Md. Senate Approves Budget, Including Income Tax

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Maryland Senate passed budget legislation on Thursday that includes an income tax increase for most taxpayers, leading a Republican lawmaker to say during a contentious debate that "Karl Marx would be proud" of higher taxes on the wealthy while a Democratic lawmaker described the comments as offensive.

The Democrat-controlled Senate voted 26-20 for the income tax increase. All the yay votes came from Democrats while eight from that party and 12 Republicans voted against it.

The income tax bill was changed Wednesday night to collect more money from couples with taxable income of more than $500,000. A top bracket of 5.75 percent will apply to all of their taxable income after deductions. The change would raise an estimated $30 million on top of the initial proposal, which didn't apply the increase from the first dollar. It would cost people in that bracket roughly $2,500 more a year.

  1. Just voting the money hungry bastards outta office doesn't seem like punishment enough! The feeling of helplessness is overwhelming. This has to be the third worst state in the union...only CA & NY could be worse.

  2. It just means that more people in the higher income bracket will leave the State. Which will lead to fewer taxes being collected.
The answer is to lower taxes which will give the residents more money to spend and also attract more business to our State.
VOTE THEM ALL OUT, WITHOUT A RETIREMENT PACKAGE

  5. Duh...same reason Obama was always absent from the voting as a Senator....can claim he didn't vote for it! He's no better than the rest of the bum Democrats!

  6. No 9:30 Mathias was in the hospital. He had an infection which caused sepsis. He gets a pass on this one.
I'm not a big fan of his politics, and know the game played in Annapolis and on Capital Hill but this is a legit absence.

  7. Mr Pinsky is wrong on all counts: Karl Marx would in fact me proud of our legislature wanting to sock it to those who have achieved sufficient success to be called "rich" by his standards; it is inappropriate to set out to enact laws that force MD's unemployment rate higher by driving jobs to states that punish business people's success less; & he and those voting in favor are wrong in frivolously continue to waste taxpayer money and demanding the unwilling taxpayers pay for their waste.
