Disease Destroying Flowers; Impatiens Hard To Find

Impatiens are a garden favorite that may be very hard to find this season because of a disease that's destroying the flowers, but experts said to not fret -- there are other items you can plant.

The problem was first spotted in Europe and has since made its way to the United States.

Valley View Farms in Cockeysville has plenty of flowers to plant this spring, but garden specialist Carrie Engel said impatiens can't be found anywhere because the yearly favorite has been diseased by a fungus called downy mildew.

The fungus showed up last year in gardens in 37 states, including Maryland, and experts said it hit the East Coast particularly hard.
