Study Shows Black Men Receive 20% Longer Prison Terms Than White Men For Committing The Same Crime
Prison sentences of black men were nearly 20% longer than those of white men for similar crimes in recent years, an analysis by the U.S. Sentencing Commission found.
That racial gap has widened since the Supreme Court restored judicial discretion in sentencing in 2005, according to the Sentencing Commission's findings, which were submitted to Congress last month and released publicly this week.
In its report, the commission recommended that federal judges give sentencing guidelines more weight, and that appeals courts more closely scrutinize sentences that fall beyond them.
I retired from the Criminal Justice Organization, and black folk use PUBLIC DEFENDERS instead of their own Attorneys.
Who is prosecuting you? "THE STATE" and who does the Public Defender work for? "The State" so therefore using Government Services places you in a NO WIN situation.
If you look at this very close , the same crime , but the black men were guilty of committing this crime more than one time. This is justice , at it's best , the more crime you do , the more time you do .
Anon 3:50, I didn't read that in the article. Looks like you are looking for justification of the findings. It is what it is. Now, if the article stressed longer time due to repeat crimes I WOULD GO ALONG WITH IT. Look at the records of the children of some of our local officials. They too are repeat offenders and they are caucasian. They get NO jail time. NOW EXPLAIN THAT.
And about nine times more likely to be a perp in an urban environ. At 14% of the population they have committed 52% of the murders in the US over the last 40 years.
Has anyone ever figured out why the US has the highest per capita prison population of any country on earth? Seriously, there are some really bad people worldwide. Why us?In light of the current # of incarcerated individuals in the US,there are those who still want more prisons built.
Most of the defendants in front of judges (mostly white judges) are black. Here's some inside info --- JUDGES don't like black people, cops don't like black people, and PROSECUTORS don't like black people. That ain't racist. It ain't conjecture. And it ain't vague generalization. Its a fact. You should hear what they all say privately, among their families and friends. Then contemplate the disparity in sentencing, Forrest.
Could prior arrest have anything to do with it?

ReplyDeleteDont do the crime (again and again) if you cant do the time.
ReplyDeleteWhat I see is exactly the opposite!
