Salisbury-Orlando Airport Service Nixed

Less than a year after it began the service, Allegiant Air last week announced it was no longer offering flights from the Salisbury-Ocean City-Wicomico Regional Airport.

Last February, Allegiant Air announced it was beginning low-cost, non-stop flights from Salisbury to Orlando, Fla. The new flights operated twice weekly to Orlando Sanford International Airport and carried as many as 150 passengers on each flight. The company offered fares as low as $69.99 one way between the two cities and also offered incentives such as hotel stays for passengers booking the flights. However, last week Allegiant Air abruptly announced it was discontinuing the service.

“We are always disappointed to end service in a market,” said Allegiant Travel Company Manager of Airports Eric Fletcher. “We thank Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport for their partnership and apologize to any travelers who are inconvenienced by this decision.”

Obviously they expected to make a profit.

  3. With the vast amount of industries that we have lost here on the shore - I can see why they have cancelled service. Our area has been devastated by factory and business closures. I hope that SBYnews will publish the information again. When the readers see the list - they will understand why Allegiant has decided to exodus.

    I don't think so.

What do industry closings have to do with people traveling?

  5. Did we forget this is Salisbury? This town can't even support a decent restaurant let alone a second airline. Please! When Zia's is rated best Italian Restaurant 15 years in a row you know the City is in trouble.

It's quite easy to understand why Allegiant is closing - Maryland is hostile toward businesses - period.

Would you want to locate here, knowing their reckless taxing authority? I think not.

Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. I don't have any personal experience with that or having to pay business taxes.

But it is a common theme I hear a lot of on here, so it probably does have some merit, especially when Joe also says it.

In this economy and runaway unemployment, I would think the states would be kissing up to businesses to get their citizens jobs.

But it would appear I may be a little naive in that area. And if true, what are the reasons and what, if anything, is being done about it?
