Romney: Poor Mothers Should Be Required To Work Outside The Home Or Lose Welfare

In case it wasn't already clear that last week's controversy over stay at home moms was entirely manufactured, this should put the question to bed.

Romney and allies cried that Democrats had declared "war on moms" after a Democratic strategist said Romney's wife hadn't worked a day in her life. Romney's camp said this meant Democrats don't value stay at home moms and motherhood, while they believe that women who stay home are doing real work.

But for every Romney action, there is an equal and opposite Romney reaction, and this morning, MSNBC's Chris Hayes dug up a video of Romney from just January in which the Republican presidential candidate said he wanted to require women who receive welfare to work outside the home, even if their children are very young. He told a New Hampshire audience:

"I wanted to increase the work requirement," said Romney. "I said, for instance, that even if you have a child 2 years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, 'Well that's heartless.' And I said, 'No, no, I'm willing to spend more giving day care to allow those parents to go back to work. It'll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work."

  1. They absolutely should be doing some kind of work. Have a few others that are on welfare watch their kids for a couple of hours a day while they work and then switch. There should be no free hand outs. If you want to eat you work. Watch how quick people will find a job when they actually want to eat. Right now there is no incentive to work. Everything is given to them for free. Well I'm sick of paying taxes so you can sit home and get everything for free.

  2. Im not denying that people do work the system when it comes to welfare and unemployment. But that whole "get a job" speech isn't that simple. People don't want to accept that there are LESS JOBS THAN UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE! Sorry to have to capitalize that, but it needed emphasis. There are not enough jobs available for those "lazy SOBs" to just get a job.

  4. Well, so let's assume a mother can go out there and get a full time job and put her kid(s) in day care. $7.50 an hour forty hours is $300.00 minus tax. Come home on Friday and pay the daycare, what, $160 per child plus diapers. Well, NOW those bloggers can call this one a bad mother for ruining the finances of the house, ignoring her children's needs by having someone else raise them, and costing the taxpayers assistance money along the way!

    WINNER!

Stay home and raise your own kids to a higher standard, and see what happens then! (Read comments above)

Bottom line? Romney is a politician and can and does speak out of both sides of his mouth for his own personal & political gain. He will talk to who is in the room without regard as to who cannot hear his words.

Vote for someone not like that this time around. Vote Ron Paul 2012.
