Sugary Drinks Kill 180,000 people Around The World, Study Suggests

Sugary drinks are often in the crosshairs of public health advocates, with studies and campaigns often spotlighting the links between drinking soda and risk for diabetes and obesity.

Now, a new study puts a staggering number on the toll that drinking these beverages takes on the world: Researchers associated 180,000 deaths each year with soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages.

Researchers pulled data from a 2010 study on global disease burden for their analysis to come up with the number of deaths linked to sugary drink consumption. They calculated sugar intake around the world based on age and gender, in addition to the link between intake and risk for obesity and diabetes.

  1. The product pictured with this post is produced with real sugar. IMHO, these sodas are far less hazardous to consume than mass produced soft drinks such as Pepsi or Coke that are made from processed corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is one of the causes of obesity in the US. People should ovoid HFCS products. Exercise is the determining factor for obesity and diabetes. You can drink 10 servings of a high calorie beverage (soda) and be obese or you can consume 10 servings of soda and be thin. It depends on whether or not you sit on the sofa all day or run 5 miles per day.
    Calories in v. calories out!

  3. WRONG. Living a life of poor diet with no excercise kills. Everyone always wants to try to label a product as evil. Look no further than the mirror for the source of your health woes.
