Senator applauds the bipartisan effort of Maryland’s leadership and urges FEMA to act
Crisfield, MD – Senator Jim Mathias (District 38 – Somerset, Wicomico & Worcester Counties) released the following statement today regarding the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) denial of individual assistance to residents of Somerset County:
“I cannot remember a public policy decision that more deeply aggrieved me than that of the denial of individual assistance aid to Somerset County families, homes and businesses. While we have tremendous volunteer organizations, that have been working day and night to help our community, more assistance is needed. Since the day Sandy hit, I have been working with the Governor’s office, members of our Congressional Delegation from both sides of the aisle, our local elected officials; as well as personnel from FEMA and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to provide help and relief to our residents in Crisfield, and across the Lower Eastern Shore.
I appreciate the efforts that our elected officials have made and join them in urging FEMA to grant the Individual Assistance Grants. As one of Maryland’s poorest counties, and the one that has been hardest hit, Somerset County needs the help that these funds will provide. We can protect the families, farming, commercial waterman and other small businesses in Somerset, and help others struggling in our communities, who preserve our traditional legacy, and I urge FEMA to act and grant this relief to our community.”

Senator Mathias represents District 38, which includes all of Somerset and Worcester Counties and part of Wicomico County on the Lower Eastern Shore. He is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over healthcare, energy, and business legislation. Prior to his election to the Senate, he served the residents of the Lower Shore as a member of the House of Delegates and as Mayor of Ocean City.
You can bet one thing. If that occured in chicago FEMA wouldva been in there the very next day. Hatti got millions medical ships, etc within a week.
ReplyDeleteNo gray area here. They either do help or don't help.We don't need to see anyones smiling face, because smiling faces fool ignorant people and action speaks louder than words.FEMA needs to either get the stick or be dissolved.
ReplyDeleteOf course Mitt Romney had the best idea for FEMA. He proposed that disaster relief funds should be bundled and given directly to states instead of them having to declare disaster and asking for help from FEMA.
ReplyDeleteWhen people keep on electing incompetant democrats who are nothing more than career politicians into office this is what will continue to happen.
There was a chance in Nov to elect an overachiever, highly competent, success driven, goal oriented person into the presidency but the majority of the feebleminded voters blew it.
Jim does all he can to assist. He really does care.
ReplyDeletefirst of all its not femas job to rebuild homes....thats what flood insurance is for. Many of the homes that are condemed in crisfield probably should have been torn down ten years ago...i drove thru there on saturday. some of the homes were obviously in very poor repair loong before sandy.maybe cooler heads will prevail and those folks will get some help. As far as Mathias goes lets all remember how he claimed to know nothing about how the casino here at ocean downs was going to give up 18% to baltimore county untill he was finally called out and admitted that he not only knew but voted to make it happen. Hes only interested in being re-elected. when was the last time he was seen in crisfield before sandy.....never just to go and visit always with a motive like the clambake or something else....please he could care less its about votes for him.remember folks he just becoming like every other elected official....but yes he is a nice guy....and will promise the world....
ReplyDelete6:48 exactly! You can put a turd between 2 peices of bread and try and make a sandwich...but in the end its still s*it
ReplyDelete6:48 says-"first of all its not femas job to rebuild homes....thats what flood insurance is for"
ReplyDeleteWell 6:48 you just better tell FEMA that's not their "job" ASAP because their own website says otherwise. They need to immediately correct their site!
Taken directly from FEMA site-
"Replacement: Financial assistance may be available to homeowners to replace their home destroyed in the disaster that is not covered by insurance. The goal is to help the homeowner with the cost of replacing their destroyed home."
"•Repair: Financial assistance may be available to homeowners to repair damage from the disaster to their primary residence that is not covered by insurance. The goal is to make the damaged home safe, sanitary, and functional."
I see Jim Mathias everywhere. He's been in Pocomoke atleast 3 or 4 times in the past few months. FYI I also saw him in Somerset for the fair this summer.
ReplyDeleteI do know and Joe can verify that he has had some health issues and was hospitalized several times this year so give him a break
6:48. I don't agree usually with his politics either but no one could ever deny that he's not concerned about his district all the time and not just during election season.
Toyota, you asked for it , you got it!
