With the Salisbury general election approaching, Joe Albero and Mayor Jim Ireton are both preparing for the April 2 vote in hopes their efforts in their campaign will be a success.

Joe Albero is a blogger and currently the publisher for the website sbynews.blogspot.com, which covers a wide range of stories relating to Salisbury, the surrounding areas in Maryland and some even covering nationwide stories and political issues.

Albero said he is primarily focused on restoring Salisbury’s economy.

“The city’s focus on economic development has been too ‘downtown-centric,’” Albero said. “Yes, we must revitalize downtown, but we must also look to attract, and retain, employers throughout the city that offer high quality jobs to our citizens. Too much emphasis has been placed on attracting low paying retail and hospitality jobs.”

Albero said Salisbury needs to expand downtown as more of an entertainment attraction for students, and plans should be focused on bringing more people in from out of town.

“Once a sufficient customer base is established for downtown, we will then see entrepreneurs willing to invest in other types of businesses which will further broaden downtown’s appeal,” Albero said. “I intend to devote half of my work week to selling Salisbury to the world. We must also work more closely with Salisbury/Wicomico Economic Development (SWED) to market Salisbury and avoid duplication of effort.”

  1. You need to let the students know about SBYNEWS let them know they have a voice. I know the story of why you started the blog and you should let everyone else know. Best of luck to you Joe, time for Salisbury to wake up.

  4. As an outsider from a neighboring county looking in I can see what is going on.

No one should for a second believe that these landlords are rich. Of course they want everyone to think they are but just look on mdlandrec.net and I bet you will see most are swimming in debt.

I see the flip flop Mayor Ireton did with the landlords. Now he wants more affordable housing. It's a last ditch attempt to help his new found buddies, the landlords.

If Day and Ireton get back in everyone in Salisbury will suffer except for a handful but it will catch up with them too eventually.

The affordable housing will benefit only those who are stuck working at low paying jobs and will also benefit those who employ them.

Any and all homeowners will suffer greater value drops on their homes because no one will be able to afford to purchase homes.

Businesses will suffer because not enough money flowing to support them.

  5. Had a long discussion with a student nurse yesterday.
She is aware of the crap going on in salisbury as well the nation.
She was telling me a lot of doctors will no longer accept medicare because they won't pay.

  6. Gee, wouldn't it be nice if the kids who spend four years here decided to stay, raise families, send their kids to the local schools and broaden the tax base?

But why should they stay? The city is an ugly dump, jobs are few to be found, crime is out of control.

I pray that Joe can get this place turned around. I can't bear to look at one more for sale sign around here.

  7. As adamant as you seem to be about results and holding people accountable, how can you not call out SWED for what is an apparently abysmal record in regards to attracting business to our county and/or city. Let me guess, it's the mayor's fault, maybe Rick Pollitt's or maybe even the Governor.

  8. anonymous 5:05, the buck stops at the Mayors Office. Look, the fact that I have announced I will make the Mayors job full time for the part time pay, I stated I would spend 50% of my time doing the Mayors business and the other 50% of the time being the next economic development director for the City of Salisbury.

I'm sorry I didn't spell things out exactly the way YOU would like to see it but I think I've said just about enough without hurting any one's feelings on this matter.

  10. SWED's got some good people and know what they are doing.

  11. We need to find a way to sway the bribed renters' votes for Day to Ms Debbie, though. Those folks never have seen a PAC 14 meeting to see the good she does every day.

  12. Debbie Campbell is the renters' friend, not the slumlords.

What the landlords don't know is, some of the renters they carried to the polls voted for Debbie.

    Dream on.
Personally, and it is for this reason, I do NOT think college students should be allowed to vote in our city elections. They are, after all, TEMPORARY residents.
