$620,000 Awarded To Owners Of Shot Dog

A Frederick County Circuit Court jury awarded $620,000 to the Taneytown couple that filed a civil case against the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.

The Frederick News-Post reports Deputy First Class Timothy Brooks violated the Jenkins' rights under the Maryland constitution when he entered their home without permission and shot their chocolate Labrador retriever.

The Jenkins say Brooks and Deputy First Class Nathan Rector came into their home without a warrant or their permission. The officers were looking for the couple's son to serve him a civil warrant.

  1. GOOD!!!!

You see folks, this is the exact reason why you need to KNOW YOUR RIGHTS and to STAND UP for your rights...

Half of the cops on the force don't even know the laws in which they are suppose to protect...

With all the laws being made and passed, how could they to say the least...

ALWAYS KNOW that cops WILL ALWAYS use the I FELT THREATENED crap and 90% will fly and they get away with it...

  2. This story could have easily read:
Two officers shot dead after invading a home without warrant.
The startled homeowner shot them dead fearing they were attempting to rob him.

  3. Just make sure they cannot say how threatened they felt.
Deceased persons can not tell LIES.
This is in Frederick, where finger pointing is life "threatening".
Try to enter armed and shoot my dog.
    Is it worth your life?
    Taxpayers pay this tab.

  4. Quick, someone help the Van Ess' with a civil suit. Different situation, but maybe a jury will sympathize with the blatant wrong...

  5. anonymous 2:58, taxpayers SHOULD pay the price. This is exactly how you make your elected officials accountable.

There's a price to pay when you hire a loose cannon and this is what background checks are all about. Municipalities are insured, for what it's worth. I believe Salisbury has LEGIT, (or something like that).

No different than fines from the MDE for the Waste Water Treatment Plant illegal activity.

Somewhere along the way someone needs to pay for this stupidity.

Tomorrow I have a video going up that will blow your mind with a cop going absolutely CRAZY on innocent people and the video completely proves it. I sat in court at least twice with Sheriff's Deputies, one who sexually abused children and went to jail for some 30 years and another who allegedly got drunk, slammed into someone's vehicle, left the scene and went home and a family member turned him in. I know many of you know additional stories of such. Police Officers need to be held accountable and if their ELECTED leaders can't keep them in check, VOTE THEM OUT.

    It really is that simple.

  6. I think the deputy that shot the dog should be made to pay this settlement out of his own pocket. I wouldn't care if he has to sell everything he owns and live in a cardboard box. Why should the taxpayers have to put up the money because this guy's an idiot.

  7. anonymous 3:11, are you absolutely clueless? As if it isn't difficult enough to FIND someone to become a cop these days, do you actually believe they'd do so if they had to risk their own funds to serve and protect.

This is a very sue happy country. Perhaps the better idea, (almost as wild as yours) should be that we simply have the right to carry and protect ourselves instead.

  8. If you leave your dog unattended in your vehicle for 10 minutes at the mall you will receive a more substantial sentence than this cop will.
Unless of course you ARE a k9 officer and you forget to take your dog out of the car all weekend. Then you get the police chief asking for privacy for the family to mourn their loss.
    The double standard is sickening.

  9. Thanks, Joe. I just got my first 9mm handgun and had a BLAST Saturday practicing self defense! Now I'm ordering 3,000 rounds of hollowpoints!

Compared to one million for a hot cup of coffee...no, I don't think it's too much.

And if they won a thousand dollars, it wouldn't give them any reason not to do it again.

  12. When the CITIZENS start shooting back because they also feel "threatened" will be an historical day. Shooting something while serving a CIVIL warrant? The homeowners should have shot BOTH of those cops and claimed they were threatened by two goofs who drew their weapons while looking for a CIVIL violator. Why do you think many people HAVE dogs in their house? For PROTECTION and alerts to intruders. The cops were strangers and intruders, but because they think they can do whatever they want without consequence, they shot the dog like it was just another thing to do. I'm suprised the homeowner didn't blow them both away.
