Pennsylvania Officials Roll Out Drug Tests For Welfare Recipients

Pennsylvania officials are wading into the controversial territory of drug-testing welfare recipients, testing out a new program Republicans say is meant to prevent beneficiaries from getting a "free ride."
After a federal judge blocked a much broader drug-test rule in Florida, Pennsylvania is taking a more careful approach. Instead of mandating drug tests for all welfare recipients, Pennsylvania plans to randomly test only those with a felony drug conviction within the past five years and those on probation for such offenses.

  1. Why not everyone on welfare. I have to drug test when I apply for a job and at random also. Oh I forgot they don't have jobs....and I do not even or have never done drugs in my life.

  2. Taxpayers need this law badly.

  3. They should all be tested nationwide. If you expect the taxpayers to feed you and your children, then your right to privacy should be null and void (at least in this matter). If you don't want to be tested, then GET A JOB.

Oh because that would violate their rights, the stupid rights this country gives people.

Become a criminal and cheat, you will have a lot more rights

  7. I still think they need to test politicians. You might be surprised at what they would find. I understand the need for drug testing but guess what when they don't have $$$ or food stamps you will be footing the bill for all the kids that end up in foster care because they have no place to live or food to eat. Oh that's right I'm on the eastern shore just let the kids starve in the streets is what most of you would say.

  8. They need to test the Cadillac/Mercedes/Lincoln driving boyfriends too.

I was shopping the other day - a woman with three kids in tow paid for three grocery carts full of stuff with a handful of food stamp vouchers - I saw them a few minutes later loading all that stuff in the boyfriends Escalade with the 22" rims.

    How do we stop this?!

  9. Just because you are on welfare doesn't mean you don't have a job or are taking advantage of the system. It's sad how some of you judge others. Granted , there are the welfare recipients who do take advantage of the system . I happen to work two jobs and rely on WIC and foodstamps to feed my little girl . I hope to one day be able to stand on my own two feet but until then , I'm grateful for the help I do receive . I agree with the random drug testing . Only because welfare seems to be nothing but a crutch and enabler for drug users . They are being paid to get high . And that defeats the whole purpose of government assistance .

  10. All government employees are paid with my tax dollars. I want them tested as well if they are going to live off my tax money.
