CHILD DEAD AND MOTHER INJURED IN WICOMICO CO. SHOOTING

(HEBRON, MD) – Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate a Wicomico County shooting that left a child dead and his mother injured last night.

The deceased is identified as Jamal A. Woolford Jr., 4, of the 100-block of Old Railroad Road, Hebron, Md. He was pronounced dead last night at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center. An autopsy is expected to be performed today.

The injured victim is identified as Shanice A. Kellam, 24, who is Jamal’s mother and lives at the same address. She is being treated at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. At this time her wounds are not believed to be life threatening.

Just before 9:30 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police at the Salisbury Barrack received a 911 call from the victim’s address reporting a shooting. Troopers, county deputies, and EMS personnel responded to the scene. They found Jamal Woolford Jr., who had sustained what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest and his mother, who had what appeared to be gunshot wounds to her hand, arm and shoulder.

The father of the deceased victim was also in the home, as was a seven-year-old daughter of Shanice Kellam. Neither of them was injured.

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators responded to the scene and are conducting the investigation. They are being assisted by investigators from the Wicomico Bureau of Investigation, troopers from the Salisbury Barrack, State Police crime scene technicians, and officers from the Salisbury Police Department.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Shanice Kellam was asleep in her bedroom when she was awakened by something hitting her. She awoke to see her son wounded in the chest and then realized she was also bleeding. She ran with her son into the living room to her son’s father who had just returned home and 911 was called.

Investigators have learned Jamal Woolford Jr.’s father owned a handgun that was kept in the bedroom. Police have also been told the child had previously been seen playing with the handgun.

Investigators have obtained a search warrant for the scene and technicians continue to process the home for evidence. A large caliber handgun has been recovered on the bed where the shooting is believed to have occurred.

The investigation is continuing.

  2. 'the child had previously been seen playing with the handgun'.....

Assign the blame where it belongs. A 4 year old child has no concept of danger or responsibility.

I am so glad I don't have to live with that.

  3. This is so sad, why in the world would that gun be accessable and loaded with a four year old (who was obviously curious about it)in the home. It is adults like these two, who will get everyone's firearm taken away. They make programable safes that can be opened in a few seconds for around $200.

  4. This is tragic. But this story doesn't add up.large caliber weapon and this child woke up mom.mom didn't wake up on her own? And that's after she was shot as well? This poor child.I completely agree. The parents are responsible one way or the other.if your child plays with a gun at four years old you take necessary steps to ensure they never can touch it again.
I think there is more to this story however.

  5. "Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators responded to the scene and are conducting the investigation."

There's only ONE reason they would be there. Read between the lines.

  6. Oh yeah. There is much more to this than meets the eye. Why is MSP homicide un it there when we have a multi-jurisdictional WBI who has investigated crimes such as this satisfactorily before? Why is Salisbury City PD in Hebron? Yes sir! This puddle is deeper than it looks.

  7. I pray for the child now in God's hands. I don't know what to think about this story. I agree with the 8:23 commenter. Sad, Sad, Sad.

  8. Everyone on this blog boasts about arming themselves. There are consequences to an armed society.

WRONG. These are the consequences of irresponsible parents. If a child burns himself with boiling water from pot on a stove, is it a consequence of a society that uses stove-top burners? If a child cuts his hand off with circular saw, is it a consequence of a society that uses power tools? Place responsibility were it needs to be placed.

  11. This smells bad. Is this the same house where someone was shot about 3 years ago too? I know it was around this time too because westside intermediate went on lockdown during msa testing. Bad area of houses around there.

  13. I know the family. And the father is a drug dealer. The mother is actually the fathers sister. They have the same dad. Its a very twisted family that have always let there children run around and play with no watchful eye. He was an adorable little boy though with a smile that would light up the world. Bu the time they get done investigating the father and mother will most likely be in jail. Not to mention both parents currently have felonies.

  15. Can a 4 year old shoot this type of weapon? (hand size/ strength/ coordination???). Sounds rather strange. I don't normally point fingers but this story seems to have more to it than is being told. I feel for the children involved, both the deceased and the one that wasn't involved.

  16. If guns kill people, then pencils misspell words!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, the 4 yr old child more than likely could not squeeze off one round let alone 4. Its a cover up that cannot cover up the truth. Give me a break on gun laws. People are so quick to say gun laws are not strict enough blah blah blah. Its not the laws or the guns that kill, ITS PEOPLE. Knives can kill, ropes can kill (ie. strangle), intentionally set fires can kill, hell you can drown someone in water. Should there be laws against all of these as well???? Go find another tree to hug!!!!!

  19. 11:52, you dont know what you are talking about! They don't have the same Dad. They were step-siblings. I know it's weird but sometimes when people marry and they have older children, things like this DO happen! LOL
