Governor Markell, Lt. Gov. Denn, AG Biden Unveil Bill To Require Reporting Of Lost, Stolen Firearms

(Newark, DE) Surrounded by members of the Delaware State Police and other law enforcement agencies, Governor Jack Markell today joined Lt. Gov. Matt Denn and Attorney General Beau Biden to unveil legislation that would require gun owners to notify police whenever their firearms are lost or stolen.

The bill is one of five gun safety measures being proposed by Gov. Markell, Lt. Gov. Denn and Attorney General Biden in the wake of the Newtown, CT massacre and other recent mass shootings. The prime sponsors of the bill are Sen. Margaret Rose Henry (D-Wilmington East) and Rep. Michael Barbieri (D-Newark).

“Far too often, guns that are stolen or lost wind up being used to commit crimes,” said Governor Markell. “If we’re serious about keeping guns out of the wrong hands, we need to do a better job of accounting for these weapons. Reporting a lost or stolen weapon is easy, it’s responsible, and it makes our streets safer.”

  1. How stupid is that? So if I own an old gun that is not registered and report it stolen, then I'm charged for owning a non registered gun that nobody can find. Leave it to the Democrats.

  2. So can we now charge Eric Holder for not reporting the guns he gave to the Mexicans.

  3. 12:54 Thank you. Finally someone who makes common sense. Problem is if you would run for a elected office you will loose because most voters don't have any common sense.

  4. I think they are just closing loop holes, if they come for your gun and you say "it was lost" or "it was stolen" they will then say "show us the required paperwork" You know, like Nazi Germany, "VER ARE YOUR PAPERS?!"

  5. 2:00 They won't come for a gun they don't know you have. They will only come for a gun that you registered because you told them you had one.

  6. I agree with 2:18. I'm sure that anyone who couldn't be bothered to comply with the law requiring gun registration will not comply with the law requiring that missing guns be reported.

  7. You pass more draconian gun laws, and all my registered guns will be reported lost! But only the registered ones, not the ones they don't know I have! If they then catch me with it, well, i just found it an hour ago...

  10. Ahhhhh, the "safety" argument. How does reporting a lost or stolen gun make me safer? The gun doesn't go off now? This is the proper stand--- Don't register a damn thing. Openly say so. These "representatives" haven't represented ANYTHING or ANYONE, other than themselves and the special interest bribery machines. You'll know I have a gun when you see (if you are lucky enough) the muzzle flash. COPS can't make the streets safer, but a piece of paper will??? Riiiiight.
