STOP THE spread OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

(Salisbury, MD) - Washing hands with soap and water is the most effective method of preventing the spread of germs, including Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. If soap and water are not available, using an alcohol based hand sanitizer and rubbing hands and fingers until they are dry is effective in quickly reducing the number of germs on hands, as long as hands are not visibly dirty. “We should make it a habit to wash our hands frequently throughout the day - not just before meals,” said Lori Brewster, Health Officer for Wicomico County. The proper hand washing technique is to wet hands under clean, running water and rub soap between hands, scrubbing the backs of hands, between fingers and under nails for at least twenty seconds, and rinsing hands under clean, running water and towel or air drying hands. The Centers for Disease Control recommends washing hands:

Before, during, and after preparing food;
Before eating food;
Before and after caring for someone who is sick;
Before and after treating a cut or wound;
After using the toilet;
After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet;
After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing;
After touching an animal or animal waste; and
After touching garbage

In addition to being conscientious with hand washing, taking general safety precautions such as using gloves when caring for someone with an open wound, sanitizing surfaces that may have come in contact with body fluids or secretions with a bleach and water solution, and staying home from school, daycare or work if signs of illness are present are important in reducing the spread of infectious diseases.

“Washing our hands and taking general safety precautions doesn’t take much time or effort, but both offer great rewards in preventing illness,” said Mrs. Brewster. 1. Looks like nobody here spent any time cooking in a resturant. Your little list, is daily happening and not to the good. Who has time for that? Close your eyes and enjoy your meals.

  2. What do we pay Mrs. Brewster to tell us to wash our hands, just like our mothers did?

  6. Some folks are too nasty to do something as simply as washimg their hands. Just go into a restaurant. Some will eat their meal, blow their nose right ther at the dinner table and go right to eating their dessert. Not once do they think about washing their hands, Some folks are down right nasty.
