Plans for Welfare Drug Tests Gain Momentum

Conservatives who say welfare recipients should have to pass a drug test to receive government assistance have momentum on their side.

The issue has come up in the Republican presidential campaign, with front-runner Mitt Romney saying it's an "excellent idea."

Nearly two dozen states are considering plans this session that would make drug testing mandatory for welfare recipients, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. And Wyoming lawmakers advanced such a proposal this week.

  1. Any time any able bodied person seeks and accepts welfare there should be several requirments that person must fulfill.

They should have to show they are not buying/selling and or using any illegial substance.

There also should be a requirment that each able bodied must perform some degree of work to receive tax payer support.

For example neighborhood clean up or cleaning the roadways of litter are but a few examples. If a person accepting welfare is not willing to work for it than they should not be on the "dole".

Pride of working for what you receive should cause a person to think more of themselves. As well as show they are employable and willing to work to get off of welfare.

Change "welfare" to "federal tax dollars of any kind" then I agree. Treat everyone the same. Are we compeltely sure that no one that receives a government paycheck takes drugs? (politicians, staffers of politicians, the janotirial staff of government offices, military, government contractors) If you want our money, then you and everyone on your staff needs to be tested regularly.

It is foolish to believe that the people who collect government assistance are the ONLY people who may be using the money for means other than what it is appropriated for.
