Citizens Oppose Breaking Talbot County's Property Tax Cap; Second Hearing Tonight

Citizens packed in the Bradley Meeting room and flowed out into the hall today for the first of two public hearings on Talbot County's proposed Fiscal Year 2013 budget.

The budget proposes to break the county's property tax cap to pay for state-mandated education funding. Talbot citizens five times voted for that cap, and several spoke out against breaking it.

  1. That is exactly what we need a little more around here in Wicomico - citizens with some backbone to stand up for the average Joe Blow taxpayer.

I have a great notion to ride up there myself and give support to those citizens. Where is that meeting suppose to be held in Easton.

  2. I knew overriding the revenue cap was going to lead to an all out revolt. You watch and see if something else doesn't come out of this grass roots effort. People are sick and tired of being trampled on. When your government doesn't allow the people to petition for a redress of grievance - the people have a right to revolt. And a revolt is exactly what is happening.

  3. This type of event could spark a brush fire. If Wicomico officals are smart they'll take heed to what is transpiring up in Talbot.
The people themselves decided to overwhelmingly support the ballot initiative. To now all of a sudden decide to repeal it almost invites a revolution.

  4. You can not blame them for being mad. I'm mad to.

  5. I assume that the state is holding their education funding hostage in Talbot, same as here?

But nothing is being done to curb the appetite of the Bored of Ed to reduce their budget in line with available revenues?

  6. Now you can see why the Wisconsin legislature attempted to ban collective bargaining. If the people around here are smart, they'll form a taxpayers union to help fight for the majority of our population as opposed to special interest.

  7. they can raise the dump fee, tag fee, but do not mess with the revenue cap. It is holy grale as they will soon find out.

  10. What is up with 8:00 PM

If 8:00 PM can't take the heat - then get out of the kitchen.

Last time I checked most people who own property in and around Salisbury/Wicomico want the revenue cap. Since you are one of the minority, you are more than welcome to send to Wicomico a little extra of your cash.

That's been a hugh problem with all the counties and towns. They got a little bit of extra money from the building boom and they spent it putting more heads on the govenment payrolls. So many departements are heavy with deputy this and that's, then you got assistant deputy this and that's then assistant this and that's. Then you got LE agencies and FD's with a ton of "chiefs" and not enough "indians." This was all done to keep the elected officials friends on the gov't payrolls happy with complete disregard to the voters and tax payers.
