PEDESTRIAN CROSSES AGAINST WALK SIGNAL, SERIOUSLY INJURED

On June 15, 2012, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Ocean City Police and Paramedics responded to 59th Street and Coastal Highway, in reference to a pedestrian collision.

The preliminary investigation revealed that an 18-year-old male from Finksburg Maryland and his friends were walking in the crosswalk from west to east across Coastal Highway at 59th Street. While in the crosswalk the pedestrian signals changed from “Walk” to “Don’t Walk.”

The group turned around to walk back toward the center median on Coastal Highway, when the 18-year-old male attempted to continue across Coastal Highway against the pedestrian “Don’t Walk” signal he was struck in lane three by a vehicle travelling north on coastal highway.

The pedestrian was seriously injured and flown by the Maryland State Police Medivac helicopter to Peninsula Regional Medical Center with life threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was not charged. The investigation is on-going.

  2. The crosswalks in Ocean City do not give you enough time to walk across 6 lanes, particularly if you have small children with you and are carrying beach equipment. The city of OC is at fault with this. Please give people enough time to cross the highway at the walk signals. A few more seconds could make the difference.

  3. The police need to start monitoring the streets and ticketing jaywalkers. So many people have been hit by cars. It seems that their attention is focused on noise violations and underage drinking.

  4. They need to start posting on every corner how many people have died crossing where they shouldnt and when they shouldnt! This is so sad, how many will it take before people learn!

  7. whether or not the signal is still with you, I'm pretty sure maryland law says you have to stop for the pedistrian when they are in the crosswalk. Tragic as it is, it's that time of the year again! Idiots everywhere!

  8. It also says no to start crossing unless it is safe to do so, regardless if you have the light.
