STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY ON BLACK HISTORY MONTH

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 2, 2012) – Governor Martin O’Malley today issued the following statement on Black History Month:

“This month, we honor and celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans to our nation.

“Frederick Douglass once said, ‘We are one, our cause is one, and we must help each other if we are to succeed.’ Black History- a rich, proud and ongoing history- is all of our history. It is part of the common thread of human dignity that unites us. And so it is not just this month, but every month, that we should come together to reflect on our African American ancestors, and the generations before of hardworking Marylanders who sacrificed to create a better State for generations to come.

“Thanks to so many great leaders who came before us, courageous men and women of character and wisdom, we are able to enjoy a better quality of life. And as we look back on their accomplishments, we should have the strength to choose a better future for our children.”

  1. How dare this man tarnish the good name of Fredrick Douglass. He has done nothing but keep blacks impoverished in this state to bolster his agenda

  2. Thanks O’Malley, for recognizing our "Black Americans" for this month, while you pass Maryland’s sovereignty to the U.N., pass unwanted bills, and raise our taxes. Meanwhile spending us deeper into the Federal Reserve’s back breaking debt. It’s funny how gay rights come up as your most important mission "for the children" at the same time you implemented the gas tax. The only question I have is how much is this month going to cost me?

  4. Racism at the core and they still (or don't want to) get it! See what happens when he starts preaching white history month or speaking about white entertainment TV...they speak about these racisms but won't acknowledge they are just as racist as the next person.

  6. Hey when do we get to celebrate White History Month. Oh that might sound racist. Wow talk about double standards. I have been discriminated against my whole life because I am a White male. Yes that's right. Every time I tried to get a job they said we have to hire minorities first. For about ten years the Maryland State Police hired nothing but minorities
to create a racial balance. They even had to lower their standards to get the minorities to pass the tests. Not even taking into consideration that a State Trooper has to speak to the public everyday. At a traffic stop it is important that you be able to understand what the officer is saying. Some minorities are hard to understand. So I am 60 years old and have been discriminated against for being a white man. Affirmative action and all of that you know. Go figure.
