Where Does All That Money Go In Maryland

Remember when they said the largest portion of the Lottery/Keno money would be going towards education. Then slots came along and we heard the same thing. Well, how is it then that HB 1412 has forced the hands of so many Counties in Maryland?

Obviously the millions upon millions of dollars they raise each and every week is going somewhere other than the Board of Education, right?

Yet the largest taxes each County pays goes towards the Board of Education. Mind you, I'm talking about each and every household, not just the ones who have children attending schools.

In my honest opinion, things are so out of control one has to wonder if there are any checks and balances at all when it comes to Board of Education funding.

  1. A good public school system is a benefit to everyone, not just those who have children. If we don't fund schools then we'll surely have to fund prisons.

  2. Anon 8:52 your statement is true as far as it goes. The problem is that the State of Maryland justifies these taxes and fees by saying they go to fund schools when the money actually goes elsewhere.

  3. It seems the money that is set aside for education is going to high paychecks not actually to education. Teachers complaining they have had no raise etc. They should be happy they have a job! As it goes right now when the so called leaders get done the people who have jobs just as well be on welfare cause they are not bringing home the money they earn. I agree that children need a good education but when does it stop as far as what I work for? I work my butt off to make an honest living but have to keep asking my self what for because it seems the more I work the more is taken away.

  5. Why are there no LAWS to protect us from the thieves at the top? They constantly rob appropriated budgets and no one knows where the money went!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  6. This is exactly what I've been telling you people for a LONG time!
They're collecting money in Maryland for "certain purposes", but down the road, the money's not there so they have to institute a new tax for fee for this SAME "certain purpose".
    Are you awake now, finally?

  7. This state uses a lot of tax money buying land for so called preservation when it campaign donors payback. They spent 72 million last year buying marshland you could'nt build on anyway.

  8. Why is it necessary for the Federal government to collect the funds, then administratively skim off 30% or more and then dole the remainder out as it sees fit? Bring the taxes back to the local level and cut the Feds back to the necessities as called for in the Constitution. Local politicians are more readily held accountable and therefore have to be more responsible. How often do you have the opportunity to see your City or County representative as compared to your elite Congressman?

  9. A perfect example of this is when they instituted the flush tax to go only towards the Bay Restoration Fund.....then last year they transferred 290 million from the BRF to the general fund. That is why they now want to increase the flush tax. Its a total shell game....and disgusting.

  10. As an member of the Armed Forces, on Active Duty, I pay the Glorious State of Maryland more in taxes than I do to the Federal Government, even though I have spent a total of 200 days in the State in the last 8 years. This has driven me to decide not to return to Maryland as a resident, when I depart the Military in the future. I have not changed my State of Residence yet, since it is illegal to do simply based on tax purposes, but as soon as I determine where it is I will be going, I will be changing it. Just as California has debated splitting into two states, I feel Maryland should as well. Lets see how long the democrats on the western shore make it without the blood, sweat, and tears (and Tax dollars) of the hard working Eastern Shore.

  12. 11:24 we'll see how far the 150,000 people on the eastern shore's tax dollars stack up against the multiple million on the west side of the bay. No disrespect to you and certainly not to your service of this country but the shore could never sustain on its own.

  14. You have to remember that these are tough decisions that are being made in the name of education and job creation. The problem is the decision makers are liars and thieves.
