Last week, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) Laboratories Administration confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing 3 cases of influenza A H3N2 and 1 case of influenza B in 4 Baltimore Metropolitan Area children. These are the first PCR-confirmed cases in Maryland for the 2012-2013 influenza season. In contrast, the first PCR confirmation of the 2011-2012 influenza season was in late December 2011.
