Arson #62 in Accomack Co.

ACCOMACK COUNTY - Firefighters were out early Thursday battling smoke and flames in a vacant commercial building in the 29500 block on Lankford Highway. Va. State Police investigators say the fire was spotted around 4:00 a.m.

That's the 62nd suspicious fire in Accomack County since November 12, 2012. Investigators say nearly three-quarters of the fires have been discovered between 6:00 p.m. and midnight and most of the targeted structures have been on primary and secondary routes, which gives the arsonists easy access to come and go without being detected.

  8. I really do not think ANYONE wants to stop this. Everyone know's it is illegal but the end result is eliminating the blight and eyesore of abandoned properties.
That or police are just completely incompetent.

  9. I used to think maybe it was a firefighter but now leaning toward someone who maybe just moved into the area after being released from prison for similar arsons. With the large number of fires it's like whomever is making up for lost time and seems to be experienced in that they know what not to do in order to get caught.
I think I would be looking into a recent arsonist parolee who transfered their parole to either VA, MD and/or DE even. It shouldn't be assumed that the person even lives in the vicinity of the fires.

  13. Probably not very many were insured if any at all. Vacant dilapidated structures are nearly impossible to insure. Misrepresentation on the part of the propery owners would have to be involved and I doubt there are that many dishonest people who mispresented the property in order to have it covered by insurance.

  20. The ignorance of the police in this melee is astounding! There are so many places to put up trail cams to monitor abandoned properties that not doing this should be considered dereliction of duty! The fact that there now 62 less properties to trail cam makes the odds even better! The amount of the reward alone would buy the cams! I can't get past the stupidity of LEO and FD here!

  21. Always a dilapidated structure off the beaten path. Maybe they should check local counsel members who have been complaining about locals not improving their property so the tax asessments can increase.
How else would they know where these vacant structures are located through out the county.

  22. I wonder...does the arsonist read this blog? Did he burn down something on Rt 13 to prove you wrong? I wonder who would have enough education about setting fires or how they burn to do this? I wonder if that person has a pass to come and go into the state without notice because they work or have property there but live to the north. I wonder where he went for the holiday season and why that is important to him? Seems like there are some very basic questions that would indicate who this might be. Maybe a fireman who has a family but not a close family who is a loner and a chip on his shoulder. Has a reason (job or property) to venture to Virginia on a regular basis so he would not seem out of place. Maybe military? I wonder.
