Police in Md. holding DNA On People Not Convicted Of Crimes

Even as the U.S Supreme Court reviews Maryland's law on police collection of DNA samples, many law enforcement agencies in the state are collecting and holding genetic material from murder victims and people never convicted of crimes.

The practices have raised concerns among some legislators and the public defender's office, who fought for privacy protections and other restrictions in a 2009 state law that allows DNA collection from people arrested on suspicion of serious crimes.

Now, those critics say, police are taking advantage of loopholes and using the genetic material in ways not contemplated by state law. The objections have emerged at a crucial moment for the law, which is up for renewal in Annapolis this year and was argued this week before the nation's highest court.

  1. What!? The police are skirting the law to their own advantage?! No way! You would think that the police (experts on the law--- no scratch THAT) would be trying to ADHERE to the law, but as usual, the law doesn't necessarily apply to them, unless of course, there are "loopholes" that allow them to do whatever they please. As usual. Those damn "loopholes", like the neeed for a warrant. Or the right against self-incrimination. Or the right to a trial BEFORE punishment and confiscation of property. Or, the best one -- cops don't commit crimes unless its caught on video. Then who you gonna believe -- the cops, or your lying eyes? They - long ago - lost the moral high ground and the desire to set the example. Now it just comes down to how hard they put their knee on your neck....

    1. WHAT? Good. People that are law abiding should have no problem with this. If someone raped your mother and then killed her I bet you would want the person caught. This is a great tool for the good guys to be able to catch the bad guys. The bad guys have too many rights and use them to their advantage and to skirt the system. Just go to court anyday and watch the postponements, requests for jury, forgot my lawyer, and then you have crazy organizations like the ACLU that make it even worse. If it means that a sample of my DNA is sitting on a shelf somewhere but we can bring people to justice, I would say that is fine with me.

  3. So I guess none of you have noticed things missing? Cups, bottles, eating utensils, and anything that could have your DNA on it are fair game.If a person is in any way suspected of a crime, someone will literally sit,say in a fast food restaurant for example and wait for them to throw their bag in the trash. That empty cup or half eaten burger is all they need for a sample.

  4. 9:11 is a cop. Willing to give up YOUR rights, because HIS are never threatened. And spouts the typical "I'm too stupid to understand the big picture, and the small picture is just too confusing" sheepthink, otherwise known as the "if you aren't doing anything wrong, then you don't need any rights" philosophy of the politically and historically ignorant Nazi pretenders. They think the Bill of Rights is an invoice they've been ducking and the Constitution is what something is made of. I would THINK that a cop would know that "we, the people" are LEGALLY PROTECTED (supposedly by that "Bill of Rights") against self-incrimination, especially BEFORE a trial. But as him and his Nazi supporters like to do, we are now stopped, frisked and searched to see IF --- IF!!! -- IF!! we are committing any crimes. We USED to be a country where men were proudly independent, self sufficient, and loved their individual freedom. Now we have a country full of boot licking storm troopers and their familiars who can't wait to give up all the rights so many have died for....you SHOULD be abjectly ashamed. Instead you compete for the shiniest boots and the sharpest Nazi salute. Read the Constitution, Heinrich. Twice. Get your friend , Adolf, to highlight the Bill of Rights. Read them twice. Then pack your crap and move to China. You'll be safe there. Plus, you will really like the way the government and police keep the citizens under such nice control. You'll fit right in....
