US Households On Foodstamps Hit Record High

Record Dow, record S&P, record debt, record plunge in gold, and now: record US households on foodstamps. What's not to like. While today's gold selloff may be confusing to everyone, one can scratch off some 23,087,886 US households, or the number that according to the USDA [3]were on foodstamps in January and just happen to be a fresh all time high, as the likely sellers, especially when one considers that the average monthly benefit to each household dropped to a record low of $274.04. This number probably ignores, for good reason, the once every four years fringe benefits of Obamaphones and other such made in China trinkets.

  3. Wages are low and food is expensive. Healthy food is even more expensive. I have no problem with my taxes going to feed people. I'd hope most Americans feel the same. The problem is that so many take advantage of it.

  4. My arent' you the naive one 3:37. This has ZERO to do with feeding hungry Americans. It has all to do with those who lobbyied for this exapansion-big food corps, retailers such as Walmart who gain 2fold-one by more of their underpaid employees qualifying and also by being a grocery retailers. Big banks are profiting to the tunes of billion dollar contracts for the card transactions.
The government could pay every reciepient of this entitlement $60,000/per year for the money spent to impliment and oversee this program.

  5. Food stamps have ZERO to do with feeding hungry people!? Wow. Surely you jest. Those people buying food are really not buying food? Then they can't be eating it either right? I must be naive too.

  6. 9:29, No where was it stated that food stamps have zero to do with feeding hungry people. The latest food stamp expansion was dreamed up, orchestated and lobbied for by corporations and bank that are profitting heavily from the expansion. Look it up. This is how politics works. There's a hidden motive which very few people bother to look into and blindly believe what the governemtn is telling them.
Now as far as the people not eating the food. You need to go to any low income neighborhood and hang out for awhile. Shortly you will be approached to buy a box of food worth approx 20-30 dollars for $5.
A relative of a titled school says employees are approached constantly to buy food and another one who volunteers at a church food pantry said they had to get together with the other food panties in the area so they weren't handing out boxes of food to the same people who were selling it. Selling this food (and the 'stamps' themselves for pennies on the dollar) has become a career for some.
You are very naive. Get out and see who it is in the real world.
