American Drivers Turn To Smaller, Better Engines

Back when gas was cheap, Americans bought cars with V-8 engines like the Big Block, Cobra Jet and Ramcharger. Acceleration was all that mattered, even in family cars that never made it to full throttle.

The 427-cubic inch Chevrolet Tri-Power was the siren song of the gearhead, sending Corvettes roaring down the highway at up to 140 mph.

But now, thanks to government regulation and gas-price gyrations, the motors that move the nation's cars and trucks are shrinking.

  1. Yeah...look at the average age of the vehicles on the road. It's the highest it's ever been. I'll keep my gas guzzler. It may only be my weekend toy, but I'd rather be in that than an actual toy(Prius, Smart, Leaf, etc etc).

  2. We are being "fed' our engines. There are engines out there getting 78 mpg. If we had a real choice, would you "choose" the 20 mpg 6 cylinder or the 30 mpg 4 cyl?

    Didn't think so...

    Another idiot immature 'driver'.

Grow up or ask someone to show you how if you don't know.

    You don't impress anyone.

Well, maybe some other immature pre-teenagers.

    Go get em redneck.

  6. 10:35, ahhh one of obama's lefty tree huggers! you're the reason why we are losing jobs over spotted owls, and those little darter fish. I'm sure while you profess to want to save the planet you are burning every light in your 4,000 square foot home, and watering your lawn while letting all the fertilizer run off into the bay! like I said squashing a cockroach like you would be a pleasure!
