On the heels of a new military survey that the number of reported violent sex crimes jumped 30 percent in 2011, with active-duty female soldiers ages 18 to 21 accounting for more than half of the of the victims, we speak with Trina McDonald and Kori Cioca, two subjects of "The Invisible War,” a new documentary that examines the epidemic of rape of soldiers within the U.S. military, which won the Audience Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. "Not only was I astounded by the numbers, but when I started talking to the women and men who had experienced this, I was just so devastated by their stories," says the film’s Academy Award-nominated director, Kirby Dick. "These are women and men who are very idealistic. They joined the military because they wanted to serve their country. They were incredible soldiers. And then, when they were assaulted, they had the courage to come forward, even though many people advised them not to," Dick says.

ReplyDeleteAre you truly that ignorant, or are you just plain stupid? Gay's have ALWAYS been in the military. Your comment just shows the true Eastern Shore "Good Ole Boy" mentality and many, and I'll say it again MANY people in the people in the military who are gay have Died in war as true hero's, something your ass didn't do.
They weren't playing in fox holes, they died doing just what their orders required them to do. I would stick my neck on a line and say you 9:48 would be one of the men who would be a perpetrator in raping these women and your just brushing it off on the gay's. I'll go as far as putting my name on this in hopes you visit me, as my Marine husband will tear you a new one!!
Of course, I've heard the other side of it from Commanders and Admirals. Orgies on board, gangbangs, etc. These accusations weren't from some low-level nobodies, but up to and including Chiefs' of Staff. Needless to say, that movie would probably sell a helluvalot better to boot!
ReplyDelete535-Totally agree. Gays have served since standing armies were first conceived, anyone who thinks otherwise is simply ignorant on the subject. I've known openly gay men that have entered the military, I've heard plenty of stories from guys with 20+ years in uniform. They have as much right as anyone to wear the uniform, and I honor their valor and sacrifice, like everyone should!
