Dover -- Labor Day travelers that passed through Delaware's three main toll plaza locations on State Route 1 or Interstate 95 were part of the traditional "end-of-summer" crowds seeking one last vacation experience for 2012. The highway speed E-ZPass lanes and cash lanes at Delaware toll facilities process hundreds of thousands of vehicle trips during peak travel periods.
This past weekend was no different with over 452,000 vehicle trips counted at the I-95 Newark Plaza and 556,000 vehicle trips counted at the Dover and Biddle's Corner locations on Route 1. It is estimated that over $2.73 million was collected in tolls during the 5-day period at Delaware toll plazas.
This year's vehicle counts increased by more than 36,000 trips over last year's totals. 2011 counts were 972,054 and 2012 counts were 1,008,205 total trips. Additionally, E-ZPass usage was over 60% across all plazas.
