‘WE ARE HUNGRY!’: MEET THE STUDENTS (AND TEACHERS!) BEHIND THE VIRAL VIDEO MOCKING MICHELLE OBAMA’S NEW LUNCH MANDATES

  • New lunch guidelines passed in 2010 as part of Michelle Obama’s health initiative (the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act) limit the amount of calories school lunches can provide.
  • The number, 850, is forcing many to go hungry, as the restrictions don’t account for active vs. inactive students or boys vs. girls.
  • One group of teens (with the help of teachers) in Kansas created a video mocking the restrictions called “We Are Hungry” and it’s gone viral.
  • Some Republican lawmakers are trying to get the calorie limits repealed.

  1. i guess hope and "change" isn't working for students and teachers either. maybe everyone will come to realize if you let the government in a little bit, they're going to take over and you won't like the results.
A LITTLE GOVERNMENT ISN'T NECESSARILY A GOOD THING!

  2. This is fabulous! That whole Act is nothing but fluff, a way to promote what works for her kids!

  3. 10;14--no this the way to condidtion our kids to obey Government without question, just like the TSA crap we endure silently conditions us to accept idiotic Government regulations without question. Michelle Obama doesn't give a rats butt about your kid, she just wants a nation of sheep that do what the Government tells them with no resistance.

  4. here's an idea... PACK YOUR OWN LUNCH and quit relying on the school to feed you if what they are providing isn't enough. problem solved!

  5. Great. For some kids, that's their only meal.

Wonder when they will ban the color red from school.

    Black, too.

Yellow is pretty dangerous. Get rid of that.

  6. 10:31 AM - don't really think that will work either because they are probably going to monitor what kids bring to school in their lunch, and if it isn't celery and carrot sticks a note will go home with the child or the parent will receive a phone call telling them what to feed their child - it's called government, government and more government control.

"For some kids, that's their only meal".
Really now, who do you expect believes that? These the same kids wearing starter jackets and $100. tennis shoes, Or are these the children whose mothers are too lazy to fix them breakfast in the mornings?

  8. If Michelle Obama were truly concerned about obesity and not just trying to make herself look important she would do something that would make a difference. It's not what kids eat at school but what they eat at home. Go to any titled elementary school and alot of those kids are fat.
If she were serious she would be lobbying to limit what people on food entitlements can buy. They would all follow the example of WIC and not allow food items to be purchased indiscriminately.
It's defies common sense to limit lunches and then the kids can go home and eat sugar filled snacks and fake calorie loaded mac and cheese for dinner.
The woman is stupid to think limiting what a kid eats for 6 or 7 hours out of the day makes a bit of differnce.

  9. Yeah, it may be their "only meal" because alot of these worthless entitlement mothers/parents/guardians feel they don't have to feed their kids because the schools will do that for them also. Just like the schools will buy them supplies, we the "do gooders" will buy them Christmas presents, and the list goes on.
It's a society of sponges and moochers anymore-the 47% that Romney spoke of but no one wants to address because it's not PC.

  10. Unfortunately there are lots of kids who get the largest amount of their daily intake from school lunch. It is sad but it is a fact. 10:38 - If you worked in the school system you would change you cynical view. Just because you see some kids that way, doesn't mean they are all that way.

  11. MANY SCHOOL SYSTEMS NO LONGER ALLOW STUDENTS TO BRING THEIR OWN LUNCH TO SCHOOL.

  12. I don't work in the school system 11:25 but 2 close relatives are teachers in titled inner city schools and another close friend an administrator and they see what goes on. My view is far from cynical but based on facts from those within who don't sugar coat and tell it like it is.
The food that these kids throw out because they don't want to eat it and won't because they are far from hungry is unreal. Not too mention the parents who hit up food pantry after food pantry and then go to the school attempting to sell the box full of food worth $20 or more dollars to school employees for $5 has gotten so epidemic that the churches and food pantries are now taking names and comparing with each other in an attempt to stop getting taken advantage of.
Teachers also "spy" on open Facebook and see what these parents are up to and see things such as them selling their foodstamps or whatever they are called today.
It's a complete fallacy that kids are going hungry and the obesity problem is proof and it is predominately a problem in titled (lower income) schools whether you choose to face it or not-those are the facts.

You know why? The lobbyists from the institutional food corporations. They know people are so stupid as to believe things like kids are hungry and in school is the only place they get balanced meals, etc......and the dumb fall for this and all the while the CEO's are getting rich, politicans are getting wined and dined and big campaign contributions and the peon tax payers are getting screwed as are the low income people who this money could be spent on better ways of helping them.
Nothing is done for the good of the people it's all about following the money trail.

  14. Report the kids you see starving. There are people being paid to look into this.

  15. 11:25, If you worked in the school system you would see that the free breakfast/lunch programs have been overrun with those who take advantage as opposed to those who are truly in need. You can sit back and see where the priority of feeding your child yourself now takes a backseat to getting your fingernails professionally done, or having the latest and greatest cell phone technology or having the biggest and newest flat screen TV.
Yes, this is not being cynical. It's being realistic and honest.

  16. 1125 If what you said is true why do you then believe that it should be the schools job to "fix" this supposed problem? Do you not believe in parental responsibility?

  18. This is a bit off topic but since Christmas was brought up maybe I can vent. For 4 years I have been buying Christmas presents for 2 children who a teacher friend told me about. I'd buy toys, clothes, books and anything that was needed for them that the grandmother would request. Alot of times the things would "disappear" but this stopped after the father dropped dead of an overdose. According to the teacher this is common in these households for the children's items to be sold for pennies on the dollar to support a family members drug or alcohol habit. Then last year the mother shows back up on the scene and requests that instead of buying the children presents could I just give them money! This is the same mother who I was told sold a $50 Walmart gift card to someone for $10!!!! You end up feeling so bad for the children but the teacher was told by an addiction councelor that the mother goes to (court ordered I may add) that when we keep on giving to these people we are enabling them to continue on with these bad habits.

  19. IF Mrs Obama seriously wants to help the health of our children, let's limit what the food stamp program can purchase. Why feed them healthy foods at school then allow them cakes and pies and soda and chips at home? Really, food stamps should not allow purchase of any item that is processed or sugar filled. What exactly are her qualifications to be making these decisions anyway? Does she have a degree in food and nutrition or just an address on Pennsylvania Avenue?

  20. Pack your own lunch

  21. Exactly 4:44-I've been saying the same thing. Doing anything other than limiting what can be purchased on food entitlements is smoke and mirrors and is meant to only fool people into thinking she really cares. She's doing a disservice to these children by not doing something that would make a difference.
