Early Bloom vs. Metro Work to Cause Cherry Blossom Headaches

WASHINGTON -- Metro riders can usually expect a break from track work during the cherry blossom's peak, but following this year's early bloom, don't expect the transit agency to adjust its plans.

"Unfortunately, because a lot of this track work is planned so far in advance, it involves contractors and supplies and materials. It is really difficult to pull back once you have committed to it," Metro Chief Spokesperson Dan Stessel tells WTOP.

There are already some pops of pink around the Tidal Basin, but the National Park Service says the true blooming period will start this weekend on March 18. Peak bloom is expected between March 20 and 23.
