Date of Incident: 25 August 2012
Location: 32000 block of E. Line Road, Delmar, MD
Suspect: Joshua D. Shelton, 21, Delmar, MD
Narrative: On 25 August 2012 at 9:04 AM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported incident at a poultry farm in the 32000 block of East Line Road in Delmar. Upon arrival, the deputy met with the property owner who advised that the electric power had been turned off to his three chicken houses on his property during the night-time hour which deprived the flock of food,
water and cooling fans. As a result, almost the entire flock was found deceased. When the property owner entered the control shed which controlled the power, he located an unknown male suspect passed out on the floor of the shed, clad only in a T-Shirt and boxer shorts. This subject was also lying in a pool of his own urine. A strong odor of alcohol was also coming from the subject.
The investigating deputy managed to wake the subject and identified him as Joshua Shelton of Delmar.
Shelton advised the last thing he remembered was being on the property after a nearby concert but did not know how he ended up in the shed. The deputy surmised that in his intoxicated state, Shelton turned off the circuit breakers that controlled the electricity to the chicken houses.
It is believed that the chickens in the three houses numbered close to 70,000 and their value was in the vicinity of $20,000.00. The chickens were due to be delivered to a local processing plant the following day.
The deputy transported Shelton to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Shelton in the Detention Center in lieu of $75,000.00 bond.
