Unemployed Taxpayers Face New Penalty Relief Provisions

As the April 17 tax deadline approaches, the Internal Revenue Service is offering relief for millions of unemployed Americans.

New penalty relief provisions allow a six-month grace period on failure-to-pay penalties.

Taxpayers who qualify can waive their payments until Oct. 15 of this year.

Those who have been unemployed for at least 30 consecutive days and self-employed individuals with at least a 25 percent drop in income qualify for the six-month extension.

In addition, the IRS is making payment installment options available to more people.
