Minimum Wage Hike Would Boost Economy Or Destroy Jobs, Friends And Foes Say

An initiative to raise minimum wage to $10 an hour in two years promises to be among the most controversial economic issues debated at the Maryland General Assembly this year.

Sponsored by Sen. Rob Garagiola, D-Montgomery, and Del. Aisha Braveboy, D-Prince George’s, the initiative would reshape the state’s job market for low-income workers.

“This is an anti-poverty bill,” said Garagiola at Thursday’s Senate hearing. “If we raise working families’ wages, we’re going to improve their quality of life, and there will be less reliance on state government.”

    Baloney.
The people who will suffer most are the low-wage workers, because many will lose their jobs that aren't worth paying $10/hr. for
This will only drive unemployment up further, especially among young blacks.
There is lots of history that says this is true.

  2. If increasing the minimum wage lowers the poverty rate...why hasn't it worked the past 40 years? Because it doesn't.

You're right about who will suffer will be the low wage workers. Not sure what you're comment has to do with it driving up unemployment further especially for young blacks? Last time I checked there's quite a few whites that are working jobs for next to nothing as well.
The other is issue is that when they raise minimum wage, businesses will just raise their prices to match the employment pay so it did nothing to start with. It's going to drive our economy further into the ground.

  4. If a $10 minimum wage helps people why not raise it to $100/hour? Or $1,000/hour? Oh hell, why not just make it $1,000,000/hour and everybody will be instant millionaires.
