD.. you all built it..so you idoits own it..CUTS deep cuts is the only answer since you all are as dumb as rocks... get buissneses here jobs then your tax revenues and assessible bases wont drop..with lowers taxes people spend more..higer taxes may mean a higher % for nanny state but it results in less products and services bought and slows growth..tabacco tax a prime example and gambling and achocol projections soon to follow..you politicians are so stupid....

  3. Almost every business in America has downsized. Full time employees have been pushed into part time employees because of the threat of Obamacare as well.

Rick Pollitt and Jim Ireton are INCREASING the size of local government. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what some of the core problems are in Salisbury and Wicomico County. Unfortunately both need to cut staff and reduce overhead.

YOU CANNOT TAX YOUR WAY OUT OF A BAD ECONOMY.

Yes, there will be hardships but we are seeing other communities/cities go bankrupt because liberal leaders figure that's the only, (easy) way out. GUESS WHAT FOLKS, who do you think is going to PAY for those bankruptcies???? ALL AMERICANS, that's who!

You keep electing these jackasses, you get what you deserve. I just love how LIBERALS couldn't give a damn about their own children's future because most of them have never had a private sector job to know what it means to survive.

  4. A public hearing means nothing. It's a done deal, your taxes will increase and your voice means nothing. That's what you get for voting for liberal Democrats. Ok, keep it up. But when the free ship runs out from those of us that work, then what are going to do.

  6. They have cut employees....just look at the roads department. Now you all are bitching about the condition of three roads and tall grass. Classic example of wanting your cake and eating it too. You all scream for less government and taxes and the next sentence is one where you expect something else. What business wants to move to a county where they can't even take care of their roads?

  8. There is NO EXCUSE for the sloppy budget work of the administration and the NEW council majority's willingness to accept it.
