A commercial vehicle described as a “Bethany Resort Furnishing” box truck failed to stop causing the box truck to strike the marked police car. This caused a chain reaction involving four vehicles total. The two officers inside the police vehicle, who are not being identified at this time, were treated at the scene by Ocean City EMS and transported to Atlantic General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both officers were later released from the hospital, however will not return to duty for several days. The police vehicle involved sustained a significant amount of damage and has been taken out of service.
The operator of the at-fault commercial vehicle has been identified as John Clifton Truitt, 33, of Salisbury, MD and was charged with:
- Failing to control speed to avoid a collision
- Negligent driving
- Failing to have valid medical certificate (Commercial Driver Code Violation)
The other three vehicles involved were not significantly damaged and could be driven from the scene. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

ReplyDeleteI think that is a stupid law. I never get close to the person in front of me but if someone behind me slams into me how can I avoid hitting the person in front of me. I was not my fault someone rammed into the back of me.

ReplyDeleteactually it is a law any time a person rear ends somebody in the state of Maryland they are automatically at fault even in stoplight cases where they are too close together. if you go back to your driving lessons you will remember that you are actually supposed to be a certain amount of feet behind vehicle in front of you even at a stoplight. and that wall PIs to everybody even the police. so technically everybody should get a charge. Except for the person that was in the very front the person that only got rear ended and did not rear end somebody

DeleteThe faster the at fault vehicle is traveling the further the other vehicle will be driven down the highway. Fortunately the officers and others only suffered minimal injuries!

ReplyDeleteExcuse me....someone was NOT on a cell phone. If you weren't there don't judge. There were witnesses that said the 3 cars ahead of him came to a sudden stop after they went through a light...NOT at a stop sign and the cop hit the other car first. Get the facts straight before you post the story.
