Google plans to warn more than half a million users of a computer
infection that may knock their computers off the Internet this summer.
Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international
hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected
computers around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up
a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet
disruptions for those infected users. But that system will be shut down
July 9 -- killing connections for those people.
The FBI has run an impressive campaign for months, encouraging people to visit a website that will inform
them whether they're infected and explain how to fix the problem. After
July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the Internet.
One sure-fire way to get them to run their antivirus, although updating'll be a problem.
ReplyDeleteThe goal is for the FBI to force you to install their program to get rid of the virus. If you don't they won't let you get back onto the net stating that they fear you will perpetuate the virus. If you do install their software....you will be able to get on to the internet but you will never have any privacy at all. Ever. Pick your poison.
ReplyDeleteThank you, 5:30 pm. You are completely correct. My advice is to have an extra BIOS chip and clone your hard drive, and have a spare. DIY, don't let Big Brother do it for you, 'cause you never know what you're gonna get!
ReplyDeleteThe revolution will not be televised, nor will it be on the internet!
DOH!
ReplyDelete5:30 and 6:09: stop being so... delusional. Govern'ment conspiracy? Did the shooter on the grassy knoll do this?
ReplyDeleteTons of information, outside of .gov, on how to tell if your infected... and how to clean it up.
