Are You A Looker? Motorcyclists Are Looking Out For You

Office of Highway Safety reminds motorists to look twice for motorcyclists.

Dover
– With winter gone and spring bringing warmer weather, more motorcyclists are out on the roads. The Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) is reminding motorists to keep an eye out for motorcyclists because they are looking out for you.
Across the nation, motorcycle crashes continue to be on the rise. To date this year Delaware has seen 22 motorcycle injury crashes and 1 motorcycle fatal crash. That is why the OHS continues to promote both Motorcycle Safety campaigns Share The Road and Respect Your Ride.

The Share The Road campaign is aimed at motorists to be extra alert to keep an eye out for motorcyclists on Delaware roadways. Motorists are reminded to allow a motorcyclist a full lane width and allow for more following distance between you and the motorcyclists. Although it may seem that there is enough room in the traffic lane for a motor vehicle and a motorcycle, the motorcycle needs the room to maneuver safely. Do not share the lane, share the road.

Education and outreach efforts for the Share The Road campaign include billboards, bathroom mirror clings, radio ads, stickers and window clings with the share the road message.

  1. The wife and I went to Myrtle Beach cover 5 yrs ago for vacation of 2 wks. We made reservations at a condo. at very good due to the time of season and we had ocean front views.Unkown to use it had to be Bikers Week and god we never seen anything like that.Motels and hotels had marked off two first floors of the parking spaces for the bikers. However we still had a great time seeing all the attractions which are not there anymore. We had no problems with any of the bikers. They had several accidents resulting in inguries.Since all the shows have been shut down and moved out I lost any desireto return.Ocean City could learn from Myrtle Beach.

  2. There was a motorcycle down, with police and an ambulance present on US-13 this afternoon just north of Princess Anne (near Allen Rd). The bike was on the edge of the road and the rider was about 10 feet away in the ditch. I wondered if someone forced him off the road.

  3. I watch out for motorcycles and all other vehicles. But, watching these guys head down Nanticoke and the back roads, doing well over the speed limit (if not 100mph), doing wheelies, knee dragging corners and turns, etc... it's them who should watch out for themselves.
