Mayor Jim Ireton So Drunk He Can't Remember He Called

It was a beautiful evening Saturday night when we gathered with several friends at our home to enjoy a bon fire. As we were enjoying our evening my cell phone started ringing. It was 11:38 PM and wouldn't you know it, it was Mayor Jim Ireton. I was somewhat surprised because of the hour but I opened the phone after showing my Wife who was actually calling.

Mayor Jim Ireton was clearly drunk and wanted to tell me that he knew I had this election won. He knew that Salisbury News was much bigger than the Daily Times and that too many people in Salisbury are already saying Joe Albero was going to win this election.

The Mayor went on to tell me that we had a lot of the same views for Salisbury but before he stepped down and showed his support for me he wanted to know if I'd be interested in meeting with him Sunday at noon at his Office. He went on to say that he knows he can't beat me and he's done fighting. He mentioned something about how the people love me and support me and he knew I'd make a great Mayor because I care.

I agreed that I would meet with the Mayor on Sunday. The next morning I headed up to the GOB and when I arrived at 11:50 AM the Mayor's vehicle was not there. I called him on the same number he called me from, (his cell phone) and there was no answer. I then sent him a text message saying I was at the GOB waiting for him. Again, no reply.

I waited until 12:10 PM before I called him again, this time leaving a message on his phone stating I had waited long enough and since he hadn't responded to any of my attempts to contact him I didn't appreciate my taking family time to come meet with him and his not responding. I then stated I felt he owed me a reply call. I never got one.

At that point, since Jim was so down on the phone Saturday night I called one Council Member as I grew even more concerned he hadn't replied. After explaining the call Saturday night and his not responding, they agreed someone needed to go check up on the Mayor.

It turns out Chief Duncan made contact with Mayor Ireton and explained my concerns. The Mayor stated he had no clue what she was talking about, he hadn't spoken with me last night. The Chief responded asking if I'd be willing to turn over my phone records.

When I originally answered the phone Saturday night I put the phone up to my Wife's ear so she could tell it was Mayor Ireton. He sounded pretty trashed and she confirmed right away it was him. I waited around in Salisbury at my Office to get some kind of reply to make sure the Mayor was OK so when I left Salisbury I drove directly to the Police Department and showed staff my cell phone proving the Mayor did in fact call me very late Saturday night and they were to relay that information to the Chief.

I think we can all agree, when someone drinks that much alcohol it can become a truth serum. My conversation with the Mayor made it blatantly obvious I had a larger following, (according to his own words) than the Daily Times, people he was running into were stating I was going to win this election and between the two of us, he wasn't going to fight me in a re election bid for Mayor. The Mayor had exposed his full deck of cards.

The scariest part of all of this is the fact that the Mayor does not recall, (so he says) ever making the phone call. If that's the case he might want to have someone hide his cell phone so he's not able to make anymore drunken phone calls. He had every opportunity today to pick up the phone and call me and simply say, why are you calling me and texting me. At that point he could have told ME that he didn't make the call Saturday night. That didn't happen because he knew he screwed up. He was sleeping off a hard night of drinking and when the Chief of Police arrived he claimed he wanted an investigation of some sort into WHO made that late night phone call. HELLLOOOOO! Are we talking about a black out here? I don't thinks so.

Jim has lost the support of most of his former friends. The Daily Times has to be sick of his temper tantrums, (as are all of us) he's admitted to me personally he can no longer afford to financially stick with being Mayor. He has personally seen my Maryland Driver's License, yet claimed last week that I wasn't a resident of Salisbury. The guy is done as Mayor. You know it, I know it and after Saturday nights phone call, even he knows it.

  2. That's pretty scary. To be that intoxicated and not remember what you do is beyond belief. I'd say our Mayor needs to quit hitting the bottle.

  3. Mercy! oh Jimmy...

  4. sounds like a phony story to me. A true politician would never concede defeat before the battle has begun. You have my support Joe, but this story reeks.

  5. An Absolute disgrace---he should resign immediately. He needs to be in rehab for his alcohol issue tomorrow if not sooner. If anyone knows someone who can intervene and get him help.. but in the mean time he should resign!!!!!

  6. We've all done stupid crap after a night of drinking. The dreaded ex phone call or text in the middle of the night, etc. They need to come up with a cell phone app that if you are intoxicated the phone wont work unless its for a cab or 911.

As far as Liarton is concerned, I don't think he needs rehab just yet. He did something stupid and embarrassing. I get why you are ticked Joe. If he would have just picked up the phone and talked to you then I think you would have kept this to yourself. The fact he is calling for an investigation, is just stupid and wrong.

  8. Calling your opponent a drunk. And we are to believe you will bring civility to office? You were probably duped. I think you should admit it and say you are sorry for that vile post.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh puhleese, where was the outrage when Barrie Tilghman was in office? How many times did you vote for her? She was drunk or had been drinking most of her tenure. Drunk when she and her daughter attacked Rachel Polk. Ireton has every legal right to drink as does anyone else 21 or over. He also has the right to make a fool of himself and wake up with regret or lack of memory just like most of Salisbury does every Sunday morning. Get over your self righteous selves.

  10. anonymous 8:19, the call came in from the Mayor. I spoke directly with him and my Wife could hear him speak as well. Folks, think about it. What else do they have left other than to say I was duped. The photo images above do not lie. It happened, move on. For those of you sending me messages about a bon fire in Delmar, what, I'm not allowed to go visit my other properties? Am I under house arrest in Salisbury? Am I not allowed to go visit my Wife and Grandson. See you at the polls.

    ReplyDelete
  11. anonymous 8:27, aka Chuck Cook, OWN IT then. Don't deny it ever happened. Don't call for an investigation for phone records, which I'm fully willing to do, by the way. Apologize for asking me to meet the Mayor at the GOB Sunday at noon and not only not showing up but refusing to respond to ANY of my messages.

  12. Did anyone see him out drinking Saturday night?

Did he have his shirt on?

  13. You are mentioned in the Daily Rag again today.

"There's not a single politician, not a single blog that can argue this," Ireton said. "(They say) there's a parking problem downtown. No, there's not."

  14. Jim Ireton skated through the election on the coattails of Debbie Campbell and then ferociously attacked her. Jim Ireton you might think the voters will forget that, but guess what babe, your political career is TOAST!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. i wholeheartedly believe the mayor was out doing some drunk dialing. he used to drunk dial a friend of mine all the time but it wasn't to discuss politics. mr. albero should just be glad the mayor didn't try to convince him to meet at the mayor's office that night :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. 8:38 I heard he used to get blind drunk at Flavors, hit on guys and take his shirt off! Were you there?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes this is bad. I will concede that most people have done things they would not normally do while under the influence of alcohol. I would also agree that this mayor has been seen on many occasions patronizing local drinking establishments in an intoxicated condition, doing things like taking his shirt off in bars and then driving home afterward. This is not the behavior one should expect from an elected official. Jim should have answered the phone or returned your calls. You are right. He owns his actions and now he owns the fallout from them. Jim, you live in a fishbowl when you are elected to office. As far as alcohol being a truth serum? Sometimes it can be. I think that's the case here. He is frustrated that he cannot be the king. He's frustrated that the people who once supported him are growing tired of his childish antics. He's frustrated that the system of checks and balances built into our representative form of government is doing it's job and preventing him from having absolute rule and it has him wanting to quit. He will follow suit with the typical political response now that he is sober and he will deny everything. If he pursues this request for an explanation it will unfold almost identically to the Congressman Weiner sexting scandal that ultimately led to his resignation. Jim...man up and admit to this fiasco before it causes unnecessary embarrasment to your family, your party, and yourself. But it's whatever.

  24. Is this Mayor Iretons "Anthony Weiner" moment where he claims someone else must have gotten a hold of his cell phone and made the call? Just be glad he did not send pics of himself like the former congressman did. The good people of Salisbury deserve better than Mr. Ireton. Is he really that stupid?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Joe, you may not publish this due to your impending run, but I strongly feel that Mayor Ireton has two strong points: His ability to secure grants ( which you probably disagree with, but must concede is a neccesary evil), and his efforts to clean up the Wicimico. A healthy and vibrant river is essential for downtown growth/ revitalization. I hope that when you win, you'll continue his initiatives...Thanks, and see you in the G.O.B!

    ReplyDelete
  26. WBOC SHOULD be all over this.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Typical liberal democrat behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Securing grants when the government is broke is not wise in my opinion. I'd rather have leaders that can run an efficient operation while cutting expenses, not getting grants and spending money that we cannot afford 9:52 I hope Joe will cut waste, not spend like a liberal Dem. The "just get a grant mentality" has to change or the country is doomed.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, that is crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would assume that if Joe published this on his site that he does have the actual proof to back what he is saying or this could be a major mistake. He pretty much has the batt;e won already so why would he just make this up?

  33. To those of you sending in comments challenging the validity of the images shown above, I would be MORE than happy to show Chief Duncan the information from my cell phone. However, I will NOT publish Ireton's phone number as I do not want him harassed on that line.

As mentioned in the original Post, I stopped in the SPD and showed them ALL of the information from that call. Chief Duncan was not in or present.

There's no scam. Remember, I'm the one that was on the phone with him for more than 7 minutes and my Wife heard his voice as well. Ireton made the call but simply cannot seem to recall what he had done Saturday night.

I have known Jim for many years now. I can assure you I know his voice and even manorisms. You might dupe me for a second or two but not 7 minutes.

  39. If you want a full time, respectable mayor increase the salary and expectations to full time. A Salary of $100,000 per year would be comparable to other jurisdictions. To justify the salary eliminate John Pick and Lore Chambers positions and create a new City Adiministrator’s position at half the current salary. Problem solved.

    ReplyDelete
  40. In vino veritas.

  41. Well they call him Prince Charming, cant speak a word when hes full of ludes. Because he drinks alone. One Bourbon, one scoth and one beer. Jim drinks alone with nobody else. He has to fight for his right to party. What a ship of fools.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @11:59 AM

What would increasing the salary to 100K a year do? I think, to be fair, the Mayor should make what the MEDIAN income is of his jurisdiction. THAT would be fair, and give incentive to try/do everything in his/her power to raise that median income. There would be a direct incentive.

Everyone complains that their politicians are "out of touch" with the common man. It's simple... dictate that their only means of income is the median of the income of their constituents.

This would quickly route out the opportunists and career politians. I think this should apply to all political representatives.

    ReplyDelete

  47. Thank you Joe for checking up on him. He could have been in trouble. You are always doing good for others. You are a saint.

  48. I am far from any legal expert but, it seems to me that, when a public official calls a citizen at home late in the evening, that's harassment. It doesn't matter whether or not he was under the influence of anything. What does matter though is whether he made the call from a phone that the City funds or a personal phone. If the former, he was mis-using his official capacity in additional to the harassment. File a complaint and the SPD can't legally cover it up.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jimmy has burned all of the bridges that got him where he is today. He has no where to turn except the bottle, just like Tighlman. That call was surely a cry for help, I hope he gets himself straight.

  51. anonymous 12:47, I trly do not feel in any way, shape or form that Jim Ireton was harassing me at all. It was an honest call. Yes, he was intoxicated and I have no problem with that. Perhaps some of you didn't understand the whole police chief thing. We were worried about his well being. He said when he was getting off the phone he was going to bed so when he didn't show up at noon I was somewhat worried. When he didn't return calls or messages I became more worried. When we learned Jim was OK, then and only then was I ticked off. I could have been spending time with my Wife and Grandson. It was completely RUDE for him not to respond to any of my messages.

He could have easily called me back or returned my text message, as he has always done so in the past.

More importantly, I have no interest in making ANY claim Jim harassed me in any way. That simply did not happen. His call Saturday night was fair, honorable and done with good intentions. Sunday was a different story.

It would have to be voted on by the citizens. It didn't fly last time.

I have mixed feelings on it, but there needs to be a balance of power between the executive branch and the legislative branch. The current form of government can and will work with the right person in the executive branch. Unfortunately we were fooled again, this time by Jim Ireton.

It has rocked his world as he figures out that the very foundations of his political beliefs are anti-American, his mentor Obama a fraud.

  106. There's got to be more to the DT's turning on the mayor than them just being sick of his tantrums.
That so called "newpaper" is NOT to be trusted nor are those that work for it.
I'm wondering now why they felt so compelled to write the "editorial" on the Somerset sheriff? Why did they single him out? If I stand correct, both Sheriff Lewis and OC chief have had their fair share of lawsuits which ended up costing tax payers dearly so why weren't then included?
The only plausible explanation is that the DT's is so hard up they are willing to risk any intergity they have left. What they are "reporting" lately is far from news.

  107. Dear Mr. Albero:

I worked around politics five years as a spokesman for city hall and the police in Florida, which hopefully warrants a dash of credibility. In addition, I was a newspaper and television reporter. Tactically, I would have waited to make this episode so public. Get your ducks in a row, and proceed accordingly. A quick trigger is emblematic of the ugliness retarding contemporary American politics. It only confirms our worst suspicions about politicians and their ardent, self-righteous party affiliations. I am an independent with little respect for either party, but will likely vote for Obama because of the arrogant, self-puffing Bush-Cheney years. That cast of characters wore me out despite having limited relevance here. Your willingness to shake things up, as it were, is a strength; your penchant for personal attacks is a detriment. I believe you sincerely desire a better downtown Salisbury, which is terrific, but it can only advance with consensus rather than outright hostility. Your recent post indicating your concern with Ireton's alleged state of intoxication conflicts with the orginal. I think you capitalized on his condition for political gain, signifying a brave new world of instant gratification, pontification and allegations in cyberspace. Keep challenging conventions, but remember how much the public suffers from uncivil discourse. Too bad there is not a third party to even the playing field. Keep forging ahead within the same old constraints of the 2-party system in mind, tone down the rhetoric, and deliver.

  120. Jim should resign but I doubt that he will. A lot of elected officials should have resigned but their ego doesn't allow them to do it. Good examples are Sheriff Jones, Davis Ruark, Kristy Hickman, etc. Once elected they think they can do what ever they want with no consequences. They are wrong and we have seen what happens to them. It's only a matter of time before they are forced out or forced to resign or defeated in the next election. Either way, it's always good to get rid of them.

  121. Joe, I just read this post and I was floored. There is something you probably should know - Jim Ireton has a recording of this "conversation" and he was playing it for some demo-crack-head boy-toys earlier this evening. I overheard him and some of his cronies having a good laugh about it over some drinks.
I think that they think this was a sarcastic prank intended to get you riled up and make you show up to the GOB on Sunday. I heard some of it and it was pretty funny, but doesn't the mayor of the city have anything better to do with his time on the weekends than take jabs at you.

Is it possible to get control of this city?

Jim Ireton is an ass and excuse my language but it's true about two years ago my kids were playing with a ball at my aunts house with their cousins and the ball accidently rolled into his bushes when my kids went to get the ball he came outside yelling and cursing at them. At this point my husband confronted him and said it was an accident there is no reason to yell at the kids. After that the cops showed up and said that Ireton said he felt threatened but the cops actually laughed they even stated how much of a prick he is, I have absolutely no respect for him.

  150. anonymous 8:34, Dunn bought a house a long time ago in the City. Come on now, do you really think Mike Dunn would ever atempt to run for Mayor. IF he ever thoughtabout it in the past, he/they never saw Joe Albero coming. I said it in my radio interview, I'd welcome that like there's no tomorrow.

I want you people to think about something for a minute. First, look at how the votes, (in numbers) went in the last two elections. Once Tilghman, Dunn and Cathcart saw how things were going they bowed out. Now, in name recognition alone I'd at least hold similar numbers to Debbie Campbell's ;ast election. That being said, now figure in ALL of the other 10,000 voters that didn't actually get out and vote for a Mayor because all they had was Comegys and Ireton. Through Salisbury News I'll be able to reach a very strong portion of those people who didn't vte and my numbers will skyrocket over a Dunn or Ireton. Also, I've stated my intent a year before the election. He doesn't have a chance, nor does anyone from SAPOA. Bring it on.

  161. anonymous 9:16, unlike the Mayor, I was not drunk nor do I feel I ever made any statement I wouldn't be afraid of going public. You see how I speak on PAC 14. That conversation on my behalf was no different. I respected what the Mayor was saying, I felt for his position as I know in his heart what he wanted to do for Salisbury but I truly believe he got pulled in by the old administration and could never return from the dark side.

They will NEVER have me in such a position and again that scares them to death. Don't you think for a second we don't fear for unexpected possibilities, if you know what I mean. Nevertheless, I cannot allow that to run my life.

While IF the Mayor recorded our conversation I welcome him to go public with it and he has my full permission. However, IF he does so without the full version of it I would sue his ass off. I think it would be great for ALL of the people who voted for him to hear just what he was telling me Saturday night.

  168. anonymous 9:24, no, he has not called. I'm sure at this point he's so fuming mad at himself for what he did that he cannot face me, even in a phone call or text message. I'll add, I have NOT heard a word from the Police Chief either. What does that tell you. There is NO investigation and her Staff personally saw the incoming phone call from Ireton.

I'll repeat, (to those nay sayers) I refuse to publish a picture with the Mayor's cell phone number on it. I do not have to answer to you people bitching about my doing so. The authorities have seen it and are 100% convinced the call came directly from the Mayor's cell phone.

    Dear Mr.

    June 4, 2012 7:04 PM

"I am an independent with little respect for either party, but will likely vote for Obama because of the arrogant, self-puffing Bush-Cheney years."
